barry had a problem with drinking. the fact remains in that situation he would have had everybody on his side. he was the first for so many things. young african-american activists. i covered him when he was with pride. then he went to the school board. then to the council. wounded, seriously wounded during the uprising back in the late '70s. fearful he wouldn't pull through. de. then he became mayor, first second mayor of the city, first elected mayor, and he had several tumultuous terms. he would be everybody's hero one day, he could be somebody's villain the next day. but his series of accomplishments as an urban leader are stupendous. the downtown development we have today. a powerful city largely because of him. he had his demon, drink and drugs, women to a certain extent. there was the incident at the hotel. that was part of marion barry. you can't ignore them. there was so much there to talk about and so much politicmeaccot in the long run. >> what it boils down and what we're saying marion barry was a transform

but barry goldwater decided to go for the nomination for two reasons. number one, because young people like you all had come to him and said, you must run. you must raise the conservative standard. we have worked so hard for you these last couple of years. we want you to run, to be that conservative candidate. so he was responding to the call of young people and young conservatives all over america. there were issues that had to be discussed, that had not been discussed in american politics for 20, or, 40 years, things like limited government, the idea of victory over communism had not been discussed before the 1964 campaign. very goldwater decided that, as he said, i am going to lose, but i am going to lose it my way. that meant he was going to do it in a way in which he put forth principles, important issues, key issues which had not been discussed for. so whether he won or lost, and he knew he was going to lose, he felt he was going to win by raising those issues for the first time in a national campaign. >> mr. shirley, we always hear that after 196
