ktvu's john sasaki is live where students are marching tonight in support of sasha fleischman. john? >> reporter: this is where all the marchers, couple hundred of them came here from oakland high school. the suspect in the case is a student at oakland high. this started there at 5:30 p.m. and we can show you from news chopper 2 video that was scene as people gathered. getting ready to send the message to the world. you can see the group is in the process of moving. this incident happened november 5 when sasha fleischman was burned on a bus and another individual has been arrested since then. sasha fleischman remains in the hospital at this moment and all these people here are getting a message across as no hate. they have been spreading the message, tying rainbows on the poles along the bus route of the 57 bus in which he was at the time and we talked to his father. >> he is doing great. yes. friends and strangers alike. >> reporter: long run ahead? >> i am -- without a doubt, yet. >> when this terrible thing happened to him i realized i didn't want to look at the bus stop if

ktvu's john sasaki is in oakland tonight and the roads are packed out there. >> reporter: take a look around. this is the heart of the commute for people heading eastbound. just up the hill from here is the caldecott tunnel and you can see all the traffic coming together from different directions. on this right side, those are cars comeing from northbound highway 13. now late this afternoon, the commute seemed to become a bit more challenging as the rain started to fall. no downpour, but enough to make the roads more dangerous than normal. it is hard to say how much rush hour was effected by weather but drivers we met at the flying a gas station who were commuting homing or heading somewhere else were well aware of how to handle themselves. >> it has been a little slick on the road today. i have to say, but it is okay. i'm a native so i'm used to the weather. >> a little slower. the roads are a little slicker. >> doesn't make it any betterment i'm listening to the radio and it is one crash after another. >> how was it getting here? >> slow, nervous. ktvu's john sasaki is live to show us how he is recovering. >> reporter: i have been covering the story since the incident happened and talked to his parents and today after he returned home from the hospital we hurt from the teenager. >> reporter: sasha fleischman hasn't been home since november 4, the day his life changed. >> i looked down and my skirt is on fire. and -- i freak out because i am on fire. >> reporter: as you can tell he has a sense of humor about the incident. he was on a a.c. transit bus when someone set his skirt on fire. he attempted to put out the flames but that made it worse. >> my second reaction, i went back to my kindergarten class, top, drop and roll. i start rolling around and other passengers started tomming on the flame -- stomping on the flames. >> reporter: he spent the last 24 days in the burn unit at the san francisco hospital. the boy who set him on fire, he remains in jail. >> you could know better than to light someone's clothes on fire. i think you should be able to realize that is not just a funny prank. >> reporter: she facing felony -- he is fac

ktvu's john sasaki spoke with the mother. >> reporter: today was the first court appearance for the suspect and his family's admitting he committed the crime basically. 16-year-old richard thomas a is facing felony charges of aggravated mayhem and great bodily injury for allegedly setting fire to another teenager on a bus. both charges carry hate crime enhancements. >> he didn't know it was going to be that bad. he's a very good kid. he was with his friends joking around. >> reporter: today outside the oakland courtroom where his arraignment was continued, his family defended him. his mother who identified herself as ms. jackson and spoke off camera told me that she's very sorry for my son's actions. did i not raise my son that way. as for the hate crime allegations jackson said no way. we have transgender first cousins in the family. >> thomas's arresting officer wrote thomas stated that he did it because he's homophobic. the victim in this case identifies as neither male nor female. . >> there's certainly a lot of out pouring of support for sasha. >> she's a senior where crowley is the sc
