. >> let's bring in meteorologist nicole mitchell. good morning. >> good morning, we were just looking at north dakota and what you see is severe risk shifting a little more to the north as we get later into spring because of the temperature gradient that we see and that shift shifting north object as well. this is the area we were just talking about, not only that tornado that you just saw, but also areas of high wind, damaging hail. farther south, all the spots along the midwest were spots of the severe weather. we also have this potent area through the south. it has already produced also some areas of severe weather, including some isolated reports of tornadoes in texas and this is now our bigger risk for today, that slight risk area being highlighted in red. you can also see on this forecast for the rest of the day, heavy areas of rain expected, and that's going to be another problem for us. in fact, i think some of that potential for flooding might be more widespread than the severe weather in terms of wind, hail and that chance

. >> let's go straight to huge nicole mitchell now for more on the conditions they're facing. good morning. >> good morning. we saw in the video one official talking about rain in the forecast. i think that's overly optimistic. it's wednesday or thursday we start to see that with the risk of severe weather. it's still a dangerous condition. you can see through the south a lot of 80's, but this core of the brighter reds are more 90's into oklahoma and texas today, so definitely a dividing line. you get north of this, it's cooler. on the southern side of this line, temperatures are 10-20 degrees above average. what does that mean for the forecast? we did have forecast yesterday top that triple digit mark, as far north at kansas. oklahoma city, lubbock, right on that 100-degree mark today. it's not just the high temperatures, warm temperatures dry everything out and humidities are low. the wind is gusting in the teens already, expected 20-30 miles per hour later today. we have widespread areas all through the southwest under different fire dangers. back to you. >> thank you. >> u

nicole mitchell is back. i'm gladly i didn't take out the air conditioning yet. >> i've been play that go game trying not to use it, i try to hold off as long as i could. it panned out for those in the northeast, if you just wait add couple days past that, the heat has cooled down. you need it in the south, 60's and 70's this morning and a sticky and wet day with all that rain today. cities such as washington, d.c., all right dropping about 15 degrees from yesterday at this time. instead of 70's, we've got 50's this morning. it's going to be the rest of the day you feel changes. for the northeast, 60's have gone well southward. in the meantime, minneapolis 83 degrees. that's the core of the warm right now. just to give you a contrast. i mentioned d.c., chance of rain for that same cold front that has come through, yesterday temperatures ranging from mid 80 said to 90's, today at 60. to me, that's more comfortable than the hot, humid sticky stuff but means you need a rain jacket or sweater as you head out. oth

. >> for more, lets bring in nicole mitchell. what's going on? >> it's been spotty where we've seen all of that weather. people in the auto body shop love the hail. across the country, we have a boundary lane through the central portion of the united states and along that line we've seen the severe weather. it's had good sides. i'll get to that. >> in terms of the risk, biggest in the southeast right along to mexico-texas area. anywhere i have highlighted in green are areas we could get thunderstorms, which is the yellow as a slightly higher chance of severe weather. here's how all this shapes up, spotty into the northeast today, winds down tomorrow. we keep this moisture. we have the boundary that comes through the central u.s. and low pressure pulling out of the southwest, rain relief we said possibly for arizona and fire areas. this centers over texas over the next couple of days. it's not just today, it's a couple days of moisture that we could see in this region of the country, and then a little bit spottier as we get into that northwest reg

let's turn to our meteorologist nicole mitchell for the details. good morning. >> good morning. over the next couple days, we'll see slight improvements in humidity, not quite as hot for the central plains, so little bits of relief. you can also see we're getting more unstable getting into the central portion of the united states, already showers on the northern side of all of this. with that instability, we could see some of that on the southern tier, as well. more moisture is toward the north, so you're getting that this morning in places like montana, higher elevations not out of the question that that would be a couple of snowflakes going by. the southern plains, you can see a fair amount of sunshine this morning. we are going to see moisture move in. still a high fire risk. ninety's surging even farther to the north, iowa seeing 90's today, definitely parts of nebraska. winds are gusting, more so in the afternoons, in the teens and 20's this morning and that combined with the low humidity is now giving us fire danger extending into parts of nebraska and through the central

for more, we turn to nicole mitchell. dry is the understatement. >> much like california, that south central portion of the united states, extreme drought conditions, so that combined with the extreme heat we've been seeing recently is a tinder box. it was supposed to be a controlled burn, but there were a number of fires across the region, this one in oklahoma. conditions add to that. you get heat like again today, we could be setting more records, more temperaturion in the hundreds. that dries out vegetation, and then on top of it, temperatures in the 90s, significant for may. no real moisture across the region until closer to the gulf coast to pick up humidity, but that's not helping in this region. then we've had the winds really kicking up. right now in the 10-15-mile per hour range. once we get into the heat of the day, that exacerbates the situation, wind sends gusts more, so gusting 20-30-mile per hour, whipping this this along. the heat, low humidities and wind means more fire danger today. this area extends to p

. >> let's bring in meteorologist nicole mitchell. good monday morning. >> good monday morning to you. i hope everyone's having a good one out there. as the pattern shifted with the latest system, so has the risk of dire danger. you can see on the radar it's the northern tier of the country with the chances for rain, the southern tier pretty dry. we've had changes out here. we were talking about california being so hot, finally with the front going through, two things happened, it shifted the wind from out of the southwest, which was that dry santa ana wind, temperatures have dropped 20-30 degrees from just a couple of days ago. with that, this is one of our drought areas, the deeper the reds, the more drought. you can see other our significant area, texas, oklahoma, some of these regions. that's how the flow has shifted. i mentioned the cooler air as we get to california, ahead of this system, now that warm surge and those winds out of the south that are really warming everything up is more into the desert southwest and starting to p

let's bring in meteorologist nicole mitchell for more details. >> we need any help we can get at this point in time. in the fire areas we've had, even a little cooling in the temperatures is going to make a big difference for us. the east coast has been very wet and we would love to see some of that rain on the west coast, you can see more clouds approaching. we do have a front that is going to approach. it looks like for parts of california staying dry, but even the front bringing in cooler temperatures and switching that wind pattern that's been causing us problems. that is going to be some relief. today, you can see dry. it looks like that forecast staying dry for the next couple days. temperatures reducing slightly. you can see los angeles close to 100 a little more into the 90's. it starts today and improves more tomorrow. we still have fire dangers up through this evening as the conditions slowly improve, but today is still going to be a rough day. ninety's going into the 70's, a lot of places by the time we get to next week dropped 20-30 degrees. that's good news. what is not g

. >> let's check in with nicole mitchell for more now on that video. nicole. >> definitely severe weather, as you mentioned. this was right along the nebraska and colorado border. this is a time lapse. this is a super cell, a larger complex that can produce a number of thunderstorms and severe ones at that. a sustained updraft and sometimes these storms are producers because of that updraft and you can see the heavy rain coming out of it, the lightning, but also that updraft producing possible hail and tornadoes at times. now i want to get back to we were just talking moore out there and the tornado last year. that is a city in that part of the country, quiet today, different problems with fire potential, but a big tornado outbreak, i was actually a meteorologist there in 2003 during that outbreak that hit moore and 1999, another one, so this is a community that has sustained numerous hits even in recent years, as we get to the money focus, it is the northern tier of the country that has a little better chance for strong storms, the low pressure moving

let's turn to nicole mitchell, it has been a mess up and down the east coast because of all of these storms. >> absolutely. we were looking alter da. the street view is pretty clear looking at her. this is looking down and you can see how much the mist, we've got a quarter mile visibility if you're going horizontally, but verily the ceilings, the low level of the clouds in the base of the clouds only 200 feet behalf the surface. you get farther up, harder to see because of the mist. imagine bang pilot trying to land, it's an instrument day and the planes have to be spaced farther outer. it takes a lot more time to get those planes in and out. usually when we're seeing delays this early in the morning, laguardia already coming in with two hours posted especially trying to arrive. it's going to be slower getting in trying to land. other places that i think will come up pretty quick on that list, new york, philadelphia, j.f.k. and possibly d.c. airports, as well, also impacted by the general slowness across the east coast. watch for that today. it's going to be one of our problem spots.

nicole mitchell joins us now with that. >> good morning, and while some areas have improvement, other parts of the country are going downhill with the weather. you can see the bands of rain in the northeast. and in finishing, because if you are trying to catch a flight out this afternoon, but we'll watch for more problems on the rise instead. and already widespread areas of rain on the backside of t such an enormous temperature contrast. we have seen areas of know in nebraska. look at this. rapid city to omaha, 37 verse 72 as the temperature right now, so each 100-miles you go, the temperature is dropping 10° as you go westward. that is a strong cold front. that's coming through the country, and ahead of that, the temperatures, a lot of them in the 80s, and that will help to fuel the severe weather through the course of the day. anywhere we're watching, anywhere in the yellow, that's a slight risk. and the red is moderate. this is pretty far north. and i told you how far north it has gotten, to have that severe of a risk. south of all of this, it's still in the slight risk area for s

. >> for more on the conditions that are fueling these wildfires, we turn now to nicole mitchell. >> it's going to be at least until tomorrow before we start to get relief as we get into the weekend. it's been quite the contrast through the country, flooding concerns the eastern half and extreme drought and high fire conditions especially so early in the season as we get anywhere into the southwest, arizona as well has been seeing hot and dry conditions. as we go forward over the next couple of days, i did the little full science lesson last hour, but the short version is as winds come down over the santa ana mountains, they warm up, so as this happens, we're getting very hot air, temperatures in the 90's and 100's, that also dries the vegetation out. it's coming from a dryer region, so the air is dry to begin with, but the heat dries the vegetation out and funneling winds, a lot of places under those fire risks or high wind risks, temperatures in the 100's, including pole los angeles and more of the same tomorrow before some of these return into the 70's for the weekend. that will h
