authorities have spent decades investigating durst. the 1982 disappearance of his wife kathleen remains unsolved. in 2001 he admitted to killing and dismembering his neighbor morris black, but he was acquitted of murdering black. but his arrest this weekend comes in connection with a 2000 murder of his close friend and spokesperson susan berman. to make it all the more dramatic, durst may have issued a confession during the filming of that documentary. now brian webb is here in new york with more on that. brian, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. it reads like pull. fiction and investigators hope they have the smoking gun. robert durst was arrested hours before the conclusion of the six-part hbo documentary and it was in that final episode televised last night that durst may have unwittingly offered a confession to murder. killed them all, of course. >> reporter: that's the voice of robert durst talking to himself in the bathroom. he was still wearing a microphone in the bathroom following the hbo documentary "the jinx." the fb

durst. if information comes out we will take the opportunity to do that. >> reporter: one case that piqued interest is in the small town of eureka. 16-year-old karen mitchell went missing in november, 1997. she was on her way to work at a day care center. according to local news reports at the time, she was last seen leaning into a light blue car that she might have gotten into. a witness gave police a description of the man behind the wheel. the sketch, bearing a striking resemblance to robert durst. >> durst apparently knew karen mitchell. karen volunteered at a homeless shelter. in addition, mitchell's aunt ran a shoe store at a mall and durst had gone there several times, one time dressed as a woman. >> reporter: author and investigative reporter matt berbeck wrote "a deadly secret" chronicling robert durst, copies of which were found in his houston home. in new orleans where he checked into this hotel using a fake name, court documents also revealed he had more than $40,000 in cash, mos

>> bob durst didn't kill susan berman. he's ready to end all the rumor and speculation and have a trial. >> reporter: the film maker told "gma" the critical interview was done over two years ago but didn't realize durst's off-camera admission until more recently long before durst's arrests he went to police and said you might want to hear this. >> it was so chilling to hear it. it was disturbing to hear it. makes you very uncomfortable to hear it. that's probably -- >> reporter: now, you would think that all this was going to be simple as mr. durst was in a louisiana court this morning and waived his rights to extradition, said he will go to los angeles and face charges there. but of course, it's not that simple. the authorities there found a .38 pistol in his hotel room so they may hold him on charges in louisiana until that is dealt with. then he can go to california and deal with the murder charges. >> thank you so much. let's bring in ann bremner, criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor who has closely followed

his wife, kathy durst who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. the texas neighbor who he quas acquitted of murdering in 2003. and susan berman who authorities say they were getting ready to question in his wife's disappearance. jarecki says the team didn't discover the audio until nine months ago, more than two years after the interview. as the series unfolded on tv jarecki told abc news he became nervous about his own safety and last week called the police. >> i was saying i'm uncomfortable. and i have security. i've never had security in my life. my family's uncomfortable. and i feel that this arrest should be made. >> reporter: today executive producer said they wouldn't comment any further because they are now likely witnesses in the trial. one of kathy durst's friends is praising their documentary while having mixed emotions about the case. >> i am totally thrilled. it's not going to bring kathy back, but i feel vindicated. and i also feel that you know it's been such a long time in coming. >> reporter: authorities fighting to extradite durs

durst waived extradition. if convicted he could face the death penalty. >>> the secret service is testing an envelope that could possibly possess cyanide. the letter was received monday at a screening facility. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. this letter is now on its way to another lab for more confirmation, but it has already tested what's called presumptive positive for cyanide. the letter was addressed to the white house but it was screened with all white house mail at a facility in maryland and never got to the white house. the secret service said an envelope sent to the white house was potentially tested positive for cyanide. it was located miles from the executive mansion where white house mail is screened. initial biological testing showed up negative but follow-up testing on tuesday showed a positive reading for cyanide. the envelope was carrying an unknown milky substance. if the envelope was addressed to president obama. the sample has now been take

the filmmaker confronted evidence that durst may have been susan berman's killer.be a letter durst wrote to susan berman that seemed to match the hand writing on an anonymous letter telling police where to find her body. >> the writing looks similar and the spelling is the same, so ing can see the conclusion the cops would draw. >> reporter: when the interview was over, a shaken durst went to the bathroom, still wearing his microphone and could be heard muttering to himself about the interview. >> reporter: on saturday, the day before the country heard his admissions on television authorities arrested robert durst in new orleans and charged him with the murder of susan berman. today durst's attorney said he's innocent and vowed to fight the charges. >> bob durst didn't kill susan berman. he's ready to end all the rumor and speculation and have a trial. s >> pelley: so, erin, if the tape is what the producers say that it is, would any of this be admissible in court? >> well, defense attorneys told me if this goes to trial, they will fight to keep those statements out, and, of course they'
