that video went viral and joe bell became a late in life celebrity, became the grand marshal of the san jose fourth of july parade last year. i had an opportunity to interview him briefly. he was very gracious, very humble and just seemed appreciative of all the appreciation he was receiving because of his actions. joe bell passed away in january but this year veterans are continuing his tradition of expressing their gratitude at the race's memorial mile. >> we ran it already. we started at the finish line, ran to the start line. we ran by once this morning. >> reporter: what you're looking at is a picture taken about 25, 30 minutes ago. this is from the race director. the race director told me this morning he put the call out to other veterans to come and be a part of that memorial mile. no one rsvps so i didn't know how many would show up but by the look of this, 30 minutes ago a dozen veterans showed to you be part -- up to be part of the tradition on the memorial mile. the race started at 8:00. the first group already went through. another group coming through. between now and 9:00
