[ chanting ] >> it's become the new black friday tradition. union organized protests at walmarts across the country, to spur the giant retailer to boost pay for its associates. these protesters are walking from capitol hill over to the brand-new walmart here in washington, d.c. what they say they want are $15 an hour wages for the workers at walmart. and they want more flexibility for the ability of the workers there to get a full 40-hour work week. a lot of the workers there, these guys say, aren't able to get enough hours in the week to have a real sustainable job and provide for their families. we met up with melinda, a d.c. resident who says her $9.90 hourly wage is not enough to keep her from being forced to collect federal food benefits to feed her family. >> i do depend on the government. i still receive medicaid and i also receive s.n.a.p

josh lipton has more. >> for qualcomm, china offers great potential and also significant risks. the company stands to make a lot of money because of growing depend in china for smartphones that rely on its technology. but qualcomm also has said that china presents significant challenges. so what exactly is going on? for one, chinese hand set makers that rely on qualcomm technology sign a license agreement and pay royalties. analysts at fbr estimate that if a chinese company else is a $200 smartphone using qualcomm technology, then it could be on the hook to pay qualcomm about $8 per phone. here's the problem. qualcomm says unnamed chinese companies are either not paying the royalties or underreporting the number of phones they're selling. that's potentially a big problem for qualcomm. its licensing business as a whole represents about 30% of overall revenue. it's a problem. we're still trying to quantify it, but it's a substantial problem for these guys. we think it's probably affecting revenues as much as call it $500 million. so it is a sizable amount. >> separately, qualcomm

josh lipton has that story. >> reporter: specialists in robotics are gathering at the white house and at three universities including the one i'm at here, uc berkeley. their mission is to figure out ways in which robots can be used to fight the deadly ebola outbreak. >> the idea is to think about what are the technologies that can be used in the near term to assist the workers and patients and also what are the research needs for the longer term. >> so what are some ways robots could be used? physicians could use robots to diagnose patients remotely so limiting their own risk. you could see robots decontaminating hospital rooms and robots potentially able to insert ivs. >> the robot, for example, you can imagine you would bring something near the arm or hand and it would be able to scan with infrared or ultrasound and position the device to insert the needle. >> reporter: so you can see how that would have a lot of application for health care workers who have to don that protective gear, makes handling needles a lot more difficult. there are challenges with using robots in general. th

and san jose state professor scott meyers lipton who students came up with the idea is not one to rub it in. >> minimum wage did not hurt the economy. in fact, it pumped, we estimate, over $100 million into the economy. >> reporter: they held a press conference two years ago claim if the minimum wage went up, san jose would lose 2800 jobs. but the numbers are in and they tell a different story. unemployment dropped from 7.6% to 5.2%. the number of businesses grew from 75,000 to 84,000. average employee hours remained con stand around 37 -- constant around 37 hours. >> things in san jose have gone pretty much as expected. business growth is still robust. restaurant growth has been robust and we have seen a small increase in restaurant prices, a little less than 2%. >> reporter: the san jose downtown show, says the improving economy nullified those doomsday predictions. >> the great recession ending and the comeback of the economy, really made it much ado about nothing. >> reporter: speaking of doomsday scenarios, mayor chuck reed said back then enforcing the new minimum wage would cost

"the wall street journal" reporting that apple is eyeing the bond markets again lining up a potential new deal. deutsche bank and goldman sachs are arranging a call for the firm with investors this afternoon in london and the deal possibly at least partly in euros could come as soon as tomorrow and this would be a first. apple has never issued debt in currencies other than the dollar before. apple just now confirming to me that the call will take place. remember, this call is for potential buyers of the debt. it's not a public call. apple is simply taking advantage here of the current interest rate environment. they would expect apple to use proceeds of the bond sale to fund the buyback program and keep paying dividends and make acquisitions. decision by apple to jump into the bond markets again isn't a total surprise. earlier this year the ceo said the company planned to be active in domestic and international bond markets during 2014 for an amount of debt financing similar to what a

josh lipton out west with the details. >> we know investors are big fans of the new iphones but how would they feel about a new i-bond? apple is lining up a potential new deal possibly in euros. deutsche bank arranging a call with investors. a bond sale in europe makes sense for apple given the region's rock bottom borrowing costs. the average yield investment grade corporate debt in europe is around 1% with an average maturity of five years. in comparison a bond issued in dollars maturing in five years yielding around 2%. this could be another cheap funding source for the iphone maker. apple was last in the bond market on april 29 with a $12 billion deal following up on last year's $17 billion sale according to deal logic. jean munster says it is a clear bullish sign about how apple feels about its future. it must feel confident about business if they are willing to sell debt. munceter expects apple to use assets from the deal to buy back more stock and committed to a capital return program but thinks the company is now setting the stage to expand the buy back program, an announcement he

we spoke to the managing director david lipton and asked him about differences over whether the government should save or spend. >> i think people have come around to believe that countries have to operate on every margin from putin that they have. and so where there's room to demand more, they'll demand more. and where there's not but there are structural reforms to be done, people will focus on structural reforms. i think if there's disagreement, i think there's an understanding you have to do some demand and some supply measures. if there's disagreement, it's about who can do how much. but i think what we'll see and i would add that in the eurozone, in particular, where the economies have been a little more sluggish than people had expected, that means also that the level of concern's a little higher. so we're seeing countries now coming around to thinking about what more they can do. >> we're joined now by jerry fally, and we continue to debate what the best path of action is to get growth going again, particularly in europe. you think that we will have outright sovereign qe by next mo
