clint, you were with her. what was it like protecting her? >> well, the biggest problem was crowd control. she was an extremely attractive lady. everybody wanted to be as close to her as possible. this is a photo in italy coming out of mass. you can see the crowd there that just, that generated to see her, and that was a typical situation whether we were in italy, whether we were in india, pakistan, to rock coe, france -- morocco, france, greece or italy. it didn't matter, it was always the same. >> and so let's, tell us a little bit about the size of the secret service detail at that time. >> well, back in 1960 there were only two of us assigned to mrs. kennedy. three were assigned to the children. and 34 were assigned to the president. that meant that at any one time there were only five agents with the president because it was shift work, three shifts a day plus agents out on advance assignments, some people were on leave. >> okay. so let's go through some -- we're going to show you some photos of the kind of challenges the secret service

let me go to you, clint, first. the shooter was apparently targeting a specific teacher. what's your analysis? >> yeah, al. this is some young man who had a vendetta against one specific teacher. and as you know, we've witnessed this over and over again. of course, we had the shooting at come bile in 19 columbine in 1999 and the aurora, colorado, future movie theater, and this one. these three are so close together. again, al, we have a young man with conflict resolution, anger management issues who turns to a fire yarm instead of what the schools have advocated for years which is develop nonviolent conflict resolution skills. >> what does this say to you, james cavanaugh? what is your analysis? >> well, i would say, reverend, the same thing that clint says. it's revenge, and it's suicide. both of those things are working together. you see that in a lot of these mass shootings. probably going to be some mental illness coming into play. and, you know, it's a slow burn. i mean, the sheriff said he had a molotov cocktail was in the school. he didn't do it yesterday. it proba

clint, you are inside it you don't know what is being broadcast. you are dealing with chaos there. >> yes, they were doing every day could. at 1:00 o'clock, the doctor came out and said that we can't do anything more. the president is dead. and so when that happened, the president's closest aide said clint, we need to cast it to transport his body back to washington. and i said that i would see what i could do. i'd range to the administrator of the hospital and ordered the best casket they had to be delivered to the emergency room for the president. the nurses began to prepare the body to be placed within the casket. and as we found out that the people in texas decided that we needed to have not topsy done in dallas before we could leave. and you have to understand that at that time in 1963, it was not a federal crime to kill a president. it was a state crime. and so the state law of texas prevailed. and so they told us that they would have to do the autopsy their. we asked them how long would it take, and they said hours or maybe a day. and we sai

clint van zandt, thank you for your time. appreciate it so much. fbi profiler, nbc analyst, clint van zandt with us tonight here on "the ed show," reporting on this terrible situation in colorado. let's turn now to lee ann greg at arapahoe high school in centennial, colorado. what is the latest? what can you tell us about the deceased? >> reporter: hi, ed. i don't know about the deceased yet. i don't know his name. earlier today, they had not revealed at all. all we know is when the police entered, they found him with self inflicted gunshot wound. a news conference ended a few minutes ago. you can see the high school behind me. this is where it happened. and, of course, not far from columbine high school that everyone has come to know so well. >> how quickly did police get there? tell us the timing, about how long this was, and how quickly it unfolded. >> reporter: well, the first calls came in during the lunch hour, a little after 12:30 local time. and the s.w.a.t. team was there within the hour. and within minutes, they didn't hesitate to go insi

joining me is former fbi profiler and msnbc analyst, clint van zandt. you've got a lot of experience on these things, what are your thoughts. >> it's interesting. i've worked real bombings and bomb threats, chris. one thing i've seen in the past is when you have threats, many times you'll get multiple locations called in. you know, we're using the term "abundance of caution" and i think after the marathon bombing, obviously we have to do that. but the statistical probability of somebody being able to get into four different locations, set four different explosive devices and get out, when you see that many threats of that many devices from a profiling standpoint, you have to start thinking more on the side of a hoax as opposed to a real type of threat. and, chris, when you look at the four targets that have been named, two admin buildings, a dorm and a classroom building where final exams are going on, again, you have to think the primary target is likely that classroom building. the other three may very well be red herrings that are thrown in to try to

do you want to say anything about that, clint? >> it was very emotional. writing of the book themselves, though, getting that material out, talking to lisa and really unloading that emotional baggage i had held within myself for so long was very beneficial to me. it was cathartic. i really am glad that i've done it because i'm much better now than i was. we started the process, i could barely talk about it without breaking down because it was so painful. and many of the agents are the same way. we had never talked about the assassination among ourselves as agents, we had never talked about it with family members, we had never talked about it with anybody. i testified to the warren commission, and i had one interview on "60 minutes," but other than that we had never talked about the assassination at all. >> you the only one alive -- [inaudible] >> i'm the only one alive that was on the presidential vehicle. there are three other agents, former agents alive who were on the follow-up car. >> so i think we should get to the book signing now and thank you all f

answering to this, as a transnational and asian american, it has meant a really skewed picture of mass clint. mike says the bad guy image by hollywood suggests we're numb. the idea of the quote, weak asia man, sui? i've seen you make lots of faces. is there a space where asian american women and men can work together to defeat these stereotypes or do you think that each have carved out their roles? >> i think my good friends here, my big concern here is we're recenterring this conversation around men and ouren own whiteness. men can also be feminists and we're supposed to support that on that journey. it subtracts entirely from the violence against women of color. it really is harmful too, it really reinforces their role of many dominant, we are reinforcing them of positive views of themselves to then be good to deal with us as asian american women. when in reality i don't think that needs to happen. like i think that it's really unfortunate that because asian men feel hurt by white heteropatriarchy, and you know you have all this negative stereotypes about you or you have to be quiet and su
