so, mark obenshain has to decide whether to insist on a taxpayer-funded recount. two things to think about, a recount and the post-election wrangling takes money, right? throughout the campaign, mr. obenshain had a spending advantage over the democrat in this race, mark herring. since the election, and this is interesting, the republican party in the state of virginia, according to public records, does not seem to have contributed anything to mark obenshain to help him with his potential recount effort here. he did, however, get two big freaking fat donations, both which came after the election, both dwarfing everything else he received from this group, which floats on a sea of koch brothers money. this group is apparently setting up the republican attorney general candidate in virginia for his recount effort. this group, funded by koch brothers, is setting him up, not the republican party officially. really interesting. also, whether or not mark obenshain demands a recount in the next ten days in virginia, he also has another option, even beyond the recount, and

the attorney general's race, though, between mark obenshain, and republican mark herring, that polled close from the beginning. it has never been anything other than too close to call since the polls closed last week. by the day after election day, there were only about 200 votes between them. by the day after that, there were something like 700 votes between them. by this morning, the number of votes between them was down to 17. 17 votes? over the hours today, the margin between the two candidates flipped sides and crept up to 117 votes, out of more than 2.2 million cast. it is this close in virginia. here's the thing, though. here's the problem. fairfax county. virginia has 95 counties. fairfax county up there in the top right, fairfax county by population is by far the most ginormous county in the state. it also leans really quite democratic. president obama in 2012 won virginia by about 115,000 votes. his margin of victory in fairfax county was nearly 85,000 votes. that's where he got that margin. so, yeah, fairfax county is the mother lode for democrats, to the extent that virgin

this is the race between republican mark obenshain and democrat mark herring. looks to be very, very, very close at this hour. over the weekend, the chairman of the virginia state republican party told politico that a ken cuccinelli victory was within reach, provided turnout was low enough. the quote from the republican chairman to politico was, quote, if turnouts in the 30s, the low 30s, we're going to win. if it gets higher up in fairfax county, like 40%, it is likely we won't win. well, tonight, in blue fairfax county, virginia, the republican secretary of the county elections board was live tweeting as the results came in. shortly before 9:00 eastern, he posted, we are at 44.3% turnout, we will probably hit plus 45%. virginia republicans were right. the lower the turnout in places like fairfax county, the better it would have been for their candidate. as it happens, though, that did not work out for them tonight. and ken cuccinelli did not win. joining us now is steve kornacki, the host of "up with steve kornacki." thank you for being here. interesting to l
