low pressure is moving across the sierra nevada. it's cranking out some snow showers there but here likely to get the winds going especially into the afternoon. a little breezy this morning. some partly cloudy skies, mostly sunny this afternoon. but some very gusty winds late in the day. and much warmer weather as though winds calm down and actually turn offshore over the weekend. here's that low that's moving through california just to our east. that's going to be enough to help crank up these winds as high pressure builds in behind that. so a blustery day especially along the coastline. in the high country, guess what, they have another winter weather advisory up there. could see two inches of snow. they are requiring chains on highway 88 there and yeah, you might want to just pack the chains and be careful in that direction. as we look toward the afternoon you will see orange and red beginning to show up especially near the coastline and through some of the mountain gaps. those are some of those gusts possibly to 30 and 40 miles

we have a little bit of snow in the sierra nevada. thank you steve bridges up in the keys. .5 at lake level. and there was some 40s on the temperatures and a couple of showers, pleasant hill, martinez, clayton had some. a lot of dark clouds. other areas not a cloud at all. cool, clouds, sunny. these clouds are moving south of the of the area -- south of the area. temperatures still running below average. i will get out of the way so you can see this. right around concord, pleasant hill, martinez. there are a couple of showers even along highway 4 out to antioch a couple of reports, brentwood, oakley. most that stayed in the valley. it was close but it went from stockton, merced, san joaquin valley. they are getting some rain there, not a lot. but a little bit. 50s on the temperatures. really cool. it will be very cool tonight in wind protected areas. all of this is associated with a low-pressure system in the  sierra nevada. is it making a b-line toward the central sierra and then down to las vegas as it parks itself or sets up shop

in time, that will take care of most of the fog up in the sierra nevada. it looks like reno had some rain. it's about done. there's a little bit there. most of this is drifting east and south. there will be a little breeze today. it will turn more northerly later on as that low starts to head down to las vegas also southern california. maybe it will give them some much-needed rain. for us we're getting the drier air starting to work its way in on the north side of that low. 40 up in tahoe. 53 ukiah. 55 in monterey. the low heads to southern california, hangs out for a day and flies out to the east. that means temperatures will warm up. the low is on the way out. yesterday was our best day for rain. low clouds, sunny, breezy warmer. that warmer will carry us into sunday. not record highs or anything. but sunday looks to be the warmest day. next week, looks like another cooling trend. fog, sun, nice today. breezy for some. if you have the sun, you will be out of the gate pretty quick with these temperatures. some of that cloud deck will be stubborn for a whi

we have aerial images telling the story of a long dry woint in the sierra nevada mountains. this video was shot for al jazeera. we maffed a camera -- placed a camera on an aircraft used to take aerial shots of the snow pack. it's a joint project. they are trying, with the aerial measurements, is get accurate readings. they fly at 70,000 feet over the sierra nevada, and they can pinpoint the snow pack with precision. the snow pack is shallow, even at the highest elevations. >> after two sizeable years of droughts, the reservoirs are lower than they are normally at this time of year. so if we had a good year of snow pack, we'd fill that up, and there would be no problem. we have a lousy snow pack. we have not much to put into already a serious deficit. so many of those reservoirs will not full to their capacity this year. and as we head out into the dry summer months, then raging will become a reality. >>> california's department of water resources says the snow pack is at 4.3% of average, meaning the dry winter will make for a long parched summer in california. >> jennifer lo
