south buffalo. as i indicated, it is slow going still? south buffalo. we are making progress but there's a long way to go the driving ban is still in effect in south buffalo. we want people to continue to observe the driving ban. we've had situations where because it is bright and sunny people have driven in from other municipalities and gotten stuck fooled by the beautiful sunshine. there's tremendous amounts of snow on the ground in south buffalo. the limited state of emergency in south buffalo is still in w responding to ems calls and stranded motorists. nose vehicles are being managed by our fire department. i want to thank them for the tremendous work they are doing under difficult circumstances in responding to people that have emergency situations, particularly health emergencies. our health services has four crews helping to shovel out seniors in other parts of the city. not south buffalo. we still don't the ability to send crews into south buffalo to help with that kind of work. just a corr

buffalo was almost in the clear the entire day. here's buffalo and here are the south towns. that's where the snow came down. it was a warm lake, a cold wind and that cold wind brought the snow right onshore into buffalo in what we call the niagara frontier right here. here's the forecast for tomorrow and light snow. but for tomorrow this lake wind event just like we had the other day blows right along the lake and right back into buffalo and that's where the snow will come from. now, it's not going to be a 24-hour event. it will be a 10-hour event so there won't be as much snow and by tomorrow night it's all gone. but can you imagine, you think you've got yourself out of your house and then another 2 1/2 feet comes down. >> i also heard it might rain, which would not be a good thing. >> that would be a terrible thing. if it rains and it probably will at least on the weekend, all of that snow is not going to melt right away. that snow is going to hold that rain in and then that snow on top is going to get heavier and heavier and heavier and all of a sudden, like she was sayin

this especially south buffalo and in the areas south of buffalo. north buffalo is okay and north of buffalo and niagara falls and that area is okay and everything near lake erie is awful, right? >> you're absolutely right. back in 1977 we had a very intense blizzard. people in south buffalo who went through that blizzard are saying the snow now is more than they remember back then. >> i remember that snowfall and that was awful in 1977. are you satisfied, mayor with the emergency assistance from the state of new york and maybe even from the federal government? >> very satisfied. we've heard from every member of the federal congressional delegation, senator, schumer, ji gillibrand and they sent dump trucks, snowplows, in fact, the governor and county executive and i toured stranded truckers on the new york state thruway and very satisfied with the response that we're getting from the state and federal government and the governor's office has been in touch with my office and county executive mark, pulling cars every single day, multiple times a day d

since 2008, buffalo has been an end since 79 and people there can connect. so when i was a teenager even this was starting to come in to take form, but i do not think that i knew about it. even though i went to high school, went to the same high school, an integrated high-school, we came from opposite sides of main street. i did not have any sense of what life on the east side of buffalo was like or what jimmy was going through. we could talk. it was like we were from totally different worlds. all of a sudden i learned after getting out of high school he had become a cocaine dealer, gone to jail on a gun possession. our lives could not have been more divergent. >> host: so he, of course, very interesting to something you called the package which seems to be the crux of what you are chasing and what the debt collectors are effectively chasing and involved in. can you talk about his relationship and the packages and have that open up the rest of this amazing story? >> guest: so the package is this one piece of dead that follows. and at think when i talk about

let's get your history in buffalo or the vista in buffalo, how it's changed from what you knew growing up and in your childhood to the kind of place, it's one of the capitals of debt collection in the united states. >> guest: buffalo was once a big industrial powerhouse. it had all these steel mills and industries and starting in the '70s and '80s when i was a kid, that all starts to fall apart. unemployment goes through the roof. a lot of these old anna eshoo jobs, collections feels that would. some adobe buffalo is so good that collection because even though the country has been integrated recession since 2008, buffalo has been at since 1879 and people can connect with people are having a hard time. when i was a teenager even, this is starting to kind of take form but i don't think i knew about it if i went to high school with jimmy, we went to the same high school and he was supposed been integrated high school, we came from opposite sides of the main street. it wasn't until i start reporting this story that i learned when he was in high school his father was a heroin habit. after g

he did okay, he had a banking job, he went back to buffalo. who's behind sort of funding the initial purchases of these packages at the aaron level? >> guest: aaron's story, he's a banker in new york, comes back to because of low and -- buffalo, and sets up his own small collection agency. with brandon's help, he's getting paper that pays huge dividends. he starts thinking, wow, what if i did this on a much larger scale? he makes a few phone calls and finds eight investors who give him $14 million to do a trial run. the thinking is if he can do with this $14 million what he's done with his own money, these 300% returns and what not, then he'll do it even bigger for this 14 million. then he'll do a second round with 40 million and bigger and bigger. the problem is that there's several problems, one of which the great recession occurs, and people don't have as much money, and he encounters many problems along the way including the theft of some of this paper which, you know, i chronicle in the book. >> host: so basically before that -- while tha

she is in buffalo this morning. >> reporter: christine, welcome to south buffalo. this is lake-effect snow in full force. you can see the blowing snow. snow is coming down, sometimes at 2 inches per hour. there are areas around buffalo that have received almost 50 inches of snow. another 2 feet possible tomorrow. by the time this is said and done, low-end estimates could be 70 inches. in just look at this. cars over here, completely bury we passed cars left and right that were completely stuck. and look how powdery this is. when you just get in it and it's so fluffry. we're estimating this is a ratio of 15 to 20 to 1. that means you take 15 to 20 inches of this snow, you melt it down and it qualls 1 inch of water. so this is very, very powdery. the plows have been out here all day, though. the driving is just stretchers, though. it's very dangerous out here. most folks are just staying at home which is a good idea. we are going to get another round of this thursday into thursday night. and so this could be one of the worst lake-effect snow events this area has ever

buffalo? >> i know. hopefully the lake effect snow will taper off. cold front coming through, a little colder in frostburg, maryland. 31. weak cold front, winds out of the southwest. fairfax, a lot of clear skies and 50 degrees. time we've seen 50 degrees in about 48 hours. a pretty nice thing. a few clouds. you can see this is where the cold front is. no rain associated. a few high, thin clouds that that is it. it is so comfortable, 52 at reagan national, 45 in gaithersburg, 47 and dulles. not far.r is temperatures into the 20's, 25 in chicago, 26 in detroit. decoder air mass moves in tomorrow. windy, get pretty making it colder. this front is sliding through. if anything you will see a few passing clouds. tonight, temperatures tumble into the lower 20's to around 30 degrees downtown. it is going to be breezy. to 40 degrees. noticeably colder. and quite breezy, that will bring wind chill values down. tomorrow at 7:00 a.m., getting out the door for work and getting kids to the bus stop, these are the temperatures it will feel like. it will feel like

let's go to buffalo where meteorologist jennifer gray. a big departure for you from atlanta to be up in 6 feet of snow, my dear. >> reporter: it is quite a change from home. this is something that even people in buffalo can't believe. you know they are used to a lot of snow, but they say this is unprecedented. we could be setting all kinds of records, christine. almost an entire year's worth of snow falling in 24-to-48 hours. we are at a staging area where the bulldozers are because they are literally scooping this snow up and hauling it out. you see it back here. the guys are already out. we got here this morning around 4:00. visibility was zero. you could not see anything. plows were still out there trying to take care of the roads. this is a parking lot that has been plowed many, many times. there's probably 6 inches of snow underneath me that is packed down. there's so many streets south of buffalo that look like this. this is not a snow mound because of a plow. this is actual snow that has fallen and this is how much snow we are look

even those of us who grew up in buffalo and you live in buffalo, we're used to snow. but this one right now is historic. they say this is the worst snowstorm in the buffalo area in 40 years, is that right? >> yeah, i think so. probably more than that. they talked about the blizzard of '77, and i'm sure you remember that. right here in this area right here, lancaster area, it's pretty good. that's why i'm trying to get my buddy -- mario williams who's my next-door neighbor had to go to practice. and he had a bobcat that he did his. and he's going to do mine after practice. i can't wait for him. we're supposed to get two more feet of snow. so i'm glad i have a good buddy who's going to get his, bring it over, get rid of the snow i have in my driveway right now, which is probably 500, 600 yards long and get rid of it before these next two feet move in. >> your wife, jill, was sending us some amazing pictures of what's going on. will the bills play the jets in buffalo this weekend? is that a definite or is that on hold? >> it's still on hold. i saw some pictures of the st

there's the intense snow band, there's buffalo. this is a web cam of downtown buffalo. notice it's not even getting any snow on tuesday and wednesday. it's just to the south that was hardest hit. so really, that wind direction is so critical and makes the job as meteorologist very, very difficult. let's put it into perspective. five september meter snowfall totals. very, very impressive stuff. nonetheless, all the ingredients were there for the perfect winter storm. warm lake waters on lake erie, cool wind rushing over the top of it. and just to make matters worse, this has been some of the coldest temperatures since 1976 across much of north america. take a look at some of these aerial visuals coming out of the region. people getting stuck in their cars. only onele road to get around. obviously very difficult for emergency personnel as well. >> yeah, and it's not just buffalo you have to think about. also freezing temperatures in hawaii, also florida as well. >> 50 u.s. states. >> and when it melt, there's going to be a lot of water. >> we're going to see a warm-up int

to the north of the city of buffalo, it's just a few inches. to the south of buffalo, it is measured by feet. and in some cases, quickly approaching six feet. that's the snowfall. add to that the snowdrifts which have exceeded ten feet in some areas. there is so much snow, the city literally doesn't know when to do with it because the plows won't work. it is falling too fast. in some cases, four to five inches an hour, hour after hour after hour. they've been forced to bring in front end loaders and dump trucks. they've hauled out well over 100 dump trucks of snow, taking it out of the area. on top of that, in the hardest hit southern communities, the roadways are impassable. emergency crews are resorting to snowmobiles and toboggans if they have to move emergency patients. and there have been at least four deaths attributed to the storm in erie county surrounding buffalo. the problem is, there may be a lotup over the -- a letup over the next 24 hours. how much snow could come? some say 90 inches, some say more. however you look at it, the mayo

in the middle of november in buffalo. jake? >> martin savidge for us in buffalo, new york. stay warm. that rare event is creating thundersnow around the great lakes. meteorologist chad myers is joining us. what is thundersnow and how long is this extreme weather going to last? >> it's going to last for a little while longer today, stop tomorrow and then restart on thursday with new lake-effect snow warnings already posted for thursday for the same area. could you imagine 48 inches of snow, 48 in elma but only 3 inches of snow at the buffalo airport. a 45-inch difference in a matter of three or four miles depending on where you are. what happens is the steam from the lake -- i know it's not hot but it's still much warmer than the air. the air is in the teens. the water's in the 40s. the steam comes up and wants to rise. the rise almost creates convection, creates a thunderstorm but it's so cold it doesn't rain. it just snows. those are the snow totals from the airport alone. my dad and i used to watch the planes take off when i was a kid and then down where i lived, 42 inche

i can't believe i'm saying this after seeing martin in all that snow in buffalo, but buffalo should be gearing up for round two now, is that right? >> that's right. it's going to snow tonight, stop tomorrow and kick back up on thursday. we don't know where that 20 to 30 additional snow would be. could be farther north, could be farther south. but there's a potential for somebody, some area to have seven or eight feet by the time it's done. every single state this morning had one city or more below freezing, even hawaii. obviously you get to flagstaff it was 32, pensacola was 32 almost all night. but where i grew up, cheektowaga the winner, 51 inches of snow in less than 24 hours. from the buffalo airport to lancaster, there was a difference between three in-- 3 inches and 42 inches today. a difference from one side of the street to the other. but here comes thanksgiving and here comes another cold shot all the way across the eastern part of the country. a lot of people will be driving in this weather. tonight we know people are stranded on the thruway, buses are stranded, you need to s

buffalo has gotten the worse of it. >> that is exactly right. buffalo is still operating under a state of emergency this morning. 5,000 workers from the state are trying to dig out the crippled city. that this storm dumped more than seven feet of snow on buffalo and 10 ever died. many others are trapped in their homes and that's a particular problem because a number of roofs have collapsed under the weight of the snow and more are threatening to. travel is nearly impossible with 135 miles of new york threw way closed and cars buried. buffalo he has a travel ban is place, which is one of the reasons this sunday's bills game against the jets will be played monday night in detroit. buffalo now has more than tripled its average snowfall by this time of year. last year at this time, not even an inch of snow had hit the ground in buffalo. >> to make matters worse, the national weather service expects more snow tomorrow. saturday could bring temperatures in the 50's and rain, meaning that could lead to flooding and heavier snow on those roofs. bottom l

and, yes, you are looking at pictures from buffalo. a whole lot of flights are canceled, though, because people cannot get to the airport because the roads effectively look like this. this is not some residential side street and these are not luge tracks. this is i-90, it's an interstate. and first responders are having to get around on snowmobiles. and nonemergency travel is completely banned at this point. six people have reportedly died because of this weather. and most of that because of heart attacks. we are told a lot of it because of shoveling snow. this snow came at a particularly bad time for bethany. yesterday bethany went into labor. so travel ban be damned, her husband ventured out to drop off their son with his grandparents. here they are in very warm climates. but jared was headed home to get bethany to help a stranded driver and wouldn't you know it, the stranded driver turned toou to be a pediatric nurse. bethany picks up the story from there. he's in the hospital now. bethany, can you hear me? >> yes, i can. >> congrat

the buffalo area. this is just south of the city of buffalo. they're repor upwards of 4 to 5 feet. you want to see a cool picture? >> yes. >> how about this? a friend of mine sent this from lancaster. look at th guy right here. look it at this wall of snow nearly 10 feet high. that is a drift off his house. yes, he has been stuck outside of his house or rather inside his house, as most people have, just south and east of the buffalo area. so incredible snowfall totals. the biggest i've seen, 51 inches of snow so far, and they're not done yet. they've got about another 24 hours. and then another day coming up on thursday. wow. low temperatures overnight tonight. 24 d.c. 21 fredericksburg. 16 in leesburg. the winds will die down tonight, and that will allow temperatures to cool, and i think they'll allow temperatures to cool to the fact that we could see some records. reagan national is 18. that's the record set in 1891. no way we get close to that with a temperature of around 24 as forecast. but dulles

the people of buffalo, new york, don't scare easily. president mckinley was assassinated there in 1901 and they have moved on. they've loved their buffalo bills through the good years and bad and not only given the world tim russert and wolf blitzer. and while buffalo is a tough town, they may have finally met their match. a relentless snowstorm has dropped nearly six feet of snow coming in right off the lake with upwards of two more feet on the way. daily life has simply come to a halt for many across a big area and the storm has already cost several lives. it's officially a state of emergency tonight across a whole region. it's where we begin our coverage tonight with nbc's lester holt. lester, good evening. >> reporter: brian, good evening. it's a jaw dropping amount of snow. people can't get in and out of their neighborhoods. here in cheektowaga, 65 inches have fallen. i can touch the sign here. as you said it's been deadly. at least seven deaths attributed to this storm. 132 miles of new york throughway closed because of all this.

she's in buffalo with more. >> reporter: christine, welcome to south buffalo. this is lake-effect snow in full force. you can see the blowing snow, snow is coming down, sometimes at 2 inches per hour. there are areas around buffalo that have received almost 50 inches of snow. and another 2 feet possible tomorrow. bit time this is said and done, low-end estimates could be 70 inches. and just look at this, cars over here, completely buried. we passed cars left and right that were completely stuck. and look how powdery this is, you just get it in and it's so fluffy. we're estimating this is a ratio of 50 to 20 to 1, that means you take 15th inches of snow and melt it down and it equals one inch of water. it's very dangerous out here. most folks are staying at home, which say good idea. we are going to get another round of this thursday, into thursday night. so this could be one of the worst lake-effect snow events this area has ever seen, christine. >> wow. thanks, jennifer. along with the heavy lake-effect snow, widespread cold temperatures. in fact, temperatures

buffalo was you had the winds go right over the length of the lake just south of buffalo. it's cold enough air on top of the warm water that you get this lake machine to go. it's like a snow gun. again, it's not a big area but where it snowed, light nipping, thunder, 4, 5 inches per hour snow rates. that went on for a day or two. that's why we had the 60-plus snow inch totals. our winds will turn a little milder tomorrow in advance of a system before another cold shot on friday. the futurecast has that little burst of snow late today, tonight, passing well to our north. in the mountains, though, with some of the winds kicking up tonight and tomorrow, we're going to kick some of that up slope snow going o. tomorrow the cold is going to loosen its grip a little so we'll get into the mid and upper 40s. fredericksburg, you folks south might get to 50 degrees on thursday, but a reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive for friday. friday we fall back into the 30s. after that, it's going to get a lot nicer around here. we'll warm up to the 50-degree range on saturday. by sunday p

stronger than the guys of buffalo. right? still snowed out of their home stadium the buffalo bills will play their not so home game in detroit. some of the players so snowed in, they were hitching rides on snowmobiles to make the flight. as the icy weather sets in highways becoming dangerously slick an riddled with mangled cars from michigan to pennsylvania. even runways so slick from ice this delta flight to detroit skidding into a ditch on landing. no one was hurt. we did have a brief period of freezing rain in buffalo yesterday but have since warmed and rain overnight and this parking lot has puddles in it and more puddles to come. our flood watches have been now upgraded to flood warnings, a number of creeks and tributaries will go into flood stage in the next 24 hours, that is going to be a huge issue as all of this snow continues to melt. we'll see temperatures warm dramatically. take a look at this map into the 60s leer across western new york tomorrow and 10 to 15 degrees above average and above where we are today. 70
