"today in the bay" peggy bunker just got to the scene. peggy, what can you tell us? >> good morning to both of you. the last time we chatted with you at san jose's 16th homicide and now we're at the city's 17th homicide. you can see the police activity here. we did talk to one of the san jose sergeants who said they were here all night long processing the scene and some activity tape over here. we'll show you earlier that they had around this house where they were trying to get some questions answered, but right now they're saying they don't have a lot of answers to this question. who was this adult male that was shot last night. was taken to the hospital by an acquaintance and later died at the hospital. no suspects right now that they can give us more information about. they are still actively processing this situation. they've been here, once again, all night long. homicide is now involved as they try to get to the bottom of this situation. lots of questions left to be answered. they're still looking for what went down. the bigger question for, the elementary scho

peggy bunker joins us now and, peggy, it sounds like there are two sides to this story. >> details are still emerging, laura. we are hearing from this woman who is 25 years old and telling a harrowing telling about being drugged and kidnapped when she was 15 years old. two sides of this story are definitely emerging. some neighbors say they didn't think that anything was wrong. the victim has named garcia, now 41 years old as her abductor. garcia was arrested on tuesday and being held on $1 million bail. he's accused of false imprisonment and kidnap for rape. the victim said that she endured physical, mental and emotional assault for ten years. being forced to marry garcia and have a child with him. her family completely stopped looking for her and be deported to mexico if she left him. however, some neighbors said they never noticed anything was wrong. >> every weekend they would go out and do what a family would do. >> she could have drove to the police station and say, i don't feel safe. >> other neighbors, though, they say they thought the alleged victim was in distress. she knew s

peggy bunker joins us in the studio with new developments. peggy? >> this is a country just being torn apart at the scene. certain cities and villages wanting to join russia and other steadfastly fighting for an independent ukraine. a conflict many are holding -- another ukrainian helicopter was shut down today. the third attack in less than a week. four ukrainian soldiers and now 30 pro-russian separatists were killed yesterday. now over 2,000 people also stormed a military office and the country continues to divide over the conflict. it is now spreading south into the city of odesa. in a possible attempt to keep proseparatists the city has now been closed to arriving and departing flights. the conflict did bring together, however, the russian foreign minister and ukraine's foreign minister as they sat down at a meeting to address ukraine. the increase in conflict was russia's attempt to disrupt the upcoming ukrainian elections. >> russia is clearly intent on disrupting or preventing those elections and i believe that is the strategy of russia at t

"today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us with the latest developments. >> this video just into our newsroom within the past 15 minutes and under way showing the fight between ukrainians and pro-russian forces continues to escalate. the latest village to be affected is this one we just saw. you can see ukrainian troops here facing off with the villagers in the eastern region of ukraine. helicopters landing in nearby field while those tanks were surrounded by angry and fearful villagers. armed soldiers lined up alongside the road to retake this part of ukraine from pro-russian separatists. a third pilot, as you see here had to make an emergency landing after being gravely injured. this is reportedly him being removed from the wreckage and this is from a russian television station and they're rotting the pilot is now being held hosage. all this to fall from ukrainian territory into a russian one. setting up road blocks in their attempt to hold prorussian separatists back. >>> this situationen ukraine will come to a head as president obama meets with german chancellor angela merkel to discuss t

peggy bunker here with this story. this girl apparently escape would the use of facebook. >> that is a wonderful thing. that's how she got out of this situation. this shocking case. now 41 years old accused of kidnapping his then girlfriend's teenage daughter and keeping her captive for ten years and forced her into marriage. garcia arrested on tuesday and being held on $1 million bail. accused of false imprisonment and a lewd act with a minor and kidnap for rape. the victim who has not been identified said she was drugged by him ten years ago after which she was kidnapped and held captive in a garage. the girl reported that she lost all hope after garcia told her that her family stopped looking for her and that she'd be deported to mexico if she left him. here's a timeline of this ten-year ordeal. started in 2004 and then 15 years old when she was kidnapped from santa ana by garcia and drove her to a home in compton where he assaulted her reportedly. he forced the girl to marry him using false documents to hide their

peggy bunker joining us now. it is hard to believe but the video really shows it all. >> no denying exactly what happened here. this attack happened at oakland high school about two yeweeks a, reportedly after a student in a wheelchair was lingering in the hallway too long. he had cerebral palsy. he and a partner were rushing late students to class and then this, this altercation and he whales on the student right there three to four times and pushes him there out of his chair and dumps him on the floor. the other security guard actually had to step in and restrain his partner. reportedly when the guards started pushing martinez in his chair towards class, martinez laughed at the officers and in response he handcuffed the student and continued to roll him to class the boy spat at the officer and that's when he threw those punches. the principal sent out a letter to parent and staff explaining the incident and also apologizing. the letter reads in part, i'm shocked and deeply hurt by this behavior and i apologize

peggy bunker joins us now with the very latest. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott. this is not the news you want to hear, but this is what we are learning eight more girls have been kidnapped from the region of northeast by gunman that are responsible for kidnapping 200 to 300 other school girls that have been gone now for more than three weeks. the news is coming to us from nigerian where the eight girls were reportedly taken. now, this is happening after yesterday's threat by the leader who said that he would "sell the girls" s into a life of slaver" secretary of state said he would do anything to bring the nigerian girls. the eight additional girls that we are learning about in the past ten minutes and being that this is a story that caught fire internationally, including some outrage that you see here that it took three full weeks for the world to start reacting to the fact that these young girls have gone missing and that gave the leaders to continue to grab the international stage which is what they have right now and especially with the new details that eight

"today in the bay" peggy bunker is here with the proposed changes. >> pot shots are netting hefty tax dollars for santa clara county. with the presence of pot shops comes a whole host of other issues. local schools have doubled since 2011 and today the city council will discuss a clamping down on those dispensaries. first came on the scene in 1996 after state law allowed eed medicinal use of the drug. told police to focus on significant drug trafficking rather than marijuana. the pot shops flourished. 80 shops operate within san jose city limits and they are the exception. every city in santa clara county has banned them. san jose does not want to ban the shops noting they bring in $5.6 million in business tax revenues. heefrz here's what they're proposi proposing. also pot must be grown on site and there needs to be a 1,000-foot buffer between the shops and dicare schools, parks, library and churches. they also need to be 500 feet from drug rehabs and also homes. council members say the proposed changes would actually protect the right to buy marijuana rather than banning it outright

"today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us now. it is hard to believe, but the video shows it all. >> you can't deny it. all being captured on video and now just surfacing after the may 19th attack. the security guard that is hired to protect the students at the school would then attack one of the kids he is supposed to be keeping safe. it is shocking and reportedly all started after a student in a wheelchair was lingering too long in the hallway. now, look at this video and you see the security guard in the white shirt mar shell mitchell rolling martinez down the hallway and this altercation afterwards punches are thrown right there. one, two, three, possibly four hits there. he dumps martinez on the floor. the other security guard had to step in to restrain his partner. reportedly when mitchell started pushing mitchell, martinez slapped at the guard and he didn't want to be rolled down the hallway. mitchell took out his handcuffs and cuffed the student. the boy spat at the security guard and that's when mitchell started throwing

peggy bunker joins us with the latest, including what vladimir putin is saying this morning. >> more violent fighting broke out in the town in eastern ukraine and reportedly two ukrainian helicopters were shot down by pro-russian insurgents and the images we're seeing show a war-torn ukraine. this is from a russian television station and it reportedly shows an injured helicopter pilot being removed from the wreckage. we have confirmed that one of the helicopter pilots died and the other was reportedly injured and captured and now the violence centers around pro-russian separatists. it could be a replay of what has already happened falling into a russian territory. ukraine interior minister said they're staging a huge counter offensive and taking control of nine checkpoints despite fear fighting from prorussian forces. >>> meantime today at the white house the situation in ukraine will come to a head as the president meets with angela merkel to specifically discuss this conflict in ukraine. it is thought that the president will apply serious pressure to merkel to impose german sanctio

"today in the bay" nanette mirranda is live in pleasant view. >> i have an advance copy of president obama's speech. series of actions aimed at carbon pollution. here are some highlights. mr. obama wants to build up a solar work force, provide innovative financing for solar, invest in energy upgrades to federal buildings and improve appliance efficiency. the white house chose walmart to announce these actions because the giant retailer will commit to double the number of on-site solar projects at u.s. stores, sam's clubs and distribution centers by the year 2020. the president is also expected to highlight other major businesses that have made the similar commitments as walmart has, but mr. obama will be greeted by protesters, labor groups and some walmart employees don't understand why he chose the chain for this visit. they say

"today in the bay" peggy bunker joins us. all the performances canceled today. >> they initialsy started by canceling the rest of the performances on sunday and now they say all performances in providence, rhode island, will be canceled. this after nine circus performers were canceled while performing an act on the human chandelier, as it's called. they were performing on sunday in rhode island as part of the ringling brothers barnum & bailey circus. the whole thing was caught on camera. we want to warn you the video of the fall is tough to watch. right there it appears as if a single cable snapped dropping the eight women who were performing the hair hang on the chandelier. they fell between 35 and 40 feet the ground injuring a ninth person on the floor. it was packed with families and children witnessing the fall. they took a total of 11 people to the hospital. many of them performers with broken bones. one of the injured performers required immediate surgery. now, this morning the spokesperson for the circus is defending t

. >> and i'm peggy bunker. we have team coverage in place, covering this spring heat wave, beginning this morning with meteorologist christina loren. christina, this heat advisory is in place for most of the bay area, right? >> yeah, it actually starts at 1:00 p.m. and stays in effect, all the way until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, when we see an even hotter day shaping up. temperatures at this hour, i don't want to bury the lead by any means, but look at these numbers. 82 degrees currently. not even lunchtime just yet. in the south bay, we're at 81 for the peninsula, 82 in the east bay, and 71 in san francisco. we're on our way to the mid-90s for today and temperatures creep up even more so as we get into tomorrow, making this warmest spell we've had of the year so far. tomorrow, we'll trade in those mid-90s. up to 105 degrees in places like gilroy. thursday, it will be noticeably cooler at the coast. and into the end of the week, into the weekend, that's when that heat will break, but staying above average. we'll show

i'm laura garcia-cannon in for peggy bunker. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. let's get right the to meteorologist christina loren. she got to be outside in san jose, where apparently it's already well into the 80s. >> and what a treat it is, you guys. what a beautiful day. well, since you're not out there in it, you're likely in the ac of your home. but what you'll notice behind me, it is really hot out there. but i want to draw your attention to these increasing clouds coming from the pacific. that, there, is a sign of onshore flow starting to take shape. and that's what we need in order to get those cooler temperatures. let's go ahead and tell you where we are right now and where we're headed, as we head throughout the day. look at that, san jose, climbed up to 81 degrees. the warmest spot on the map is livermore at 83 degrees. mountain view's at 79 and 73 degrees, even in monterrey. so, today is the last hot day, and then temperatures tumble. we're going to drop like a rock. as of tomorrow, and then we fall even more so as we get into that all-important wee

time peggy bunker. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. this latest case or plate of poisoned meatballs was found in san francisco's sunset district. in the past year, meatballs have been left in the twin peaks and diamond heights neighborhood as well. nbc bay area's christie smith live in san francisco. christie, this is very troubling for dog owners. >> reporter: it is. good morning to you, scott. you know, that plate of meatballs was found right here among the bushes at 24th and ortega. of course, neighbors really upset about it for a number of reasons. this has happened before in other parts of the city. now, here. dogs used to pass and kids. and the woman who called police said the meatballs were stuffed with white pills. she took a picture of that plate and said one had about a small candle, about $1.50 in coins on it and of course the pieces of meat. this really odd discovery immediately raised a red flag because the woman who found it is a dog trainer herself. there are many dog walkers who use the path here where the tainted meat

i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we're going to begin with new details on the case of a bay area mother accused of attacking a student. she claims the boy bullied her daughter. this morning, the mother made her first court appearance. nbc bay area's christie smith live outside the courthouse in santa rosa. now, christie, the mother admits to confronting the boy, but she says she didn't touch him, right? >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly right. and the attorney for the mother told the court that he has evidence that would show that this boy probably made up the story about her going for his throat. he says that the mom did go to the school and told him to stop bullying the daughter, but did not touch him. 30-year-old delia garcia-bratcher arrived in court with her attorney and supporters by her side. it was a very brief court appearance. no charges filed. and her attorney told the court he would share that evidence, but didn't say exactly what it was. the 30-year-old is accused of going to her kid's school, olivet ele

i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we are learning new details about that fire in sunnyvale. two bodies have been found in a mobile home. we presume it's the bodies of the elderly couple who lived there. nbc bay area's christie smith is live at the cape cod village mobile home park with the latest. christie? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. this is a very small, tight-knit community. everyone here knows the each other. and i have to tell you, they are absolutely devastated this morning, looking at this scene here behind me. a huge fire at their neighbor's mobile home has claimed two lives. investigators do believe it's likely the elderly couple who has lived here for years, that couldn't make it out in time. cell phone video show just how intense this fire was. michael coul't believe the flames he was shooting. >> it was engulfed. it was bad. i don't understand how it was demolished so quick. the first thing i said, i hope nobody's in there. >> reporter: but there was. neighbors told firefighters right away tha

. >> and i'm peggy bunker. new details on a growing problem involving a san francisco company that has used travel visas to india. hundreds of people are frustrated because of a major delay in getting those travel documents. nbc bay area's christie smith is live at the indian consulate in san francisco. christie, the consulate is taking a pretty unusual step to diffuse this problem. >> yeah, they are. they've opened their doors to let people in. there are still long lines and some confusion about exactly where people should be, because there are two locations now. but here at the consulate in san francisco, we've seen a few people come out with really big smiles, approved for travel visas after waiting out here for days to get one. we talked with one woman who came out with a huge sense of relief. they don't normally process here. this, though, is an exception, after the consulate general in india in san francisco, they replaced a company with cox kings global services for travel documents. they did that on may

i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we begin with new details on a south bay vocational school that suddenly closed its doors. dozens of students showed up to bryman college in san jose hoping to go to class, but the doors are locked. nbc's bob redell is at the campus in san jose. bob, many students have said they've invested a lot of money and time in this. >> and at least one showing up today, completely surprised at what happened. i just spoke to the llc, the people that own this building, that had been renting their space to bryman college. the lawyer tells us that their client evicted bryman college because they owe around $80,000 in back rent, that they have been behind in rent for some time. you can see, there's the "no trespassing" sign and the doors are locked her. the lawyer tells us they filed an action with the court in early february, tells us the school did not respond, so an eviction date was set three times, once in march, april, and earlier this month. and each of those times, the property owner, accord
