nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker has more on that end of the story. good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening. today's announcement is particularly problematic because it comes just a few days before the deadline by which the administration said the website would be working well for most americans. now on the eve of thanksgiving, a new problem. as official washington prepares to start a long holiday weekend against a stormy backdrop, the white house chose to release more bad news about health care.gov. the administration announced small businesses will have to wait a year before they can use the federal website to enroll their workers in health insurance through a program called shop. those with 50 or fewer employees will have to sign up the old fashioned way. >> small businesses will be able to enroll directly in a shop plan through an insurer, agent or broker and can get certified for a tax credit after they enroll. >> reporter: the administration said the delay was necessary to give its tech team time to fix the troubled website for individual

nbc's kristen welker is at the white house. hello again, kristen. tell us, what does an improvement look like? >> reporter: well, according to the administration, an improvement would look like the website being able to support as many as 50,000 users at one time. they say that is their goal by midnight tonight. as you pointed out, they say they're close to that goal. i just smoke with an administration official who reiterated they are on track to meet that benchmark. but tech experts continue to work around the clock to make sure that actually happens. president obama talking to barbara walters during an exclusive interview, saying that ultimately he thinks despite all of these glitches that this health care law will wind up on the right side of history. he's said this will be an important legacy issue for him. administration officials say that they have made a lot of progress on the website. they point to a couple of factors. the first is the error rate. they say the error rate has been significantly decreased since healthcare.gov was initially ro

kristen welker is live at the white house for us. are they trying to low expectations or saying anything at all? >> reporter: i think they are trying to manage expectations. the administration saying look it is not going to be a relaunch. it's not a magical date. there are still going to be problems with healthcare.gov after this weekend. at the same time, they say that the website will be vastly improved, vast majority of americans will be able to get on and enroll, we'll have a pretty smooth experience doing so. what does the vast majority think? the latest figure we're getting from the administration is that it will be able to support as many as 50,000 users at the same time. now, i've been talking to tech experts who say, look, it's not that simple, not just about making sure the website can support them but making sure they can get through the process quickly and that they aren't experiencing glitches along the way. that's going to be one of the questions that we're watching for over the next 24 to 48 hours. i can tell you about

kristen welker is back with more on that. a lot of people surprised by this. >> it certainly is. one of the striking things really about the story is the colonel is one of the key researchers of women in combat roles. but her words set off a firestorm. the army is looking for a few good men and women, but it's the debate of how good looking the women should be in the promotional materials that caused her to step down from her job on friday. colonel arnhard was in charge of an army research project, women transitioning into combat roles. but she got into hot water for writing an e-mail to some of her colleagues, arguing the army should use more average looking women in their ads. according to politico, her e-mail also stated, in general, ugly women are perceived as competent, while pretty women are perceived as having used their looks to get ahead. such photos undermine the rest of the message and may even make people ask if breaking a nail is considered hazardous duty. those words met with a strong backlash inside the ranks. and jackie speier tweeted, they just don't get it. as i

. >> and just outside of that meeting is nbc's kristen welker. kristen, we saw a very different president this week, more than any other time i can remember. he put the weight of office and the failures personally on his own shoulders. you've covered this president for a very long time. have you seen anything like this before? >> i haven't, martin. this was really the most contrite that we have ever seen president obama. the administration behind the scenes in damage control mode in a way that i certainly haven't seen before either. i think the only instance that comes close is back in 2011 during the debt ceiling debate, when the nation came close to defaulting on its loans. you could sense the anxiety here at the white house. that's really the only instance it's come close to this. and, of course, some people are jumping to the conclusion that this is similar to bush's handling of katrina. i can tell you that if you bring that up here at the white house, they reject that. a lot of expletives start flying around. they say these are apples and or

kristen welker, does the white house realize how much trouble they are in? >> i think they do. i heard you talk about comparisons to katrina. i can tell you the expletives start flying when you bring that up at the white house. they don't linebacker that comparison. they know this is perhaps the most serious moment of this presidency of they know they are in damage control mode. that's why you saw president obama contrite, falling on his sword, to some extent, saying he fumbled the ball. they continue with damage control today. meeting with insurance executives. one industry insider telling me that tensions are expected to be huge at this meeting. the insurance companies feeling as though the president shifted the political burden on them. how is this going to work, offer plans that have already been canceled. they are putting out a number of fires. when you ask them about the president's second term dpend ark, it's not surprising they say they are working on doing big things. andrea, hard to see how immigration reform gets past, get a broader budget deal passed when they are p

nbc's kristen welker, we appreciate it. it appears the government shutdown didn't really slow our economic recovery. labor department announcing today u.s. payrolls jumped by 204,000 last job, far above wall street expectations. and the department also revised the prior two months about 60,000 higher. my quick take? more americans are working. that is very good news. however, even 200,000 new jobs a month is still going to take about five years to get the u.s. back to prerecession unemployment levels, at least according to some analysis. so it's a long steep climb. joining us to talk about it, former chief economist jared bernstein and elaine chow. this is a pretty good report, didn't you think? >> i think we're always glad when there's positive job growth and creation numbers. what is really distressing is that, number one, the unemployment rate ticked upward from 7.2% to 7.3%. and the labor participation rate dropped .4%. this means that conditions are still softer than what we would like and that a lot of workers are sti

nbc's kristen welker is live for us there. kristen, we know the president met with insurance companies yesterday to promote his proposal that would allow millions of americans who received those cancellation notices to keep their plans for one more year. what's next for the president? >> reporter: well, craig, i anticipate that president obama is going to continue to explain this fix to the american people, to work with insurance companies, to actually implement this plan. we know that on monday he is going to join in a conference call with some of his supporters to flesh out how he hopes this will all work. but i've been speaking to officials within the insurance industry. they are skeptical about the practicality of all of this for a couple of reasons, craig. one, the timing. the enrollment deadline comes up in a month. and remember insurance companies spent about a year calculating these insurance plans in the first place. so there's a lot of questions about how they're going to be able to backtrack so quickly and recalcula

"a family tragedy." state senator creigh deeds recovering here at the university of virginia medical center. one hospital official telling us he is listed in fair condition this morning. this as investigators try to figure out how this could have happened. creigh deeds is a fixture in virginia politics, a state senator since 2001. he made a high-profile but unsuccessful bid for governor four years ago. but now he's at the center of a family tragedy. state police say tuesday morning he was stabbed multiple times, apparently by his own son, 24-year-old austin gus deeds who then fatally shot himself. >> based on the evidence we have right now, we are looking into this as an attempted murder and suicide. >> it all started here at deeds rural virginia home when an altercation between father and son turned violent. officials say the state senator was stabbed in the head and chest. >> deeds was able to leave the scene on foot. he encoun

i'm kristen welker in for andrea mitchell. we're watching two big races on election day that could provide a blueprint for what to do and what not to do in major political contests to come. joining me for our daily fix chris cillizza, host of "in play." tim russert and editor mark murray. thanks for being here this afternoon. luke, i want to start with you in virginia. polls showing a close race. mcauliffe has a little bit of a lead there. it all depends on turnout. what are you seeing so far? >> indeed, kristen, turnout is the name of the game in the commonwealth of virginia. so far in the precinct in mclane virginia, quite a wealthy enclave, which has definitely leaned democratic in the last few years, turnout is about normal, 20 to 20% race. pretty much on path to what you see in a governor's race. various reports around the area, some in arlington county show a more robust turnout. hearing about that, cuccinelli strongholds on the southwest part of the state. from various operatives in both camps trig to work the reps a li

thank you very much, kristen welker. well, a warning from boeing has some airlines pulling their 787 dreamliners out of service. boeing warns the megaplanes may have problems potentially with icing their engines and urging carriers to avoid flying them near high level thunderstorms. japan airlines has pulled the dreamliners from some international routes all together. boeing and general interest who make the engines are working to fix the issue. besides japan airlines some other carriers affected lust tan za, united and c app thay pacific. >> a huge system bringing rain and snow is moving east. that could spell trouble for the thanksgiving holiday. already blamed for the deaths of forepeople out west. arizona, one of the states getting hammered by the nasty weather had a lot of flooding and mishaps to deal with there, including bitter cold. meteorologist dylan dreyer is here with what that means for the folks hitting the roads for the holiday. that poor biker. >> right into the puddle. arizona ended up with their record

kristen welker joins me. this is amazing. two supervisors in the detail investigated for an incident in the hey adams hotel across the park from where you're standing right now. >> one involved in the incident at hey adams. i can tell you a source familiar with the incident, started last may, that's when they say the supervisor was at the hotel, as you pointed ow, a hotel across the street from the white house. he apparently met a woman there, went up to her hotel room. during the course of being there, he decided to remove the bullets from his gun and then he left leaving one bullet in that hotel room. he realized his mistake, went back to retrieve the bullet and that essentially caused the hotel to contact the white house, secret service, that sparked an investigation. ultimately he was removed from his position on the president's detail to another position within the secret service. then in a swent investigation it was determined, and they are still looking into this, that zamora may have been responsible for sending what

kristen welker, those three changes, if you will, that were announced in the last 24 hours. the optics, talk about that. >> these are certainly new optics, but polling numbers have borne out that this health care law has been a drag on the president's approval numbers. obviously these signature accomplishment of the president, president obama, a big campaign theme. he talked about. so these incremental fixes, these delays, have certainly been a problem for the white house. they're seeking to get a handle on and they haven't been able to do it quite yet. we'll be tracking it very closely. >> do you think this will be the end of it on saturday or is this the second or third chapter of what might be ten chapters long? >> from where i think this is the second or third chachter. obviously there have been so many delays. house republicans have launched a flurry of inquiries into the health care law, they won't let it go. this will be the signature issue of the 2014 campaign. >> the president's polling taking a hit here. his approval rating either hitting or tieing all-time lows in

kristen welker has more on that front morning. kristen, good morning. >> kate, good morning to you. >> reporter: the obama administration says the tech experts have been working 24/7 to get the site running smoothly for most americans by tomorrow but they're also trying to downplay expectations. they say this won't be a magical date or a relaunch. according to analysts, though, the president's credibility is on the line. it's crunch time for the obama administration and with the president's poll numbers at record lows, the stakes for vastly improving the health care website by saturday couldn't be higher. >> they have got to come through with a pretty successful completion of a lot of the glitches supposedly they have been working on. >> reporter: the administration says over the past month, tech experts have made hundreds of improvements to healthcare.gov, decreasing error rates and increasing it's speed and ib insist they're on track to have the website support 50,000 users at one time. >> if the bear minimum cannot get online,

i'm kristen welker in for andrea mitchell. both republicans and democrats woke up this morning with a win to brag about, but what do the victories by chris christie and terry mcauliffe mean for political battles around the corner? joining me now for our daily fix, chris cillizza and "washington post" editorial columnist ruth marcus. thanks to all of you for being here this afternoon. chris, i want to start with you with the big takeaways. you had chris christie, mcauliffe winning last night. what were your takeaways? who were the big winners and losers? >> the most obvious big winner is chris christie. i thought not only did he win a margin we have not seen a republican win in the better part of the last 25 years in new jersey, but i also thought the speech that he gave his victory speech afterward, which i guarantee you is very carefully crafted and his advisers knew the national media was listening in on. i thought it was quite good. thought it showcased if you like chris christie, why you like him. he was blunt. he communic

. >> kristen welker is with us at the white house. when you're talking to your sources there, what is the temperature of how people are reacting within the west wing not just the issues with the website ralout but the issues now that have come up with people who have lost their plans and now on the heels of president clinton coming out saying, well, this is something the president should do. if they like their lance, they should have them. how much pressure on the west wing with bill clinton's words. >> i think there's no doubt that the folks behind the scenes within the obama administration are feeling a lot of pressure. i've covered this white house for several years. i can tell you there certainly is a sense of urgency to try to deal with these issues that seem to be mounting. i think that's why you see the president coming out today making that announcement. the other part of the strategy, travel to cleveland to talk about the economy. to some extent they are trying to continue to have control of at least part of the message comin
