martin luther king? these bring such emotions for our youth, and i was just wondering what advice you could have and thank you for your time. >> guest: okay. well, in terms of the youth, i think that one of the most powerful things that we can use and, you know, malcolm x talks about this in his autobiography was his love of reading, his love of learning. i think part of the problem is finding out the story. and i think that i was very, very fortunate to live in the household i lived in and i grew up in and the minnesota to haves i -- mentors i had to sort of find out the storiment but then also once with you find out the story, what do you do? and anger certainly i understand anger, but you should use that knowledge as fuel to become whether it's an organizer and an activist, whether it's a teacher, whether it's a doctor, whether it's some kind of lead e right? so i think that anger is best redirected into something that is hugely, hugely positive for the entire african-american community including thin

luther king day by holding a "martin luther king black party" where white partygoers don basketball jerseys, flashed gang signs, antering fro made watermelons. when posting photos of the event is social media, they used hastags like "hood." more recently, three white students were expelled from their fraternity at the university of mississippi for hanging a noose and plastering a flag in the confederate symbol on a statue of james meredith, civil rights euro who was the first african-american to attend the university. the fraternity was also suspended after the incident, which took place in february during black history month. further north that one of the world's top universities, students of color say they are tired of people suggesting they don't belong. like students at harvard recently began a photo montage campaign called "i, too, am harvard" that went viral. students hold signs that say "having an opinion does not make me an angry black woman post quote and "no, i will not teach you how to twerk." a harvard student made this promo video for the campaign. >> there's that momen

i was glad you mentioned martin luther king because it is probably impossible in jefferson school which used to be an all black school during segregation, probably impossible to talk about this topic without referencing earlier this year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the historic march on washington, martin luther king's iconic i have a dream speech and as we were going over the speech this summer and it was all over the newspapers i went back and actually read it and noticed a portion that hasn't gained as much attention, i want to read a small segment of it tonight, today. in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check, when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall air. this was the promise that all men, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the inalienable right of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. it is obvious today, he said, that americans have defaulted on this promissory notes in so far

he inspires martin luther king jr. to come out more forcefully in the war in 1967. so i think with the files, they show they were fearful of stokely carmichael. and those clips show him saying, hell no, we won't go. and that's the phrase from the anti-war movement. he's not just a black power activist but a human rights activist and anti-war activist. >> you're right about the civil rights pioneer that is a young carmichael crossed paths with poet sterling brown, tony morrison, who we are familiar with teaching carmichael's freshman english class, howard, how did these relationships shape his activism? >> they shaped it very, very importantly and indelibly. he learns from activists like fanny lou hamer in mississippi, and they teach him the nuts and bolts of social justice and a deep love of black people. he always says he's organizing out of love and undying love for black people. so he's not the angry, young man, the profit of rage that he's been made out to be. that's the stereo type. he's really a complicated charismatic but also sensitive, intelligent and intel

so malcolm x was here, martin luther king, jr. was here. where was stokely carmichael in that continuum? >> i think stokely is a bridge figure and fits in with dr. king and mal malcolm x as a figure ws on the stage of talking about human rights and pushing the envelope. he's the only major black power icon who is also a civil rights activist. so he doesn't just come into activism in the mid, late '60s when things goat get the hot. he knew dr. king -- >> ifill: they got along well. they were a good fit. stokely cries when king is assassinated. he considers him a friend, older brother, mentor, and father figure, but he was also mentored by women, so he's a very interesting figure who's also a critic of the vietnam war. he's a critic of economic injustice. so black power only tells a part of the story. >> ifill: it's interesting, even though he was considered to be the most difficult, the most controversial of the three of them in lots of ways, he lived longer than either of them did and was not assassinated like the other two. >> both king an
