paul wood, bbc news. since the mars rover curiosity landed in 2012, we have been waiting for the answer to the question -- has there ever been life on mars? a fellow atdam, nasa's jet propulsion laboratory. have they discovered anything that suggests that mars could support life? >> one of the wonderful things about this mission is before we were halfway done which what we call be prime mission, we had taken data that told the scientist that ancient mars could have and would have supported life if life existed. >> how do we find out if it did support life? in theory, it could have. >> that is a tricky question. we keep asking mars, are you alive? it keeps answering maybe. he does not say no. detecting life is quite a challenge. we learned that and we learned a lot about detecting life over the past several decades. it may be that to unlock the question of life on mars, we may have to bring pieces of mars back to earth to study on earth with a full complement of equipment and brains we have on our plan. >>
