happened at 9:30 last night near uc santa barbara. we have been the scene with investigators all day and are live with the latest. reporter: i can tell you the shooting unfolded in the heart of this college town. a busy street where some of these students were celebrating graduation. you see the window behind me. those flowers cover where the bullets pierced through. this deli one of nine crime scenes police are now investigating. >> a small college town, shattered by violence overnight. a lone gunman going on a ten-minute shooting spree, killing six people, sending students scrambling for safety. >> people started running in and getting down and huddling in corners. >> i got on the ground and then saw the victim, barely breathing. >> police call it a planned mass murder. >> he lifted up a little black pistol. she shot, and i just felt it pass right by my face. >> the driver of the black bmw methodically gunning down pedestrians as officered returned fire. >> multiple officers in first engagement and one in the second engagement. >> t

tonight on that deadly rampage near uc santa barbara in isle vista. some people that new elliot roger spoke. he left a manifestto and video a few minutes before he died through isle vista killing six people and himself. he talked about hate, revenge and his plans to kill. a child hood friend says that roger was quiet to the point that it did not seem normal. >> he was soft spoken and he would say one word answers but never start a conversation or anything. >> another friend says that roger fan ta advertised against dominating the world and that he complained about his problems with women. the tragedy near uc santa barbara has shaken people in the bay area as well. three of the six victims were from the bay area. all students. 13 people injured and at least one was a college student visiting from the bay area. the university has declared tomorrow a day of mourning and there will be no classes. ann reuben has more from san jose where she spoke to two people that knew the victim. >> the family of george chen was heading to santa barbara to speak with aut

the event was sponsored by the santa barbara response network, uc santa barbara and associated students. three of the victims have been identified as students veronika weiss, katie cooper and christopher martinez. the names of the three other people killed have not yet been released. the seventh victim was the shooter, elliot rodger, who reportedly took his own life. one of the surviving victims is reportedly a student from the university of pacific who lived in alamo. according to the santa rosa mercury news, nick pasichuke suffered serious injuries after police say rodger ran into him with his bmw. he reportedly broke both his legs and had surgery last night. pasichuke was in santa barbara visiting a former san ramon valley high school classmate and fellow polo teammate. >>> elliot rodger reportedly suffered from asperger's syndrome and depression. police say they had three earlier encounters with him including a welfare check last month after his parents were concerned about his mental state. authorities say they determined he was fine and did not think he met the criteria for an inv
