big night last night in nebraska for the president of midland university, ben sasse. he got more primary votes for the u.s. senate seats than both his rivals combined. the sasse camp is out with a memo that says they give great credit and substantial credit to the out of state super pacs who backed him for the win but the lesson really is about recruiting quality candidates. the sasse is making the case that they need constitutional conservatives who can inspire the tea party but also have background in politics that is credible. sasse pleases both the gop establishment and tea partieriers and the super pacs on both sides of that battle. listen. >> that you want solutions, not sound bites and you want bigger ideas to tackle the big problems that we face. you told us that you still believe in the nebraska way and american creed because it wasn't just the hope and promise of yesterday but it's the hope and promise of our kids for tomorrow. you also told us that you wanted to turn the minority leader into the majority leader, and that it's time to fire harry reid. >> and

people in nebraska actually don't want the pipeline. would you imagine a state like nebraska would be empathetic or sympathetic to drilling for oil. but there are so many safety issues in terms of pollution that people are just getting uproared about. what happens then if that pipeline leaks as they all do. we know that they all do. then it completely pollutes the local water source there. who is going to clean that up? who is responsible for that? >> if it tends to leak on your land, then you also have no rights. it is interesting. it is a bipartisan issue. have you a number of democratic senators calling for this. senator landrieu. right? some suggesting that it is jobs. senator landrieu calling for a vote next week. but what's sort of interesting is, i guess what they're saying is we want to go around the president and say, yes, you can build this pipeline, we'll just stop in nebraska until the nebraska case is worked out -- i mean that seems a little bit of election year politics. >> of course it is, karen! i mean, come on! but let'

we have a couple of fascinating races in nebraska where polls closed a few minutes ago. in the republican primary for senate, this has been closely watched. the local tea party favorite is shane osborn, former state treasurer. he got the nod in part before tea party groups. his name is ben sasse. he's the university president. last time republicans got themselves into this kind of tangle a long shot candidate, a third candidate, a dark horse named deb fischer ended up winning a senate seat almost by stent after the early front runners picked each other off in 2012. this year the stand-off between shane osborn and ben sasse may have opened the way for a self-funded candidate named sid dinsdale. republicans will be watching closely. so will we as results continue to come in. we have about 3% in. also they have a republican primary for governor. nebraska will be replacing four-term republican governor dave heinman who has endorsed jon bruning to with be his replacement. he's the attorney general. pete ricketts is the son of the wealthy owner of the chicago cubs, joe rickett
