julie carey is there now. julie? >> reporter: just finished talking to a couple store employees and a shopper who were inside the walmart around 4:30 when that chaotic scene we've been talking about started to unfold. you can see the invest yaund under way in the working lot, an off-duty law enforcement officer shot a man who apparently tried to rob the jewelry case inside the walmart. some still photos taken in the parking lot earlier in the afternoon from someone else inside the store. you can see the scene in daylight. we understand from police that a nan came in to the store had a hammer in each hand. went to the jewelry counter and started bashing it in, but he then fled. an off-duty law enforcement officer in the store followed him into the parking lot. confronted him, gave him command. when he didn't comply, the man was shot. he's flown to a hospital where he's being treated. i talked to shopper a short while ago, in the store the past two hour, didn't see the man with the hammers but saw the he chaos when he

julie carey has been talking with voters at the polls today and is live in mclean with details. julie? >> reporter: well, this mclean polling place is in the tenth congressional district so even before all the votes are tallied tonight, they know there will be a new member of congress. and that's one reason that at this precinct and many across northern virginia, turnout has been described today as steady, even in this midterm election year. with two precincts voting at belmont ridge middle school, this ashburn polling place is typically busier than most. for the first time in more than 30 years, the name of long-time republican congressman frank wolf is not on the ballot. voters will choose a new tenth district congressman, or congresswoman. the race between democrat john foust and barbara comstock is expected to be the closest in the commonwealth. foust cast his ballot this morning in mclean. comestock did the same and headed to principle william county to work the polls there. this ashburn democratic voter is eager to make a change. >> i would like to have a constructive, pro

julie carey, news4. >>> all we've had so far is cold weather, no snow. but crews all over the area are gearing up for that as as well. today the department of transportati in virginia unveiled its snow plan for the northern part of the state. about 4,000 plows and trucks will be available to clear all the of roads. six equipped with live streaming cameras to provide real-time video of the road conditions. vdot snow removal budget this year is roughly $145 million. about $52 million of that is designated for northern virginia. > winter is still technically more than a month away. but snow is already burying the shores of lake erie. take a look at this incredible time lapse video of those snow showers moving off the lake, and straight into buffalo. the national guard is being deployed there, but this is just the beginning. several feet of snow could be on the ground by the time it's all over, and in some places, already that's how much they have. the weather channel's mike bettes is there toughing it. >> reporter: the lake-effect has been pouring down in p

our northern virginia bureau chief, julie carey, got a copy of that audio recording today. julie? >> caleb crew pleaded guilty last month to killing his wife andrea. he had initially reported her missing in it august of 2013. but after her body was discovered, fairfax county detectives got the confession that revealed the truth about how she died. the portrait of a happy family. a shot taken on vacation. just a few weeks later, marine veteran caleb crew killed his wife, andrea. the two had been to court that day, a previous domestic violence charge against him was dropped. andrea's body was found in the okay would kwan river two days later. detectives chris flanagan and derek green brought crew into the vermont police station to talk. >> take a deep breath and walk us through it. i know you can do it. >> finally, crew begins to break. he tells detectives, as the couple drove home after court, they argued. crew parked the jeep in a parking lot. andrea threatened to call 911. >> she did start to call 911. i took the phone. i grabbed her out of her chair.

here is julie carey. >> reporter: jesse matthew entered a not guilty plea to all three charges against him, including attempted capital murder. he's accused of a 2005 attack in fairfax city. police say he dragged a 26-year-old woman into a wooded area, beat her and sexual assaulted her. outside the courthouse, ray morrow says the victim is prepared to return from india, where she now lives, to testify. he says her family, including a 6-month-old child, will accompany her. >> for us to step back into her life so many years later, i know that she is grateful, but again, i can't imagine what she's going through. but i'm just so pleased that she is cooperating, and she's been really a saint with me. >> reporter: matthew will soon be transferred back to albemarle county, where he faces a december preliminary hearing in connection with uva student hannah graham's abduction. matthew has not yet been charged in connection with her death. dna also links him to virginia tech student, morgan harrington. now the albemarle county sheriff is pointing to the case as a prime example of why virginia ne

for now, reporting live from fairfax county, julie carey, news4. >>> we are expecting an update this weekend on the search for two other young women who have gone missing in virginia over the past four years. orange county police are planning to announce a new search for alexis murphy, who disappeared in august of 2013. randy taylor has been convicted of her murder, despite the fact her body has not been found. police say they will also discuss the disappearance of samantha clark, who has been missing since 2010. >>> a man accused of kidnapping the montgomery county judge has now been found competent to stand trial. rick lee senning is charged with kidnapping and assaulting judge audrey crayton back in may. the judge claims senning attacked her at her home and forced her to drive him to gaithersburg, where she was able to get away and call for help. senning was living with crayton at the time of that incident, but she hasn't commented on their relationship. the trial is supposed to start next monday. it was postponed, so senning can get a new attorney. >>> a local mother is facing ch

news 4's julie carey is live. >> reporter: jesse matthew entered three not guilty pleas. his voice so soft at first the judge asked him to repeat his words. now he faces three charges, including an attempted murder, in connection with a 2005 rape in fairfax city. we had a camera in the courtroom today for matthew's appearance. >> jesse matthew jr. did deliberately intentionally and with premeditation attempt to kill r.j. in the commission of or subsequent to with intention to attempt to defile. how do you plead? >> not guilty. >> reporter: jesse matthew's defense attorneys waived the reading of the rest. then the trial date. telling the attorneys, i want to tell a date that's relatively firm. they finished on march 9, marking out eight days for trial. matthew's attorneys asked he be transferred back to the charlottesville area where he faces a december preliminary hearing in connection with uva student hannah graham's abduction. her remains were positively identified in late october. matthew has not been charged in connection with her death. dna links him to virginia tech

. >>> and a julie carey is headed to the scene is on the phone with us now. julie? >> reporter: just about inside of the potomac mills mall. you said, we understand there is an enormous police presence and just got new information from the county police on the scene. here's what they tell us about what happened. at about 4:30 this afternoon, a man entered the walmart. that's kind of on the back side of the potomac mills mall. he approached the jewelry counter with a hammer in each hand. he then began breaking up the glass on the jewelry counter. there happened to be an off-duty law enforcement officer in the walmart at that time that confronted the man. the man fled from the store, but the off-duty officer pursued him into the parking lot. the officer then confronted the man again. gave him some commands. when the man did not comply, that's when prince william county police say this off-duty officer shot the man. we understand that that man has now been flown to an area hospital for treatment. we don't know anything about his condition and naturally, many prince wil
