tom, let's continue on that note. if i was coming out from either a treatment program or a therapeutic community, or even if i was in a mutual support group, but i felt that, you know, that one hour, even once a day or whatever, was not really connecting me, what would a peer support program provide for me? well, it's a good question. and first of all, you know, we always tell peers they're not counselors, so they don't give advice, they don't diagnose, but they're also not 12 step sponsors, and i think that's an important distinction. but a peer-to-peer experience, as someone's entering the community from whatever-a treatment or institution-the peer will help them have a soft landing and provide them with community resources, such as? community connection- -well, housing, education, employment, venues to that, maybe it may be something like childcare. it could be instrumental, it could be emotional, it could be educational, or it could be what we call affiliational. so, affiliation means connection to family, communi

as much as we're awe of tom., tom was in awe of his family. what a big family it is. if you spend more than five minutes talking to him, you knew all about his 17 grandchildren and two daughters. he would include his dog. when asked about how he define himself, tom said, first, and foremost, i think of myself as the husband of a remarkable woman. it was so clear how much he loved annette more than anything. the nearly 60 years they spent married today, only bright ended twinkle in his eye. thank you annette. for everything that you do to make sure that the human rights torch that tom lit with you stays lit. tom said he was a humble worker in the vineyard of the enterprise to make this world a saner place. we all know the truth, that he had a unique call to conscious, a permanent vigilance against discrimination, genocide, oppression and anti-semitism. as annette, he was democracy's staunchest defender and that was the core value of his existence. you may not know that he was also a staunch defender of the rights of women. he led the charge to expand access to healthca

why is that important, tom? well, you know, we still live in a society that stigmatizes and shames mental illness and addiction, and that carries over into people's recovery, so you know, we're trying to train advocates to stand up and speak out to the community, to the greater community, but also to systems. when we talk about recovery-oriented systems of care, you can't do it without people in recovery. you can't do it without the organized recovery community, because where does recovery live? it lives where we live: it lives in our hearts, it lives on our streets, it lives in our communities, and we bring that valuable experience to that whole rosc, recovery-oriented systems of care, equation. and so that systems advocacy and that public education are still really vital and really, really important. in philadelphia we have, with the department of mental health, we have taking recovery to the streets, where a person in recovery actually goes out to a recovery house. you know, they may go out to a recovery prog
