frances folsom cleveland. frances or frank as she was known by her family was 21 years old when she married 49-year-old grover cleveland who was a bachelor. when they got married. we are getting ready to celebrate the 150th anniversary of her birth on july 21st. the clevelands married on june 2nd, 1886. there had been rumors when cleveland entered the white house in march of 1885, march being the month when presidents came in at that time before we moved it to a january inauguration. that cleveland was engaged, and there was all kinds of speculation about all of the different people that he might be engaged to. he and frank had gotten engaged shortly after she graduated from wells college in 1885. and it was something that he decided to keep secret. and part of the reason why he did that is if you ever study anything about cleveland's campaign in 1884, you will see that the story came out about his allegedly fathering a child out of wedlock. and there is a famous political cartoon has published after cleveland

i think cleveland authorities are trying to avoid a similar situation erupting there. i was in cleveland just before i came here, and we heard it from people who were demonstrating there in the streets much more peacefully and in smaller numbers. they say what is happening in ferguson is not isolated to ferguson. it's happening here, around us. unarmed or in this case a person armed, a young person armed with a toy gun are being killed in numbers that we cannot tolerate. there are studies that show that black men are 21 times more likely to be shot by a police officer than white men are. and so i think this case in cleveland had all the potential a young person with a toy being shot on a playground on a saturday afternoon had all of the potential, and it is, in fact, raising the concerns of local residents there, and police are trying to get out ahead of it and show their side of the story that, you know, it was a toy, but it looked very much like a real begun. the police officer was in fear. there is also this element of a 911 call where the issue of it being a toy wa

those in cleveland were on the tragic killing of one of their own. this video shows 12-year-old tamir rice in what would turn out to be the last minutes of his life. he can be seen walking along the sidewalk playing with and sometimes pointing what police would later learn was a pellet gun. at one point he stops pacing to play with the snow. he can be seen on the surveillance video making a snowball and tossing it on to pavement. minutes later he can be seen sitting in the gazebo. he can be seen getting up just as the police car pulls up. an officer pulls up and by the time the car has stopped tamir rice has been shot. you can see him fall to the ground just behind the police car. here's how it happened once more. within seconds of the squad car pulling up, you can see tamir rice falls to the ground. police had been called by a 911 caller who had warned that the gun rice was carrying was probably fake. here's a bit of that call. >> he's sitting on the swing right now, but he keeps pulling in and out of his pants and pointing it at people. probably a
