michelle's friends who were in michelle's apartment building left to meet her at the bar. but as they walked outside, they saw something unusual. it was a red pickup truck with a woman in the back of the truck flailing her arms. >> all we knew was there was a woman who was in distress in this truck. >> michelle's friends went to the bar, learned that michelle had already left and went back to michelle's apartment. that's when they saw the red truck again, this time with no one in the back. further down the road, they found michelle's jacket, some jewelry, a blood stain, and the tooth. >> there was a watch found that had been broken and had stopped alt at like 1:24 in the morning, which matched up with the witness statements they saw this woman screaming in the back of the truck after 1:00. >> we were hoping for the best, but i mean, when you hear something like that, then you can't help but think the worst. >> her friends now wondered whether it might have been michelle in the back of that truck. >> straddling the tailgate flailing her arms, like, screaming. and at the tim

michelle was dead within seconds. he positioned her arm underneath her body so the needle mark wouldn't be easily noticeable. he threw the syringes and propofol bottles into a plastic bag, which he tossed into the dumpster behind michelle's rented home, not realizing the obvious, that those serial numbers could be traced. >> i believe that the pain was such that she entrusted oliver o'quinn to administer the pain reliever, and he took advantage of that trust and intentionally took her life. >> oliver o'quinn went on trial for first-degree murder. his defense claimed he gave michelle the propofol to help relieve the pain from her migraine headache, but accidentally gave her too much. >> there's no way that the administration of propofol to michelle herndon was an accidental death. this was an action consistent with homicide. >> the jury didn't believe it either. o'quinn was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. >> this is the first reported case ever involving murder by the us

>>> no one knew why roxanne ellis and michelle abdill were murdered. the motive didn't appear to be robbery. blood patterns indicated the women had been shot inside the truck. four shell casing from a .25 caliber pistol were found near the bodies. there were no foreign fingerprints inside the truck but there were several overlapping shoe prints from a man's shoe. >> this was on kind of the chrome-plated bumper area that had kind of a dirty grime, kind of oxidized layer on it. and when the individual stepped on the bumper, he left a negative impression. >> the autopsies revealed the women were killed the day they went missing, and there were no signs of sexual assault. the medical examiner found bluish-green polyester fibers in and around the fatal wounds. >> either the gun was fired through an item like a blanket or some intermediate object or intermediate target and then fired into the victims' heads. >> and there was a gash in roxanne's calf near the taped bindings, which suggested the killer bound the women inside the apartment, led them down to gar

, michelle, thanks very much. after a hint of spring, winter returned today to the midwest. two people were killed in a 50 car pileup on the snowy ohio turnpike. fort wayne, indiana, got nearly seven inches. chicago is now over 79 inches for the season. and that's about 10 shy of the all-time record. tonight that storm is moving east with white-out conditions in upstate new york and new england. caroline tucker is with our cbs affiliate in rochester new york, wroc-tv. caroline? >> reporter: scott, the heavy snow started midmorning here in rochester and is not expected to let up until late tonight. at the peak of the storm, snow will fall up to two inches an hour and wind gusts have reached 45 miles per hour already. creating visibility of less than a quarter mile. a blizzard warning was posted in upstate new york where we could get as much as 20 inches. we've already had seven feet of snow this winter here in rochester. just yesterday it was starting to feel like spring, it was in the 50s. here it's now in the 20s

michelle was there right when the fire started. a few minutes later you can see the flames and smoke spreading in the building. just 13 minutes later, this view from down the street shows how intense the fire got. to give you more background on the property, this is the mission bay 360 project a $230 million development near at&t park and ucsf mission bay. it was supposed to be hundreds of apartments $360,000 the cost and retail space. they broke ground a year ago and the company doesn't know what started the fire but thanked the firefighters. >>> this fire looked a lot like the massive santana row fire that happened almost 12 years ago. it's still the biggest fire in san jose's recorded history. the huge complex was under construction as well at the time. winds were so strong on that day, flying embers set fire to apartment buildings a mile south of the area. san jose firefighter who worked the santana row inferno back in 2002 says there's no way to quickly put out a fire this big. >> essentially any building that large under cons
