brianne carter is live in northwest to tell us about this. brianne: according to this information, part of the documents show exactly where those dangerous intersections are located. this l and 16th street is one of them but the improvements are also evident. take a look at these barriers and the lane markings for a separate bike lane. they are part of the improvements that have been done within the past year to keep people around the city safe. now, we were out talking to people at those intersections that in 2014 were deemed the most dangerous for either pedestrians, bicyclists or collisions who happen there. and while some say they have seen a number of improvements and do feel like it's not only a responsibility of the city and the drivers but also the pedestrians and the bicyclists to stay safe, other people we talked to, they say they still feel like they might be putting their life at risk just across the street. >> coming all the way from the third lane over to try to make it against the red light. >> police out here directing traffic

brianne carter has reaction for us. what are you hearing, brianne? brianne: some people here on campus knew about this. others did not. now, we listened to that audio recording and because of the graphic nature decided not to air it. now, in this statement from the university president to students, the audio recording is described in words such as "offensesive" and "sexually explicit." now, university officials say that the blurred lyrics as they're being called spread through social media but they say they originally learned about it and when first made aware of it late last semester. immediate action was taken. the rugby club was charged with violating the university's code of conduct. now, the club was later sanctioned by the school. according to officials, the rugby club appealed the sanctions and that appeal process wrapped up late last week. now, the team's activities are suspended indefinitely and each member is required to attend training on sexual assault and violence. >> that's the way we looked at it is it's a team. and, you know, that eve

reporting live brianne carter, abc 7 news. leon: thanks brianne. following a developing story now in virginia where a man was shot after a home owner defended himself in alexandria. this happened during what police say was an attempted burglary along lenore lane in the huntington neighborhood. jeff goldberg spoke with that home owner about half-hour ago. jeff joins us now. jeff, what's the latest here? jeff: leon some pretty amazing comments coming from this gentleman feeling certainly traumatized by what happened. certainly in shock by it all. we'll hear from him in a moment. first, i want to tell you a little bit about background about what happened. this is the home on lenore lane where this took place this morning, this attempted burglary. after 8:30 just after 8:30 fairfax police got a call about a break-in happening here. they arrived and actually this is what happened according to the home owner. the home owner says he saw a man trying to break into his side glass door on his porch. the man was using a brick to try to get in. the home owner

as brianne carter found, some drivers had trouble. >> watch as this white mustang skids and then spins 360 degrees along east market street. just up the street more slipping and sliding on the snow covered roads. >> there was a couple of accidents. really bad one up the road a while ago. car is pretty totalled. >> by mid morning several inches have piled up on these neighborhood streets. across northern virginia, vdot has nearly 4,000 trucks out working to clear the roads. the plows are down but with the rate of snow falling, it just keeps piling up. if needed the national guard is on standby ready to help with the winter weather mess. also trying to stay ahead of the weather, karen couquet. >> you really have to scrape in order to get it to come up. but, you know, it's winter yet. we haven't gotten to spring. >> with conditions continuing to deteriorate, this starbucks store owner decided to close the doors at noon. >> roads are a little bit scary. a little bit slippery, a little bit slidy. >> and this is that type of snow that is wet and heavy so you really got to get in there to get

in alexandria, brianne carter, abc 7 news. alison: two parents pleaded guilty to leaving their two children alone inside a cold car while they attended a wine tasting. the incident happened in january in northwest washington. christopher lucas and jenny chang pleaded guilty to two counts each of second degree endangerment to children. they'll be on probation and required to complete parenting classes. leon: an alert now about your tap water. it may soon start smelling and tasting a bit more like chlorine. that's part a process they'll learn to use the systems that carry drinking water to homes and businesses. parts of d.c., arlington county and northeast fairfax county will be affected from march 23rd to may 4th. to reduce that chlorine taste and odor, run the water a few minutes before you use it and then refrigerate it or use a walter filter, you'll be ok. alison: former virginia senator jim webb could be making a run for president. he has held some private meetings in south carolina with democratic party leaders there. webb

ju brianne carter is keeping an ion conditions out there. she is live in leesburg, va. brianne: we are still feeling and hearing some of that sleet mixing in with the snow in leesburg. here in the parking lot, already starting to pile up. it is an ic, what next -- icy wet mix. rose looking ok at this hour but they are slick. they may just look wet but they are starting to get slick on route seven. here in northern virginia we know that vdot has 3800 pieces of equipment on the roads. treating conditions overnight on roads like this one and the neighborhood roads as well. they will be working to drop that salt and sand mix. they couldn't pretreat because of all the rain we had overnight. they will put that mixture on the roads to try to make it as safe as possible. they are asking people to stay off the roads to give those crews the room and the time they need to treat the roadways. one of the other things we are starting to scene mixing is the wind. a bit of the ice is still mixing in as well. we will monitor the conditions in northern virginia throughout the morning. ju
