for those of you who don't know about jesse, jesse was born in charles town in 1859. he was a local boy if you will. he was born with a slight defect and his right eye. his eye looked really wide and because of that people made fun of him quite a bit. his family, his schoolmates. he was abused because he looked a little bit different and he really got beaten up for that. he really got abused at school. children who are much older than him and much bigger than him really made him pay dearly for that. his own father believed that maybe he was possessed and it was some kind of a sign of the devil something terrible within him. his father really abused him terribly. so he grew up knowing quite a lot of pain and the only way that he could control that he started abusing children who are much younger and much smaller than he was. people didn't know that it was actually him doing that early on. they found in 1871 when children had crossed the street in chelsea started suffering and talking about a young boy who would brief -- befriend them and take them places, give them can

jesse pretty much gave himself up. one day while walking home from school he decided that it would be fun to walk into a police station just to see what was happening, and the open the door and walked right in. the one person that he saw, the first person that he saw was this little boy that he had just abused committee pointed a finger at him and pretty much he was done. he knew that he had given himself up. he realized that it was too late, and he was arrested and taken to juvenile. at the time the court decided that he was too young to be placed in jail so he was sent to reform school. there was a state reform school at the westborough facility. back then he was supposed to be their up to the age of 18 which was six years. he was only 12 so they realized that perhaps by keeping them there for about six years these tendencies that he had what kind of grow, he would grow out of it almost like a disease. he would feel better. that his mother was the only person who really sort of understood him try to take care of him.

jesse is stuck 16 feet down. so the plan is to dig down 20 feet with heavy ground-breaking equipment and then cut across by hand. rescuers know they need to move cautiously. >> if there would have been any further collapse, of course, in the well above his head, yes, there's a risk. and that was one of our main concerns is vibration of the ground around the opening. they shut off all traffic, stopped all traffic within 500 feet. >> my role as a rescue was to help with the shoring and the trench. and my job was also to be one of the diggers down at the bottom that actually dug across from the trench over to the well where little jesse was. >> as the operation approaches its fifth hour, 17-month-old baby jesse seems to be hanging in there, but the question everyone is asking, how much longer can he last? >> my only thought was, he's getting tired. i was worried about him maybe giving up. and i was talking to him, you know, comforting him as well as myself. >> firefighter tim daneen is working with other rescuers in

jesse? >> reporter: ted over the past hour we've received an e-mail and other information about what happened here overnight. it's still not exactly quite clear but it seems to be a consensus there was a fight as the clubs were letting out and that preceded the gunfire. philadelphia police say the shots were fired in a parking lot at black horse alley and second street in old city. three men jumped in a cadillac and raced off going the wrong way on chestnut street. they jumped on to the sidewalk nearly running over a philadelphia police officer. that officer and his partner opened fire which brought the car to a stop. a resident says a fight sparked the violence and those involved tried to escape. >> i saw a gentleman with his shirt off, it's 12 degrees outside. being encouraged strongly by five people a posse. they were fleeing the scene. i turned the corner on a sheet of ice and i heard gunshot. >> reporter: philadelphia police tow truck is now removing the cadillac from chestnut street. t

nbc 10's jesse gary is live on the scene to tell us more. jesse? >> rosemary it is under control but still burning. you can see flames continue to burn towards the rear of the structure. this has been going on since about 2:20 this morning. let's take a look at our video. you can see the flames shooting from the windows of this 65,000 square foot facility. the fire commissioner says this was once a metals manufacturing facility on the first floor and on the second floor, some type of -- another manufacturing aspect on the second floor, graphics is what i think he said. in any case there could be residual materials from those visits left inside. that, perhaps, added to the veracity of the flames. we're talking about whether it's production materials, furniture, et cetera. all of that is combustible and that could have been what kept the flames going for so long for the past four hours. two collapses to tell you about. a collapse of the roof and a partial collapse of a rear wall -- interior wall towards the back of the building. no one was injured in

nbc 10's jesse gary is live at the scene in jesse you've moved closer to where all of this ended. tell us why. >> reporter: that's right, ted. i wanted to give you a better look at the tire tracks that actually are up on to the sidewalk. you can see they go through the snow there's one and here's the other. so this is the set of tire tracks that go from chestnut up on to the sidewalk. we mention this because ted just said the suspects tried to run down a philadelphia police officer. they came right up on the sidewalk. this all started at a parking lot over at black horse alley and second street here in old city. around 2:00 in the morning. investigators say three men opened fire on one victim, then jumped in a cadillac and pulled out of that parking lot, down chestnut, went the wrng way on chestnut. i just showed you the tire tracks where they ran up on to the sidewalk tried to run over a philadelphia police officer. that officer and his partner opened fire. they ultimately arrested the three men and now they're trying to figure outç what led to this shooting, what prompted the v

jesse gary is joining us from darby township police headquarters. jesse, what have you found out? >> reporter: vai the victim's girlfriend has a protections from abuse order against her, so she's going to be arraigned on that first and then we have learned that the charges will be upgraded to include homicide. family members identified the victim as 26-year-old mark hudson. he worked part-time for the darby borough police department the past four years. and investigators say saturday afternoon he was shot in the chest with his own service weapon here in darby township. he was rushed to penn presbyterian hospital but died as a result of the gunshot. and he was also a volunteer firefighter in darby borough. his association with the department has a transforming effect on his life. >> he was a big success story for the firehouse. joining when he was 16 he's everybody's friend. he's got this infectious smile and is goofy and fun to be around. everybody at the firehouse loved him. >> reporter: the unnamed girlfriend has been hospitalized in an unrelated medical condition. so she is bei

nbc 10's jesse gary has been live on the scene in port richmond all morning long. jesse? >> reporter: rosemary those detectives arrived less than 15 minutes ago and they conducted they search and it didn't take long maybe 5, 10 minutes, tops and right before our break, you saw them get into their police cars and leave. they went inside and searched this row house right here, number 3534. i asked detective what exactly they were doing, why they came back, and they said they still had to process the scene. so some more things they had to do to completely process the scene and then leave. i'm told the young man, the 10-year-old who was shot in the thigh is in stable condition over at st. christopher's hospital. an nbc 10 camera was on scene shortly after the shot that wounded the child was fired, just before 3:00 this morning. an argument started before the boy's mother and her live-in boyfriend. that man heard someone coming down the steps from the second floor down to the first. without checking he fired one time and hit the 12-year-old in his left thigh, police say. that
