hello, i'm ashleigh banfield, it is tuesday march 25th and welcome to "legal view." any minute we expect to hear from officials on this devastating mudslide that rocked an entire rural community in washington state. here's what i can tell you about what we know so far. a number of people unaccounted for has dramatically increased from 18 on sunday to 176 by the end of the day yesterday. the fire chief is stressing that this is just a list of names, that it's not actually a tally of anticipated fatalities. still, after four days, hope that any people will be found alive is dwindling. six bodies were found yesterday, bringing the death toll to 14. and what was a search and rescue operation has slowly been shifting to one of just a recovery operation. in just a short time ago, president obama mentioned the government's response on his trip overseas to the hage. >> i just spoke to governor insley, who swiftly declared a state of emergency. i signed that emergency declaration to make sure he's got all the resources he needs. my administration is in contact with them on an

i'm ashleigh banfield. we're digging deeper into this new radar data that has come from thailand. yes, it is day 11, and we're getting new radar data. and it could actually impact the search for the missing flight 370. thailand's military radar may have detected this jet after it went off its original flight plan from kuala lumpur to beijing, back on march 8th. at 1:22 a.m., flight 370 was heading northeast. that was the plan. but then it vanished from thai radar. a thai military official tells cnn that six minutes later, radar picked up an unknown signal at 1:28 a.m. and that could have been flight 370, but this time, it was heading southwest. this does support what we already knew, that that plane had diverted from its northeast path to beijing, taking a very sharp left it turn and heading southwest in the direction towards the indian ocean. but after that, it's all a mystery. sadly, it seems to just remain a mystery day after day. joining me to talk about how this new radar data may hp to unravel the mystery, this boeing 777 pilot knows a lot. les abend has been helping us navi

hello, everyone, i'm ashleigh banfield. it is monday, march 3rd and welcome to "legal view." it's being called the biggest crisis in europe in the 21st century and it is growing by the hour. it is the sudden occupation of crimea in southern ukraine by russian forces in nondescript uniforms. and the source of that quote is the british foreign secretary, william hague, who turned up today in kiev, the ukrainian capital, in a show of solidarity with that country's newly formed pro western government. secretary of state john kerry is due in kiev tomorrow. today, vice president biden spoke with the russian prime minister, urging a quick pullout of the russian forces. the entry of international monitors, and dialogue with ukrainian leaders. at last report, ten ukrainian military bases in the pro russian crimean peninsula were surrounded by thousands of russian fighters. and though the standoff so far has been mostly peaceful, now comes the ultimatum. russian's black sea fleet is warning, ukrainian troops to surrender by 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, 10:00 p.m. eastern time here in america or

i'm ashleigh banfield. it is thursday march 13th. welcome to "legal view." it's now been six days since a wide bodied jet carrying 239 people just vanished en route to beijing. investigators don't know any more today than they did six days ago. in fact, the malaysian government's pointman on the search says, "with every passing day the task becomes more difficult." and here's what we can tell you. that is one of the very few statements from the malaysian officials on which there is total agreement. the latest apparent dead end might be a "the wall street journal" report that data transmissions from the plane's engines indicate that it actually might have been flying for four additional hours after its last confirmed contact off south vietnam. well, that could put flight 370 and all of the people in it anywhere inside the circle that you see here on your screen. and it is massive, i agree. this takes you from northern china to northwest australia. but the malaysians say not so fast. that's just wrong. the last data they say came shortly after the plane took o
