lee, but on the first day of school in new jersey, in ft. lee, new jersey, this year, ft. lee discovered that somebody had closed down two of their three lanes. you could still get on to the bridge, but a trip that normally took 30 minutes now lasted more than four hours. happy first day of school, everybody. the backup was so bad, it gridlocked not just near the bridge, but basically, the whole town. and the closing down of those lanes was a complete surprise. that bridge is so vital to the people who live around there, that officials typically send out a press release any time they're doing any sort of construction work or closing a lane or anything else that might disrupt the commute, because the knock-on effects are so significant for that part of that state. this time, though, there was no notice. they didn't tell local police, didn't tell local officials. nobody knew what was coming. two of the three lanes just closed down and traffic backed up and that's how law enforcement found out it was happening. commuters could not get to work. the traffic backed up on to loca

jersey, which is saying something when it comes to new jersey. specifically this, september 9, the town of fort lee new jersey, all but one lane of traffic to the busiest train in the nation. the george washington bridge got abruptly shut down. no warning, no apparent reason. the lane closures cause traffic armageddon. a 30-minute commute to new york city took two hours. nobody had any warning. cars could not move in the entire town of fort lee. it was gridlock that went on for the better part of a week. nobody had any idea why it was happening. official explanation from people in charge of the new jersey side of the bridge was lanes had to be closed for a traffic study. that was news to their boss, the guy responsible for the for the authority and bridge. when he was asked why it got shut down. the head of the port authority under oath said he was not aware of an traffic study. then, "the wall street journal" reported that the lane closures and therefore the traffic disaster had been ordered by one specific nameable guy. a former republican mayo

it involves this bridge between the state of new jersey and new york city. all week long, i've been calling this the busiest bridge in the country. if you go to the website, they're proud to tell you it is not just the busiest bridge, it is the busiest bridge in the whole world. you say so. the bridge is huge. it takes it more than $600 million every year in revenue in tolls. and that's how rich the agency is that runs it and that takes in the tolls. that's why it's a real perk of the job of being governor of new jersey or new york that you get to appoint people to the agency which runs this bridge like a casino. he was trying to maximize his election trying to stage manage his election so it would set him up. his campaign tried to set him up to make sure he had bipartisan appeal. one of the new jersey democrats who reportedly was asked to endorse chris christie but said no, was the mayor of ft. lee. right at the spot where that busiest bridge in the world connects to new jersey. two weeks after that democratic mayor refused to endorse chris christie, a long

the issue here though, not just for new jersey and certainly not for ft. lee, but for potentially the whole country and chris christ christie's national role as a political leader, it's not whether the bridge is -- the question, the reason why this is an important national story and why democratic groups and the democratic national committee are getting on board, the question is why did this all happen in the first place? what was the motive for doing this in the first place? was it political retaliation? was it chris christie abusing the powers of his office to get ahead politically or at least to get revenge politically? as fascinating as the details have been on this story and the new details are better than like every episode of "the sopranos" except where carmelo pulls the gold off ceiling, the basic issue here and the reason it's a national story here and not just the most new jersey story of all time is because of what he has not explained. an explanation that seemed -- that is actually emerged as the only logical explanation. democrats in new jerse

so what exactly is the problem in new jersey? >> well, the problem is new jersey is they allow the edibles for these kids that have these ailments, the edibles being the oil you can put on the food that they ingest. the problem is that the oils aren't available here in new jersey because it was just signed into law recently. so here you have kids that are allowed to take it but they can't get -- the products is not in any of the medical marijuana clinics. so there's a proposal before the legislature to allow shipment from say colorado because it already has this plant, this oil, this extract that the kids can take to help with their ailments. but christie is refusing to sign it afraid that this is going to expand illicit pot use. but -- >> you don't get stoned. >> exactly. so it's a moot point for them. >> in that case, i think chris christie, that he's being a hard ass for no real reason. the children need it and it's also evident of how differently various states, more than a dozen states have medical marijuana, washington stat

a month ago that question was only being asked in local new jersey media. then the national media and now on capitol hill hill. this is the traffic-gate scandal. at issue is an allegation from the democratic mayor of the new jersey town of ft. lee that sit at the entrance of the george washington bridge. that christie's appointees made a punitive decision to close two of the three access lanes on the bridge leading into his town. causing a traffic nightmare for ft. lee residents. half hour commutes taking four hours and kids showing up late to their first day of school. christie's appointees claimed they closed the lanes in order to do a traffic study. but the head of the agency that oversees the bridge said he has heard nothing about a terrific study. christie's allies closed the access lane to get back at the lee mayor because the mayor had conspicuously refused to support the mayor for reelection. christy has denied that allegation, even tried to turn them into a joke. >> i worked the cones, i was actually the guy out there, i was in overalls and a hat,
