brett, you say america's in retreat, but is that the same thing as saying america is in decline? >> no, totally different things. look, russia is in decline with massive demographic problems jack. pan is probably in decline as well. europe is arguably in decline. the united states, if the historian 30 years from now looks back to the early innovations of the 21st century, they will talk about social media and fracking, the u.s. is in retreat. the decline is something that happens almost beyond the ability of ordinary politicians to reverse. retreat is a set of policy options. and over the last six years we've had a presidency that has very deliberately wanted to shrink america's footprint in every respect. military, strategic, economic, political, diplomatic, this is the lead from behind presidency. and that is the reason why we are now seeing russia and ukraine, the expansion of isis, iran on the cusp of a nuclear weapon. >> we just heard president obama's response to the jerusalem outrage are. you saying that is part of the retreat, which essentially president obama is leading?

john wrote a , series of small essays about america. america being born. and he is really one of the first guys to really write down what this thing is, this america that is being born. and one of his most famous observations is that here, individuals from all nations and races are melted into a new race of men, whose labors and posterity will one day was great -- cause great changes in the world. so he is saying america is destined for greatness, and one of the key factors is it has this melting pot effect. it is people and ideas and traditions and melting them into a new race of people. that is not a new idea. way back in the colonial period we had people thinking in these terms. but we also had people like benjamin franklin. as one ofmally cite the most open-minded people in america, in the world. we think of him as one of the great enlightened people, great science and literature and a great entrepreneur. but he is not above having that negative reaction to immigration as it is happening. in the mid-1700s, pennsylvania experienced a big influx in germa
