how does wagering on the kentucky derby impacted the commonwealth of kentucky? are there tangible economic benefits to a one-day flood of cash? >> absolutely. the derby is big business. impact in a recent study was over $200 million every year just in the three weeks around the kentucky derby. it makes a major impact in this market. it is fair to say that louisville lives and dies with how successful the kentucky derby is every year. ceo of theident and national thoroughbred racing association. he's joining us on the phone from churchill downs. disturbing story in today's new york times that involves allegations of animal cruelty by trainers. he is said to be under state and federal investigation. what do you and your organization need to do to assure the public that the horses are being taken care of and being treated humanely? >> i certainly can comment on the investigations that are ongoing. industry has had enough programs in place. we have an integrity alliance that we have built to create standards for the industry to make sure we're doing everything possi

it is 140th running of the kentucky derby. of course, the big race gets started about 6:24 this afternoon. the horses going behind me, there is something to be said being here at churchill downs this early in the morning. there is a calmness that settles over the place as the horses start to get warmed up. it is really going to be a perfect day for the derby today. ideal weather conditions. we're looking at partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the lower 70s. low humidity. it is going to be about as perfect as you can get. big improvement from last year when the rain was coming down through most of the race. we're looking at 70 to 75 degrees. the track will be dry, too. so that might really affect who you're going to be betting on today. it is going to be a nice dry track. now where it's not dry, down in florida. that's where we still have some flooding concerns and more rain and thunderstorms are expected. we could see up to two inches of rain in some of those heavier downpours. so that's an area we'll have to keep an eye on t

that's older than anyone that's ever trained a kentucky derby winner. his two owners are outsiders in the world of big-time horse racing. not long ago they turned down an offer of $6 million for their horse. so if you're into a good cinderella story, saturday's kentucky derby had one for you. even if horse racing isn't your thing, you can always go to the derby just for the booze, i guess. if you care about politics, there was an additional reason to be paying close attention at saturday's kentucky derby.
