jay korff has been following the story. jay, this started because the manager would not give her a free ride? jay: that's right, they say she got off the escalator, walk down here, went up to the manager's kiosk at stadium armory metro station, asking for a free ride. he said no. they say that he then spit on him and stabbed him. riders are reacting. these are the pictures metro officials want you to see. they say this woman enter the station and southeast d.c. sunday and asked the standish manager to ride for free. the authorities say he said no. she then spit on the manager and a physical altercation ensued during which the suspect stabbed the manager. >> the weapon was believed to be a kitchen knife. jay: the suspect fled, but metro officials captured surveillance photos moments before the attack. >> we are hoping the public will help us identify her. it is a gray pullover with a blue and white striped on the sleeve. jay: riders are concerned about the safety of station managers. >> they have to deal with a lot because t

jay korff has the story. certainly a disturbing account. jay: it is and the attorney for the alleged victim gave us a new development, a new look at this incident, including one of our reporters was able to look at cell phone video that the attorney says capture the incident. we were not permitted to record the video, but we looked at it. it shows the officer pointing the gun at william cunningham's head and then down his mouth. >> the officer took total control over whether i lived or died, whether i ever got to talk to my wife. jay: he said the emotional trauma of that day in may in his bowie neighborhood still haunts them. >> i don't sleep well at night. jay: sunday, the 36-year-old spoke publicly for the first time since the incident. he was walking home after being dropped off by a cousin. they say that the officer thought that the car that cunningham was in was pulled over a legally and ordered him back into the car. cunningham did not reply, and that is when officer santiago pointed his gun right at cunningham. >> the police officer

jay korff, abc 7 news. leon: this just in from the district -- a man is in critical condition after a stabbing at 7:00 on f street southeast. there is no word on any arrests. a prince george's county police with feudal information for an officer who was killed in a crash. the service for officer brennan rabain will take place in temple hills, maryland. he will be buried in davidsonville road stop the police are looking for anyone who witnessed the crash. if you have information, please contact the police department. alison: and we have no information about a train derailment in north carolina. there are reports more than 50 people were injured. the train crashed into a tractor-trailer, but stopped on the tracks. witnesses say the truck driver was trying to navigate a turn. the train left charlotte and was due at union station the district this afternoon. none of the injuries are life-threatening. >> we heard the train below its whistle, and within seconds that is when the impact occurred. alison: passengers

jay korff is live in springfield with what is on the table. jay: these are not random numbers i'm going to show you. one, 7 16, 28, 50. those are the busiest and most popular routes in all of northern virginia. today, the public conversation today on decreasing congestion on the roadways. we lose so much of our lives in northern virginia traffic. >> we believe in unlocking the transportation crisis through regional collaboration. jay: wednesday night, the northern virginia transportation authority held a packed public hearing on which projects will receive funding of fiscal years 2015-2016 from a pot of $300 million. any of those said it should go to congestion-reducing road widening projects. >> by one measure, the delays are slower than the posted speed limits all over. that is just one weekday. it is about 900,000 of wasted hours every day. jay: the widening of this road in springfield to not make the cut. >> the 13 projects you have selected have ratings of less than 12.5. we want to know why it was not included. jay: the authority members

jay korff, abc 7 news. leon: metro is turning off the lights for safety reasons after lights caught fire in smoldered last week at two's over line stations. -- two silver line stations. no injuries. the airport authority that built the silver line is working with the contractor on the problem. metro is cutting power to the hand rails and installing temporary lighting at the stations. alison: scary moments at the westwood shopping center in bethesda when a car slammed into the building. the car went right inside the rite aid pharmacy. fortunately, there were no injuries. the cause of the crash is under investigation. the store will remain closed while repairs are made. concerns tonight about the cdc. the kennel of safety experts are sharing troubling findings. they found that labs have inadequate training and a lack of leadership. the study found that staff is afraid of reporting accidents. the cdc says it is taking action to address the issue. leon: college basketball excitement in full wing, and georgetown

jay korff live at the montgomery county air park with the story. jay? jay: an remarkable milestoneemotional day. it pairs pilots and their planes with men and women wounded in combat after 9/11 who need a place to fly anywhere in country for medical purposes. so back in 2007 sergeant jesse murphy lost both of his legs above the knee and nearly his life when he was blown off the side of a mountain in afghanistan by a bomb. he spent the last couple of weeks here at walter reid medical center undergoing his 63rd surgery. but he didn't have to pay for the flight here or the flight home as he and his costs were picked up by the local businessman who is a pilot. short time ago murphy and his family departed to their home in tampa, florida. >> to know you're finally going home and to be in a plane, you can't really -- can't really explain it. you feel very, very loved and very cool. bottom line you're flying on a private plane. and i didn't have to worry about anything else at the airport. i'm staying with my family and that's it. so hey, fantastic. jay: comin

jay korff's live with the investigation. jay: what happened -- we spoke to investigator who said what happened is in settling -- unsettling. investigators believe the copilot locked himself while the pilot was likely in the restroom and then programmed the plane to fly into a mountainside, killing all 150 aboard. this development has authorities grambling for a motive. they are delving into his state of mind. >> he had a plan. he knew when the captain left he was going to make his move. he had to actively change the flight management system to direct the aircraft. jay: in general, the industry does a good job of screening pilot and self policing them. >> the type of test most airlines do, to make sure they are hiring the right types of personalities. jay: this may leave some to conclude more should be done. the tons -- the airline says there is a policy where pilots can report the problems of themselves or others without punishment. >> it hadn't been used in this case. the safety nets we are so proud of did not work in this
