i'm mike bettes for nbc news. >> we promised you could feel better after that. these are the locations we're talking about. buffalo right there. watertown. all these areas off the lake seeing several feet of snow. and, in fact, more than 50% of the nation now covered in snow, thanks to the cold and all these active weather systems. even frostburg and bay ard picking up a half foot of snow. 20s, fredericksburg, around quantico, stafford too. mainly in the teens and low 20s throughout the area. and as far as that lake-effect goes, you can still see it here on satellite and radar. for us, it's a mostly clear sky we're going to e eveni that will allow the wind to really abate and ease next couple hours. so clear and cold by 9:00. not as window by 11:00. our temperature goes from 33 to 27 by 11:00 p.m. so will it feel better tomorrow? you're g to need to make sure the kids are dressed all up, and that inclus a hat, warm coat, gloves, even a scarf for the girls or ladies heading out. your low tempes tonigh these are the air temperatures, dropping to 17 around in the c

mike bettes has managed to dig out and has the latest from hamburg, new york. >> reporter: yeah, there's a lot of work to be done, you're trying to clear about 40 inches of snow here in hamburg. but people have lives they've got to get on with. the gentlemen behind us are trying to clear the snow off their vehicles here. i'm going to talk to them here. where are you from? and where are you trying to get to? >> washington state. trying to get to the airport, of course. >> which airport? >> buffalo. >> reporter: how many of you are there? and how many vehicles to clear out? >> six vehicles and probably seven or eight of us. >> reporter: you ever seen anything like this before? >> back in washington state, we get the snow, but nothing quite like this. >> how tough has this been to clear? >> wet and heavy on the bottom. >> yeah. >> powdery on top. >> it's exhausting, huh? >> it is. it is. >> keep up the good work. they've got this one just about cleared out. this one has been cleared out. i'd say they made a fundamental error, they piled up the snow behind the vehicle. these guys have got it

that's where mike bettes joins us from. mike, what is it looking like there now? >> well, it is a winter wonderland. south of buffalo. it's a wonderful life. we measured 20 plus inches of snow here. and you know, we come out to the the roadways and there's a big roundabout. it an inch or two of compact snow here. the plows coming through constantly. but what a mess. you can certainly see the visibility is greatly reduced. plow through the snow. if you have front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, you're probably not getting around today. that's for sure. a lot of folks are having fun as well. it's an off day for them. as they told us, this is just a warmup for what's to come this winter, they hope. many roadways around buffalo, major arteries are shut down. but i got to tell you, the snow band is very narrow. 10 to 15 miles wide at most. if that, you're in sunshine. if you're in it, you're in what we're in now. 20 inches plus in the last 12 hours. over the next 12 hours, it will potentially double what we have on the ground. the snow will be waist deep by tonight. w

mike bettes joins us live from hamburg, new york, buffalo suburb. mike, good morning. .his i >> reporter: it really is. this is a record setter. this ia that has been really shut down. they know how to deal with snow here. let me give you a lay of the land. our crew is stranded here with dozens of other travelers. we barely made it here yesterday. we were the last car to roll in after a plow it. we're stuck. we didn't have a four-wheel-dri. this car was parked here all day yesterday, all day today. it's under a portico. there's a roof! if we didn't have a four-wheel-d we would have been trouble yesterday. our cameraman got stuck behind semis that got stuck. if we hadn't picked him up, he would have been i a lot of trouble. this is since about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. look how much we picked up on the two feet we had on top of that. we'll trudge throu the snow. it is about knee deep. it is tough to get through. it's a fluffy snow. it is terrible for making a snowball or snowman. this part has actually been plowed. this is about a foot of snow here.

msnbc mike bettes in hamburg, new york for all of the snow and ice. i guess, mike snowman building is kind of easy for you? >> what do you do with the snow. one of the questions lately is where do you put the snow when you talk five six feet of snow. pile it with front end loaders, get mountains of snow like this. this is a huge pile that they dug out at our hotel here. to give you some indication. look how tall that pile is. that may be there until we get a spring melt. it may not go anywhere any time soon. state of emergency still in effect here in western new york. travel ban in effect i-90 new york through way shut down. more snow happened overnight. we had four feet. then another foot overnight. still more cars buried. where do they go? they have been asking us that question at the hotel. can we get out? i said good luck. there's a travel ban. likely not getting where you need to go. you can't go anywhere. truly a memorable snowstorm. i have to tell you, starting to get slick now, too, under this snow, trying to get traction it is a sheet of ice.

the weather channel's mike bettes is in the town of hamburg, new york. just south of buffalo. mike, good morning. >> reporter: hey jose. good morning. i have to tell you an impressive storm even by western new york standards. they're used to a lot of snow. here we picked up about 40 inches of snow in 24 hours. this is the result. it's left people strand at this hotel. then that got a huge task of digging these vehicles out. they have to plow the driveway out of the hotel and they have to get out to a plowed street if they can. imagine waking up this morning and seeing this. i know, what this vehicle is because i saw it yesterday. it's a mercedes-benz under there. it's going to take forever to get it out. there's a lot of road closure. the i 90 new york throughway is officially closed. they tell us vehicles on it about 60 semis, once they get the semis unstuck and moving they might be able to open up the highway. it's been plowed. we've actually seen a few vehicles -- a few semis, at least up-and-down the freeway. at least those vehicles are getting unstuck. i want to show you

the weather channel's mike bettes has more on the cold weather gripping the nation. he should know because he's in hamburg, new york. how you doing? >> reporter: we are here in the village of a.m. burg south of buffalo. it has snowed about 15 inches since 10:00 last night and this morning. this is what they are waking up to. it is truly blowing and drifting and it will continue like this, we believe, for at least the next two days. so we could be looking at record-setting snows in this part of the world. there are so many interstates that have been impacted today. including portions of i-90 through new york that are shut down. the new york thoroughway and the nay yor says a travel ban in effect for south buffalo. schools are closed. buffalo international has closed. roughly 40 flights canceled there. they try to keep ahead of the snow on this runways. travel is not advised. some of the roadways will be closed down pretty much all day long. but the locals, they love it. this is what they live in western new york for. lake-effect snow. but the biggest storm this year a
