the folk singer and civil rights activist pete seeger. he was a legendary musician and progressive, ahead of his time in crossing barriers to the fight for justice. in 1957, seeger attended civil rights workshops with martin luther king and rosa parks. it was there that he first played for dr. king an old spiritual that he had updated with new verses and a new title, a song that became the anthem for the movement. >> i sang a song called "we shall overcome." afterwards, a friend of mine drove dr. king to a speaking engagement in kentucky, and she remembers him sitting in the back seat saying "we shall overcome, that song really sticks with you, doesn't it?" >> in 1963, seeger helped register voters deep in the heart of mississippi. and he helped teach students during the freedom summer of 1964. >> pete, you know, played a constant role in the movement long before i was involved in anything having to do with civil rights, pete seeger was doing that. >> seeger never gave up his fight for justice. later, he marched against the vietnam war. a

pete, why are the federal investigations? this is simplistic but why are these just state investigations into minor league malfeasance? >> in the case of chris christie, there is a state legislature investigation but there's also potential federal cases, misuse of federal funds one of the allegations is is they misused the hurricane sandy funds. so there's a federal hook, although i must say, when this case first broke you got the very clear impression the federal government wasn't exactly charging to get into it. i think things have changed since the mayor came forward and they seem to be a little more into it now. and the mcdonnells' case, virginia really has extremely week laws against accepting gifts. the question here is, this really troubling question of, it's a federal law to deprive your employer, in this case the government, of your honest services. that's the federal government. but it's not going to be easy to show because they have to show that in exchange for all of this, the governor performed official acts. now

united states, the united states left passed away at age 94 and i was -- i kind of liked the music of pete /saoeger, but what i liked about him was what he meant to peoples' movements all around this country and around the world, his influence. he was certainly an icon of the folk revival of the 1960's, but his music was really a means to an end. his end was making the world a better place. the new york times said his agenda paralleled the concerns of the american left. in the last 60 years, wherever there was a struggle for social and economic justice, odds are you would find pete seager and his banjo cajoling ing crowds to sing along. from the civil rights movement to vietnam protests to occupy new york to recent campaigns on climate change, he seemed to be everywhere. he maintained a contagious optimism that should give all of us hope who continue to struggle. i would like to play a brief clip of 2012 interview where he explains his hope for the future. pete seeger passed away. he foundsed a radical student newspaper and described himself as a communist with a small c. he was fighting alongside unions and was indicted for contempt of congress for defying the house un-american activities committee. he had success with his musical kbrup, but many songs came fame through other groups. he was a voice of protest during vietnam playing for tens of thousands in d.c. then 40 years later he stood in front of the lincoln memorial alongside his grandson and bruce springste springsteen singing "this land is your land." he was a kennedy center honoree and a member of the rock and roll hall of fame. his impact on musicians from rock to folk, his tireless efforts to clean new york's hudson river and in the later years participating in the occupy wall street movement, pete seeger was 94 years old. >>> we want to get to the latest about the weather. the deep freeze continuing across so many states. 2,500 flights have already been cancelled because of the bitter cold. it it c
