our meteorologist kevin corriveau is here with more. kevin. >> david, this is one of the places where you really don't want to see this because it is so remote, so high in the mountains and believe it or not just last week, with there was a situation where 180 people were found dead. as well as all the snow melt that is going on so we're talking about this area here, tajikistan to the north, pakistan. , very mountainous. this is the area of afghanistan with pakistan pakista pakistan e east. when it does get wet it doesn't hold the water very well, across that region. i want to go a little bit close nein with google earth. very, very dry, very steep areas in this area. unfortunately most of the roads going into this region are considered secondary roads and not really capable of handling the type of machinery that they need to get in. and as david said we're talking about in some of the areas mud is anywhere from 30 to 90 feet thick. unfortunately david we're going to be seeing in this area over the next couple of days, i looked over the

kevin corriveau is here with the weather kevin. >> storms moving through and not over yet. in nebraska specifically we've seen 17th tornadoes that's the preliminary count but all in all we have seen about 26 tornadoes moving across the area. you can see here just to the west of omaha right there, they did have some tornado warnings in effect. that has ended. now we're going to be watching that area here, we watch this very carefully for event of any more severe weather. we do have tornado warnings in effect for parts of iowa where that bow was, over the next several hours, it's not over yet. we will see this continue, we may be getting to 30, 32 tornadoes before the evening is through. kansas city, oklahoma, more of a severe threat, hail lightning dangerous winds as well. i'm going to take you to tomorrow, we are going to see some severe weather, edging to parts of wisconsin, all the way down to arkansas. shouldn't be like anything we saw today, but if you are traveling it could be risky on the roads. here towards the south, even though we've had snow up here towards the no

kevin corriveau with the latest. >>> it's been messy across the united states. all the problems we have, i'll get to that in a moment. first to the north-east where we began, we saw a band of showers pushing through, causing rain. then we have secondary showers, which were much more severe, take a look at video coming out of new york. they reported up to an inch or a little more in some locations, causing a bit of damages across the region. we are talking about mary lpd, delaware, new jersey, and at the airport we saw delays between 2.5 hours and 3.5 hours, and they are going on. i look at the f.a.a. website. things are improving for the north-east. we are seeing most of the rain pushing out. flooding is a problem. across the south, parts of norfolk virginia saw hectic weather. that has moved out. look at kentucky, there we saw wind damn, look at the video. trees down, power lines down, structural damage, and it's been wet around the area. the trees going down easily this time of year because the ground is wet. we'll see a little more activity through the rest o

. >> kevin corriveau is telling us what's killing the fish kevin. >> we don't think it's so much of a mystery anymore. last week when we had the heat wave going on across much of the area, historical temperatures. here is marina del rey. because of the temperatures we saw last week, this water temperature here really started to spike. because of that the algae was out of control in that area, depleating the water of oxygen. the fish had no oxygen and there was fish kill there. 101° on wednesday and thursday. back to normal now on monday but this is what the water temperatures did all the way up to today. you can see every single day went up a degree, some days two degrees. only 5° difference. now the good news is the water temperatures are going to go down because we are going obe seeing that in and -- to be seeing that in and out of the sea tides. the problem though still a lot of fish. take a look at the cleeup that's going on -- cleanup that's going on in the area right now. it's going to take quite a while for fish to be cleaned up. and john they're saying a foot of dead fish ar

our meteorologist kevin corriveau is here with more on that story. kevin. >> john, it wasn't planned at all. i want to take you back about 24 hours. let's put this in motion, you can see the rain that was it through. much clearer now. digging into what the terrain would look like. colburn, denver about 200 miles to the east. the small town of are 700 people was about five miles over here towards the west. this is the area we're talking about. you notice this half moon type shape right there. as you stay a look a little bit closer on google earth you can see a few roads into this area and one main highway just there to the north. now here is an image that was taken after the mountain slipped. let me go over here towards the other area. you can see where the mountain slipped right here and then you can see the debris flow all the way down towards the main road. actually it was so powerful it actually pushed over another ridge. that's the force we're talking about. about 250 feet deep in some of these locations there. luckily not many people were killed

kevin corriveau is here with the weather. >> over the last couple of days we've seen a lot of storms going through, a lot of rain. it is springtime and unfortunately northern afghanistan has one of the most diverse climates. in the summertime temperatures are in very dry, into the 90s sometimes triple digit. in the winters we get quite a bit of snow across this region. mountainous conditions here, this is where the highest peaks are in afghanistan. between 20 and 24,000 feet high. in the winter time we see quite a bit of snow in this area and then what happens as we get into spring you get rain and the melting from the snow pack. what's happened is we have flooding as well. last week we saw about 180 people killed because of severe flooding that went on in this particular area. i want to show you a little bit closer in on what it's actually like when you get down towards the low level geography in this area. it's very arid so when it does rain there's really no vegetation to hold any of this moisture in. and when you see when it does rain, the rain fawls falls withn these ravines. th

i'm meteorologist, kevin corriveau, we were talking about the wildfire danger going on across oklahoma. we're talking about temperatures into the low 90s. earlier we saw them up in to the high 90s. and temperatures are going to go up as we go towards the next couple of days. not just the temperatures but it is of course the wind, gusts right now are reaching 28 to 30 miles per hour, and tomorrow they expect those to be about 35 possibly up to 40 miles per hour. they are also pushing up from the south bringing that drier air into play. we have a lot of red flag warnings in the area. that means the fire is elevated. oklahoma, texas, parts of new mexico together. wichita 102, oklahoma city reaching to about 100 degrees, and it is going to continue as we go towards wednesday, a little bit of a break in the temperatures. but what is setting up is the development of severe weather on thursday. that means tornado and hail are likely. your news is coming up after this. >>> happy cinco de mayo. the 5th of may commemorates the mexican army's victory over france. people paraded through the street

corriveau is here with more on what that means? >> it's good for technology. there's a new satellite, launched in 2010. what it found out is, yes, we are losing doubt the amount of ice. this is not just the ice sheet we talked about last week where we think it's losing support, this is the area. this is what the satellite looks like. it has two antennas on it and find a change in altitude of the ice and the snow across the area. what we are concerned about is not so much the east. it is losing ice as well. it's over to the west. that's where we are seeing the majority of the ice we are losing in this area from the pennsylvania down to an area including the ice sheet we talked about. west antarctic losing a majority of it. 164 out of many tonnes is coming from the area. one glacier is losing 29 feet per year. what does it mean? in a 10 year average sea level will go up a fifth of an inch. it doesn't seem like a lot. after a decade, we'll see problems. we are talking about super storm sandy as well as tif oops in the pacific -- typho

kevin corriveau is following the weather and has more. >> in colorado active weather and high river valley - to that in a moment. here and colorado, nine tornados with this storm. the severe weather has diminished this evening. this is what we are looking at. thunder storms looking at the north-east sector. we saw in parts of colorado springs as well as in denver three inches of hail falling across the region, we expect thunder storms tonight. what we expect to see in the short term is what is happening here and the ohio river valley. earlier today we saw soft-ball sized hail falling in illinois. 100 reports of hail damage had been reported. we think we'll see more pushing down to kentucky, maybe to parts of tennessee, a little later. even west virginia could be seeing problems, and storms into parts of northern iowa, coming off the great lakes. this is a problem. tomorrow the weather threat will be a major problem as we look no parts of cannes assist and nebraska. we don't think it will be as big as it was today. it's warm and humid across the area. >> an incredible story out of californi

kevin corriveau joins us with more about the heavy rain and storms sweeping the area. >> that's right. things are not getting better over the next couple of days. i'll give you the forecast in a moment. i'll take you back to houston. earlier today, highway 45 going north. it was closed because of rain in the area. the same system was responsible for the severe where in western texas. it's moving to the east. we'll see the same type of weather pattern continuing for the next several days. we have warnings in effect. mississippi, and louisiana, concerning floodings. a big problem here. >> i want to show you pictures that came out across southern louisiana. there we go. people - really, the water came to quickly for some people. some locations saw 10 inches in one day. and many communities are flooded and will stay flooded for the next several days. i want to show you more video crass the region. a lot of people flooded in the streets, homes are flooded in the areas, sewers not being able to handle this much water in little time across the area. coming back to the weather wall, i'll show

kevin corriveau is here with the latest on the conditions. >> there's not a lack of weather. we'll deal with a tornado, they have started to develop across parts of nebraska and iowa. we have seen seven preliminary reports come out of the region. notice how quickly they develop, and are moving quickly towards the east. with this, not only the tornados , but the gusts, they are strong. we'll see a lot of damage. in terms of warnings there's a few to talk about. i'll focus on kansas, oklahoma, nebraska. bright red - tornado warnings, when they see tornadic activity on the ground or expecting to develop quickly. tornado watches for the area. more towards the west. there it is in the blue. this is what it was looking like across boulder colorado. they have been seeing a lot of snow, unseasonal snow across the area. we don't think it will feature the agriculture. temperatures - denver 35, shian 30. these temperatures are expected to come up over the next day. there are warnings in place. to the south, red flag warnings meaning a chance of fire is on the increase. let's tick a look

kevin corriveau is here with more. >> that's right. this is a picture from google othered of what it looked like before the slide. shaped like a bull. this area over here, this is the area that collapsed, the debris pushing more down into the open area. only three people died in this. they are looking at what caused this. here is the up to here, the area that was affected was just towards the east there. they are now looking at what is called the grand messa, receiving a lot of rain. they tink it caused and had app effect of what happened here to the north. afghanistan occurred this month. 300, 500 dead. india, 570 people. china, 1287 people are casualties there. across north dakota, a tornado pushed through. let's take a look on the satellite image. what happened was one system pushed through. this is what it looked like from the trailer park of the city. these men, who are workers in the up to, living it up, living in trailers supplied by the mining company. this is what they caught on tape. they did not leave, but it's interesting a

kevin corriveau has been tracking all of it and joins us with more. >> it's been an active day anywhere from the north to texas. we'll take you closer to texas and show you the rain that has been going on. in some places of dallas, they saw two inches of rain in a 45 minute period. if you go closer, you see rain showers pushing through another band. look at the video of strong wind and rain pushing through the area much the winds brought down power lines, damaging to some of the houses. there was a lot of roof damage going on across the area. things cleared up, but left a mess. the airport saw delays in cancellations as well. there was a dramatic rescue that took place in parts of dallas. five boys decided to skip school, go to the creek and the apart started to rise. all five were rescued. this boy was taken to the hospital. it took two hours to rescue them from a local creek in the area. coming back to the weather wall. this is what we expect to see as we go through the rest of the evening. we have flash flood warns in effect for the dallas area. the yellow that you see are severe thu
