mark warner and ed gillespie in a neck and neck race for the senate seat. >> mark warner has 49% of the vote. ed gillespie with 49%. just a few thousand votes separate the incumbent with ed gillespie. warner and his team are headquartered in arlington. we begin with debra at the warner camp. >> reporter: no one thought it would turn out like this, and actually, it hasn't turned out yet. what has turned out, everybody in this room in the ball rom in arlington is packed. you can hear every once in a while a cheer goes up when warner takes a slight lead, but the leads are .1% at times. he's been ahead in the polls, but the poll numbers and leads have been shrinking as of late. no one thought it was going to get to this at this point. we've had many big name democrats out here tonight, governor mcculla, of course, senator tim cane, everyone behind mark warner and it's been the kind of thing where they're not sure what's going on exactly. i keep refreshing my phone. you can see it's .1%, it keeps changing. fairfax county is always a little bit late to come in with the polls. at this point, t

they came in big for mark warner. he won in fairfax county by some 53,000 votes, also won in prince william county. those two voting blocks very crucial to statewide victory. the two men are running neck and neck in louden county. we're hearing the word re-count being uttered. but as the gap has widened, one long time analyst has said that he thinks that mark warner is able to maintain a lead of 10,000 votes or more, there may not be a challenge or a request for a recount by ed gillespie, but that is something we'll continue to watch. from now live from arlington. i'm julie carey. >>> it is still very close in that senate race. and from gillespie headquarters, what's their sense of things? >> reporter: for a lot of folks watching at home, they may be surprised. but for many of the people i'm talking to in this auditorium here in springfield, they're saying they expected this all along. these are very fervent supporters of ed gillespie. they're watching a lot of the republicans who are projected to win other races acro

here is video of mark warner voting in alexandria. he has laid low throughout the day, spending time with his friends d family, awaiting the result tonight. warner has led throughout the race in the polls. we caught up with former chair of the republican national committee in chantilly. gillespie has trailed throughout the race but inks have tightened up in the last few days. winespie thinks he will them a shocking the world tonight, politically speaking. turnout has been steady and smooth at about 80% average. itt is what they expect when comes to the midterm election. they have seen voting issues with touchscreen machines. officials dealing with those problems and a campaign is not terribly concerned that they will have an impact on the race. and welose at 7:00 should have information shortly after that. you.ank if you have not voted yet, you have time to do so. the polls close at 7:00 in virginia. in d.c. and maryland, polls close at 8:00. you can find your location by entering your address on the state board of elections website.

obama won virginia, mark warner won it by a point last night. if you take a look at the county map in virginia, this is the red/blue scheme. big democratic county is up here, we get a lot of the vote from, the richmond area and a few scattered areas that are blue, otherwise a big sea of red. 2012, obama/romney in virginia. the exact same thing. mark warner before the last six years or so, before the obama era, where this polarization has accelerated, he would run and win in south virginia. you look at the counties last night ed gillespie is performing exactly the same as mitt romney did. this is something for democrats to be thinking about as they go forward. you can win in virginia, for instance, you can win with the so-called obama coalition but you also end up writing off big chunks of the state. democrats have to think about a way to get those voters back who were willing to vote for them not that long ago. >> in terms of the polling, bottom line, people are lying to pollsters or they're telling pollsters something they think they're going t

he's hoping to unseat mark warner. warner cast his ballot this morning. julie carey has been talking with voters at the polls today and is live in mclean with details. julie? >> reporter: well, this mclean polling place is in the tenth congressional district so even before all the votes are tallied tonight, they know there will be a new member of congress. and that's one reason that at this precinct and many across northern virginia, turnout has been described today as steady, even in this midterm election year. with two precincts voting at belmont ridge middle school, this ashburn polling place is typically busier than most. for the first time in more than 30 years, the name of long-time republican congressman frank wolf is not on the ballot. voters will choose a new tenth district congressman, or congresswoman. the race between democrat john foust and barbara comstock is expected to be the closest in the commonwealth. foust cast his ballot this morning in mclean. comestock did the same and headed to principle william county to work the polls there. this

warner got what he polled. actually, the polls were dead-accurate on what mark warner got. all i can say is, you know, he must have -- it must have been a heck of an election night for him, when you come down 16%. says something about the obama democratic party, doesn't it? >> yeah, it does. it also says something about the obama democratic party in virginia, where somebody who didn't think he had a terribly close race probably would have done things differently if ed gillespie had gotten a couple million three weeks out. i can imagine that mark warner would have run a different race three weeks out. it shows the stability of the obama coalition in virginia, that it's now held up over a governor's race, a senate race, two presidential races. virginia is not a red state anymore, not even a light red state anymore. could gillespie have won? perhaps. certainly with additional resources. but then again, if i were a national party strategist, and i had to decide whether to expend money three weeks out, and the expense of the washington market, and i saw mark warner polling at 49

mark warner lost 300 votes as they discovered math and transcription errors and 500 provisional ballots that have to be reviewed. 24-year-old matthew just finished asking the electoral board to accept his vote. he had to cast a provional b ballot because his name was missing. >> as a young citizen, it's important. >> reporter: his vote would add one more vote to mark warner's votes. it's how they're shifting. the painstaking process of canvassing the results is under way. the intensity ramps up when a race is close. already, errors have been discovered. >> based on the numbers i've seen we've not seen anything that would make a dramatic change. there was one precincts that looked like a 900 vote shift and one precinct a 300 vote shift the other way, nothing in the thousands of vote totals that looks like it would have an impact on senator warner's current lead. >> reporter: this long term official agreed that the current lead is too big for gillespie overcome. >> we won't see a flip of a race that has a 15,000 vote margin. there's too many votes there. >> reporter: while warner declared

mark warner spoke to his supporters last night. he seems confident in victory. he admits it is by a small margin. he said what people need to get is that the voters want an end to partisan politics. they want their elected officials to vote together. >> near has a monopoly on truth, virtue or patriotism. i will work with anyone, democrat, republican, independent, you name it, if we're going to make sure we get our country's problems fixed. >> and republican ed gillespie has not conceded. there is still some work that needs to be done. >> obviously a very close race. 0.6% i think was the last count. so we're going to be patient here. and i think we need to be respectful of the voters. >> and so this morning that canvas to certify the results begins here in fairfax county. will there be an actual recount. now, virginia does not have an automatic recount process. so the apparent losing candidate would have to actually request a recount. they can only do that if the difference is 1% or less. now, kind of interesting here. there are three places in virginia with less

. >>> another race democrats didn't think they had to worry about was mark warner's re- elecon bid in virginia. >> still very, very close. nick giovanni is in the election center with just how close. mike. >>reporter: yeah, mike, polls have now been closed for 11 hours and this one is still too close to call, at least that's how ed gillespie's camp sees it. he has yet to concede anything to incumbent democrat mark warner who many thought would coast to victory lane in this senate race. that's not how it's shaking out this morning. according to the ap's latest numbers, the former governor, well, his lead is now down to about 12,000 votes over challenger ed gillespie with all but a fraction of precincts reporting. that's a difference of about.55%, well within the range of a recount. in virginia a candidate can call for one if the margin of victory is less than 1%. late last night while warner was giving a victory speech, gillespie told a room full of his supporters he'll accept the final outcome of whatever it ends up being, but he says it owes to the voters of virginia that make it fin
