gary joins us now from indianapolis. gary great to have you on the program. what is indianapolis, what are the hosts doing to try to squeeze more out of this. >> a lot of changes indeed. you know the tradition, the iconic nature of the indianapolis motor speedway and this race, the 98th running this year. it has suffered in recent years as other -- forms of motor sport has as well. they are looking to attract a younger audience. they are trying to get younger people into the indianapolis motor speedway. among the things, glamor camping. so folks can come in and camp overnight at the speedway on the infield. certainly the food service and the vendors around the speedway they have been upgraded. are new vendors there as well, and the suites from the pagoda to the luxury suites along the main straight away, those will continue to offer high-end offerings. but as you know this is a true melting pot of america. you will see a glamour people -- david letterman will be there, one of the team owners, but also the grassroots hoosiers as well on the infield. >> it use

it's indianapolis, indiana. there on april 28th a man in his early 30s was fatally shot during what police suspect was a drive-by shooting. he became the 50th homicide victim in indianapolis this year. the city had a murder race of 6 per 100,000 residents in 2014 and the city is taking various measures to curb gun violence like broadening the police force and launching youth empowerment programs. our foot soldier this week is taking an unconventional approach using art to turn instruments of violence into a symbol of peace. ryan feeney, an indianapolis firefighter since 200 is one of the first responders on emergency calls about gun violence on his city. now commissioned by the sheriff's office he's responding by building a sculpture to commemorate homicide victims. the sculpture would be assembled using more than 150 guns confiscated by the sheriff's office. joining me now from indianapolis is the firefighter and founder of indy art, ryan feeney. >> nice to see you, thanks, melissa. >> you've worked as a firefi

when i covered the indianapolis 500 in 1960, i was the only woman covering it. i couldn't get into gasoline alley, i couldn't get into the press box. now we see women covering everything, which is progress. >> you wrote a book about your daughter. what year was that? >> i didn't write about my daughter. i wrote a book called, "she came to live out loud." that was when i was at the hospice foundation. i interviewed a woman who had breast cancer. >> you lost your daughter to breast cancer. >> i did, 10 years later. 2010. it is emblazoned in my mind. she had given birth to her third child. she said, "i am going to give up working for a while." they came in and said that she had stage four breast cancer. there had been no indication whatsoever. she had a valiant fight in which she wrote a website that was so popular that 60,000 people followed it. i still can't reread it, but she was just amazing. >> how old was she? >> 43. >> what did she do that got her into espn as a producer? was she treated equally? >> she thinks she was treated mostly equally. she had a few po
