ed gillespie with 49%. just a few thousand votes separate the incumbent with ed gillespie. warner and his team are headquartered in arlington. we begin with debra at the warner camp. >> reporter: no one thought it would turn out like this, and actually, it hasn't turned out yet. what has turned out, everybody in this room in the ball rom in arlington is packed. you can hear every once in a while a cheer goes up when warner takes a slight lead, but the leads are .1% at times. he's been ahead in the polls, but the poll numbers and leads have been shrinking as of late. no one thought it was going to get to this at this point. we've had many big name democrats out here tonight, governor mcculla, of course, senator tim cane, everyone behind mark warner and it's been the kind of thing where they're not sure what's going on exactly. i keep refreshing my phone. you can see it's .1%, it keeps changing. fairfax county is always a little bit late to come in with the polls. at this point, they're saying they're at 100% reporting. so at this point, it's really just a couple of votes her

gillespie had trailed warner by about 17,000 votes out of more than 2 million cast. the virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg was there for the announcement. i don't think this is the last we'll hear of gillespie in virginia politics, is it? >> not at all. the buzz is already building he is the republican front-runner for the race for governor in 2017. republicans and democrats seem to agree gillespie ran a very solid campaign, was a strong candidate. despite facing a well known and popular incumbent. this morning gillespie called mark warner to concede the race. before then, thanking the faithful. basking in the glow of what was nearly an enormous upset, republican ed gillespie telling supporters today, the race is officially over. >> the numbers just aren't there. it's time to accept the decision of my fellow virginians. >> gillespie started 29 points behind mark warner in the polls, narrowing the gap to seven before election day. but voting was much closer. gillespie stunning election watchers everywhere including many democrats who considered warner a shoe-in. in t

ed gillespie. the million dollar lobbyist whose never looked out for you. >>> automakers kian hyundai are in hot water with the government today. >> erika gonzalez has more an what the companies allegedly did wrong. >> it all comes down that fuel economy sticker in the window when shopping for a car. kia and hyundai overstated their miles for gallon on that sticker anywhere from 1 to 6 miles per gallon. today attorney general eric holder announced a settlement. the environmental protection agency and justice department say kia and hyundai sold 1.2 million cars which emitted more greenhouse gases than the company said they would. now the automakers must pay a record $100 million fine. attorney g holder says the two automakers put their competition at a disadvantage by inflating their gas mileage estimates. >> all consumers have the right to know the cars they buy actually have the characterists tt a represented to the epa. a basic compact that hyundai and kia flagrantly violated in this case. >>h au

gillespie's was 49%. it was all about obama, in virginia. the second thing i'd really like to challenge your assertion on independent voters. i really think it's closer to 20%. and there's a lot of reasons we can't go into here, but look at colorado. look at the difference in the governor and senate race in olorado. pick six, ten, twelve races this year. those were swing voters. >> okay. who wants to take one question? henry? >> talking about the low turnout, i dispute this was a low turnout election, that when you take a look at the states where there were actually competitive races as opposed to states like mississippi or alabama where there were no competitive races, turnout was running between 70% and 75% of the 2012 level. the turnout differences between democratic urban areas and republican rural areas were not significant. in states where both parties were committing lots of resources, you saw voters turnout at rates that were pretty high for a midterm election and you saw partisans on both sides turn out. democrats did not lose color

and gillespie says he will accept the final results, but he is not there yet. >> i owe it to the voters of virginia and all of you to make sure that the outcome is final. for warner expect canvassing could shift a few votes here and there and that warner could even gain votes. the calling his lead close, but not small. but reaction seems mixed. some expected the well-known warner to win easily. >> i was incredibly surprised. but others not surprised he was nearly wiped out by the republican wing. >> it makes sense when people are not happy, they will be switching from one side to the other. >> the final polls before election day still had gillespie trailing by seven points. >> one of the problems with surveys is that they are snapshots in a moment in time. we did not get nearly enough snapshots, it turns out, in the last 72 hours. in thisare well-versed process. the canvassing process here in fairfax county is expected to wrap up by friday. the gardens of what happens, attorneys for mark warner or 100% certain he will be certified the winner of this race. >> less than two hours ago, pre
