their young daughter jennifer was dying of an inoperable brain tumor. her parents were able the see through their grief and think of others. they agreed to donate jennifer's tumor and within just hours of her death, they were working to create a stem cell line from it. we recently heard from the doctor that they're effort rs were successful. now jennifer's stem cell line joins just a handful of lines in the world offering hope for treatment for a disease that hasn't seen progress in decades. finally it was back in 2012 that we med red carson. red and his late wife shared a beautiful love affair from the battlefields of europe to a quiet life in san jose. after his wife's death he established a nursing scholarship at san jose state in her memory. what made it so special is that the scholarship dent just come with money, it came with a healthy dose of red. the students would regularly have dinner at red's house becoming part of his family. earlier this month red passed away at the age of 94. >> what a special man. great smile. >> memorial service earlier

so jennifer was actually dedicated to making sure those animals found their forever home. lou guru rescue partnered with many shelters and agencies including animal care and control here in san francisco. our spca, san jose animal shelter, sacramento, contra costa, kern county, merced and many others. in addition to running lou guru, jennifer was an active volunteer with many other rescue groups. is like we said she worked with spca with [speaker not understood]. shelter cat rescue and housed and cared for foster cats until they found a permanent placement. she organized volunteers for walk a dog regular queue where she grew the workforce and coordinated staff adoption events. and she was very, very engaged with our office and many of the community efforts that he we had. she was often seen in the community such as our movies and the coffee free movie nights where she would work with us and animal care control to share various animal with the community. and, so, again we're just so shocked by her passing and really want to wish her family all the best as they deal with thi

jennifer gray has that. good morning, jennifer. >> good morning to you guys. we are going to see a little bit of rain in texas. that's going to be the trouble spot as we go through memorial day. we could see the possibility of severe weather. we're talking about damaging winds, large hail, and even the possibility of an isolated tornado. that's going to stretch from del rio, san angelo all the way up to abilene. lubbock is also included in that. a lot of rain is headed your way. we've already had a lot, and we could see an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain rkrain, isolateds up to 5 inches. so we're talking about a lot of rain around san angelo and also on the outskirts of midland. let's talk about good news, because the northeast, after the winter we've had, you deserve a good holiday weekend. temperatures are going to be in the 80s across most of the northeast. a lot of folks will be heading to the beaches. 88 in washington, d.c. that is mighty toasty. we're going to see temperatures starting out at 70 in new york. and as we go through the afternoon, temperatu

jennifer gray keeping an eye on all this weather for us this morning. jennifer? >> we're going to see the focus move more toward the mississippi river valley. we've had a lot of severe weather in the plains, now spotty showers and storms will move a little farther to the east. we'll even see scattered activity on the east coast. still a very high fire threat in the southwest, southern california. we are going to see high pressure stay in control in the pacific northwest. huge contrast in temperatures, though. 82 degrees in memphis, 87 in atlanta, 91 degrees in d.c. staying warm in los angeles, but it is only going to get warmer as we go forward in time. the fire threat will remain very high again tomorrow with very hot temperatures. we'll also see severe storms start to pick back up again right around the mississippi river valley, anywhere from mississippi, alabama, all the way up to kentucky with scattered showers across the eastern seaboard. look at the temperatures, though, tomorrow in l.a., as we go through tomorrow afternoon, 94 degrees. that fire threat wil

jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon with the latest. hi, jennifer. >> reporter: hi, arthel. it was a very emotional scene, i'm told, on the helicopter when this special operations forces placed bowe bergdahl on the aircraft. it was about 10:30 a.m. eastern time, according to a senior u.s. defense official, bergdahl was a bit disoriented and confused. he took a pen and wrote on a paper plate, writing instead of talking, because it was so loud on board the helicopter. sf, he wrote, meaning special forces. the operator sitting with bergdahl responded loudly over the noise of the rotor blade saying, yes, we have been looking for you for a long time. bergdahl then reportedly broke down crying. according to senior u.s. defense sources, bergdahl was in a weakened state, had lost some weight. but he could walk on his own. he was held by the haqqani faction of the taliban for four years and ten months, believed largely to have been in pakistan, most of that time. he was a sergeant first class. it was in the first months of his first tour to afghanistan that he was taken. the presiden

jennifer? >> john and christine, severe weather has moved across the country for sunday and also saturday. today looks like we're going to see another round of possible severe weather. showers and storms setting up right around the country's heartland. we're going to look at 10:00 on monday, a little bit later today. then as that will progress to the east, we could see showers and storms firing up as we go through the afternoon. also, texas could see quite a bit of rain in the next day or two, so we'll be on the lookout for that as well. rainfall totals could be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. right outside of dallas, we could see 4 to 6 inches on the north side of chicago, 1 to 3 outside of the city, and memphis could see quite a bit of rain as well. so, a lot of rain across the country, possible severe weather. you'll be in the severe weather threat if you are in, say chicago all the way down to portions of missouri and even southwest texas in that severe threat for today as well. look at these

our jennifer gray is watching this. so jennifer, bring us up to date. >> very, very powerful storm. large tornado on the ground right around beaver crossing. this tornado warning is going to be in effect for the next 30 minutes or so. most likely extended this storm, this very dangerous storm is rolling parallel pretty much to i-80, beaver crossing, milford, denton, nebraska needs to be on the lookout. if this storm holds together could be on top of you within the hour or so. confirmed tornado on the ground. could be a very large tornado. you need to immediately get into your safe spot, small interior room, no windows, lowest level of your house. milford, denton, lincoln state off i-80. this is a very powerful storm. you can see the greens and reds right next to each other right near beaver crossing, that's an indication of just where this tornado is. that's an area of circulation. this is all part of this larger system. severe thunderstorm warnings all across of the country's midsection just to the west of kansas city. if these hold together they'll be in your neck of the woods in
