kentucky law blocks that. it is not a particularly controversial or idealogically poll alreadizing thing. the students have a good case to make. they want to be involved in decisions that affect them as students. as such that bill quickly picked up sponsors and sailed through the kentucky house of representatives. it passed by a vote of 88-5. while that was going on in what should have been completely unrelated news at the same time a republican state senator was working on something else. he was pushing a totally unrelated, controversial bill that would mandate the use of specific bathrooms by students who are transgender. also a republican sfait state senator he at the time was pushing a bill about religious objections to things and freedom of speech. in both of those bills they stalled out in the kentucky house, the democratically controlled kentucky house. neither of them have anything to do with the high schoolers' bill but the senators saw the hool high school kids' bill sailing through the house easily

this was the scene in frankfurt, kentucky. they are holding signs, giving speeches, everybody rallying at the state capital trying to come up with something called house bill 236. it would allow a student to be part of a search committee process. kentucky law currently blocks that. the high schoolers bill is straightforward. not particularly controversial or a polarizing thing. they have a good case to make, right? they want to be involved in decisions that directly affect them as students. that bill quickly picked up sponsors and it sailed through the house of representatives by a vote of 88 to five. while that was going on, at the same time, a republican state senator maimed cb embrey was pushing a controversial use of a mandate of special bathrooms by students who are transgender. also, albert robertson was pushing a bill about religious objections to things and freedom of speech. both of those bills stalled out in the democratic controls kentucky house. none of them have anything to do with the high schoolers bill. and tho

this is probably i-65 central kentucky. last night, around 11:00 is when many people began reporting the problems. the weather turned to snow and lots of it. several feet two feet in many areas, and you've got a combination of heavy traffic, a combination of heavy snow and then on top of that topography. so where there were hills, trucks slowed down. once people slowed down the snow just bogged them down. the plows couldn't get through to clear the roadways and you end up with what -- highways that became parking lots. you have hundreds of people now trapped. they have made progress. the national guard is out there, the crews have been working to get the plows in people have been rescued, and depending on where you are, the situation is some people reporting to us hey, we're finally on the move. others are saying we're still stuck. the problem tonight? it's going to get cold very cold. if anyone is out of fuel and still stuck in their car, potentially dangerous. again, the governor says they are making progress. if you are

smo an ice causingsnow and ice cause ago nightmare situation in kentucky. this is a stretch along i-65. some of these drivers stranded in their cars or their big rigs some 200 big rigs we are told are along this road as well. they have been there more than 12 hours and this line stretches well beyond a mile. the national guard has been dispatched to help rescue some of these stranded drivers. our martin savidge is staying on top of developments from atlanta. martin how long have these people than stranded? >> some says 6:00 6:30 last night. most people say it seemed to bog down around 11:00 last night. we have good news for us at least a positive glimmer and that is that the national guard of kentucky is reporting that they had been rescuing people and taking them to warming shelters. now that process is starting to go to the reverse. in other words taking people from shelters back to their vehicles. that suggests that they have made progress on opening the roadways and you need to get the drivers back in the vehicles to get them on the move. so it sounds g
