it is big and strawing but think about this. 40% of the population live in city of anchorage and its suburbs. 15% live in matsu valley. capital is wasilla. 15% live in fairbanks. 70% of the population live in two big cities and area between them. 11% live in the kenai peninsula, republican. 11%. "juno" and. and rural takes a long time to come in and seven days after the election until all ballots are collected. unless sullivan runs up a big margin in the urban center of the state, if you will, we may sit here on december 12th waiting for final ballots to come in and resolution of the race. jon: nate silver, noted prognosticator, 538.com, said in the senate calculus, iowa is the pivot point. do you agree? >> i think it is one of the important points. it is sort of become the harry reid helped make it the pivot point, if democrats hold iowa they hold the senate. joni ernst has done an exceptional job. these polls tended in the last month to show her not only with the lead but increasing and then in early vote, this is key test for me, the democrats traditionally run up a big advantage

john in anchorage, let me ask you about the race out there. nobody seems to have a good sense of how this stacks up right now. the assumption is just such a republican state in alaska, a good year for republicans so, therefore, begich is in trouble. we've seen a couple of polls in the last week that said, whoa, begich meet be doing a lot better than we realize. what do we need to know about the race? >> we're clueless, too. the thing about polling in alaska kind of similar to what the last person said, you can poll the same 50 people five minutes apart and they'll give you completely different results. both campaigns are really optimistic about their chances. in alaska as you said it's a really red state. republican registration we have about 500,000 registered voters. republicans outnumber democrats 2-1. but then again, the majority of all registered voters in alaska are independent, nonpartisan, undeclared. the hidden truth in that is that it's still about a 2-1 conservative majority. senator begich is very wildly optimistic about his ground

alaska it will be warmer in anchorage than in chicago by midweek as we head towards this air. rapid city, iowa, fahrenheit, 22 fahrenheit drops down to 12 fahrenheit. that is minus 10 celsius for a high tuesday into wednesday. notice a warming trend does return. places like chicago dropping from 60 down to 33. so once again, about 15 celsius down to zero or so celsius as we head towards the middle portion of the week. the impressive part is the amount of snow that will accumulate across the northern tier of the united states. could see as much as 40 centimeters about a foot of snow in the forecast, which would have major travel implications as we head in toward the middle portion of the week. that's the latest in weather.
