"today in the bay" bob redell joins us live with more on how school officials will shield students from these rallies. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, scott. very hard to miss. behind me is live oak high school and you'll see they installed a temporary chain link fence and they surrounded the front part of the campus and we've seen at least one no trespassing sign on there, as well. that is what they're doing to shield students from the expected protests expected to take place later this morning when school starts. they plan to be out here when school starts to protest a recent federal court decision that upheld the school's decision back in 2010 to send home four students who wore american flag clothes to school on cinco de mayo in response to students celebrating the mexican holiday. the school banned the shirts arguing it is going to inflame tension and the flag-wearing

nbc's bob redell is at the campus in san jose. bob, many students have said they've invested a lot of money and time in this. >> and at least one showing up today, completely surprised at what happened. i just spoke to the llc, the people that own this building, that had been renting their space to bryman college. the lawyer tells us that their client evicted bryman college because they owe around $80,000 in back rent, that they have been behind in rent for some time. you can see, there's the "no trespassing" sign and the doors are locked her. the lawyer tells us they filed an action with the court in early february, tells us the school did not respond, so an eviction date was set three times, once in march, april, and earlier this month. and each of those times, the property owner, according to the lawyer, agreed to postpone those evictions in an effort to work out a payment schedule with the school. well, yesterday was the last straw. the owner did have the sheriff's office serve an eviction's notice, post those "no trespassing"

"today in the bay" bob redell is live in san francisco. bob, this could create quite a mess and a few unexpected trips to marin. >> it could. some confusion. if you're not paying attention, you could end up having to cross the golden gate bridge and having to come back and pay the $7 toll, assuming that your intention was just to stay in the city. anyone who is going on northbound 101 right now you get through the tunnel and you see the sign that says last access and you are allowed to exit right before you get to the toll plaza and go back about your business in the city. but come sunday, construction crews with the park project realignment will be moving that exit 1,000 feet south. so, be 1,000 feet sooner and if you're not paying attention or aware of it, you'll miss that last exit and be forced on to the golden gate bridge and then having to do a u and paying that $7 toll. the people running this project are getting the word out. be aware of that last exit. going to be about 1,000 feet sooner starting sunday and, of course, more traffi

this brings us, bob redell who is live this morning. he is live out there in san jose and you're out there at cal fire this morning. what are crews out there gearing up. how are they getting ready for this, what could be a very dangerous fire season, bob. >> well, they're expected to be one of the busier fire seasons. good morning to you there, christina. i think the operative word for this fire season is early. cal fire here in morgan hill, they're already at peak staffing. that's a few week earlier than usual. the declaration of the start of the fire season that happened a couple weeks ago and that doesn't happen until a couple weeks from now. we are seeing conditions so dry, we usually don't see these type of conditions from mid to late summer and here we are in may and we're already seeing them and we have a number of fires and there's already been more than 1,500 fires this year alone so far. that's about double what you would normally see at this point in time. governor jerry brown is appearing yesterday on one of the morning talk

bob redell live on the bridge. this will have an impact on bridge this morning. >> could cause congestion if drivers become confused about the last exit. if you're not paying attention, you could end up inadvertently being forced to cross the golden gate bridge if your intention was to stay in the city. heading northbound 101 on the final approach to the golden gate bridge toll plaza, you see the sign that says last exit, right after you get through that tunnel. you see the sign and then you're allowed to exit right before the toll plaza. starting sunday workers will move that exit 1,000 feet to the south. 1,000 feet sooner than you're used to. if you're not paying attention, you'll miss it and you'll be forced to go through the toll plaza and across the golden gate bridge. if you want to get back into the city, you'll have to make a u-turn. they want to give people a heads up about this. realigning the road and moving that exit 1,000 feet south than you're used to. they have landscaping and safety shoulders they h

bob redell joins us live at a gas station in san jose. usually we see a price spike in may, that is not the case this year, it seems. >> an analyst with gasbuddy.com that says we have already seen the peak in prices and prices could drop significantly over the next couple months and we see the prices really get high and then stay at that level for a couple of months. but he's saying by july, the prices right now, let's see we're at roughly $4.17 go down to $3.80 a gallon which would be a great relief for people like this man and other people filling up. take a look at the average gallon of gas price in the bay area. from triple-a overnight. you compare that to just 30 days ago and you can see the prices have increased substantially 25 to roughly 30 cents a gallon on average. but this analyst with gasbuddy.com is citing a few reasons why he thinks we peaked. one, the price for a barrel of oil has dropped below $100 over the past couple of days. the price of wholesale gasoline is also down and then you got to look at the refineries. there h

redell, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, bob. just into our newsroom, police have arrested a man in connection with the city's 13th homicide of the year. officers say 22-year-old gabriel alejo stabbed a mother of three to death in her apartment on tuesday. detectives say he knew the victim, 28-year-old teresa maravilla. alejo was booked into jail for murder. >>> and the mother of the bay area woman who died while zip lining in hawaii, they're waiting for answers on what exactly caused the accident. police say the 29-year-old who was originally from santa rosa lived in hawaii. she worked as a guide at the zip lining company. she was zip lining yesterday morning on maui when she fell 150 feet into a deep ravine. by the time the rescuers got to her, it was too late. >> shea go through the gulches and, so it made it kind of difficult. where the body was, where the lady fell, they couldn't access it with the helicopter, so they had to carry her off to the side. >> it's still not exactly clear what happened, whether the line snapped or

bob redell is live in san jose where one of those young men attended high school. good morning. >> reporter: we're talking about george chen. he's one of the six people murdered in isla vista. he attended leland high school here in san jose. this is according to a report and conversation we had with one of his neighbors. earlier this morning a man who we believe is chen's father left the family home in san jose with who we believe was either chen's mother or 10-year-old brother in the back seat. a family friend tells us that later today the family will head down to santa barbara where their 19-year-old son, seen here in a picture from his facebook page, was stabbed to death over the weekend in the mass killing that left seven dead. this friend tells us, that, as you can imagine, the family is in deep grief. this morning a neighbor, who lives across the street, couldn't say enough things about chen, saying he was a wonderful, wonderful boy who used to help out her elderly father with things the like the mail and newspaper. now, chen was studying at uc santa barbara,

nbc bay area's bob redell live in san jose near the starting line. i can only imagine how these riders are going to deal with the heat. >> reporter: well, we spoke with the tour leader, the current leader, good morning, peggy and scott. he said it's pretty simple, there's not much they can do, stay hydrated and drink lots of water. keep in mind, this is not their first rodeo. they've driven in high temps before. of course, usually it's not this hot. stage iii just started about 10, 15 minutes ago out here at lake cunningham park, east san jose, for what will be that gut-wrenching, 100-plus mile journey, up two mountains in the middle of this heat wave. we spoke with the course record this morning, tells us there's little they can do to help the riders cope in these hot temps, except in one area, they will allow riders to feed earlier than usual. in other words, there are restrictions on when riders can go to their chase car or support vehicle for water. today, they'll allow them to do that a little bit earlier than usual. and we're talking about 128

bob redell is live this morning in morgan hill and, bob, they have a pretty good description of this suspect. >> they have a great image of him taken from a surveillance camera here at this target on cochran road. good morning, peggy. you can take a look at it, the most distinguishing characteristic of this young man is the fact that he has a mohawk. according to morgan hill police they consider him to be very armed and dangerous. last night around 9:00 in the parking lot of this target shopping center this man drove up to a woman, a customer and tried to rob her of her purse. she refused. he ended up taking off in his car and we'll now show an image of that car, again, from another surveillance camera's point of view. a white four-door car a dodge neon or chevy cavalier and it has a black bra on the grill. one of those covers that people sometimes put on the front of their cars. according to police, he then after he failed to rob this woman in the target parking lot went down it cochran across 101 to a subway shop and showed the shotgun there. and ended up robbing that store. took s

. >> "today in the bay" bob redell live with some of the reasons behind that drought. good morning, bob. >> good morning, scott and lauren. it is counterintuitive. usually as we get closer to memorial day that's when you see the prices at the pump start to spike and they stay at that level throughout the summer. but what a couple analysts are say is that right now the prices we're seeing here, $4.17 a gallon and they're saying that right now we could be at a peak, that we could see gas drop back down to the $3.80 range in the next couple of months. the latest numbers from aaa as far as where we are for a gallon of gas here in san jose is $4.23, oakland $4.22 and san francisco $4.32. if you look at where those prices were a month ago, you can see, quite a spike over the past 30 days. as much as 25 to 30 cents per gallon. now, analysts with the gas buddy website believes that we possibly seen prices peak for a few reasons. one, the price for a barrel of oil has dropped under 100 bucks. the price of whole sale gasoline has also dropped. many of the refineries have done th
