altera is a faster grower. reporting earnings in a couple of weeks, perhaps we'll get a sign to the health of the business. perhaps more sign why it was willing to reject an offer that valued over 20 times ebitda. low 20 multiple on ebitda. that being said that moved back up, and share of altera perhaps, investors expected to pressure the company to sit back down with intel. no signs that i was able to garner that intel would be willing to do that though one has to imagine, given its willingness to pay, perhaps as much as $54, it would be willing to, if ailltera were to face some insurrection. that has to be the reason why the stock has come back so sharply, having been down originally 8%. >> the whole thing feeds the argument we hear again and again, we were sitting here when they warned on revenue, now when the market or were for a big deal average lap global companies struckling for growth and looking to m&a as the answer? >> no doubt about it. many of the things have been in place for a long time megastrong

some of the same businesses that altera is in. also that based on what intel is, it's got this advanced manufacturing process and the kinds of programmable semiconductors that altera does, are able to take advantage of that in a ways other methods haven't been. seems like intel needs to own something like this because they can get margin on the foundry business down the line a lot better. i wonder to they end up coming back to this, end up taking a look at any of these rivals also? >> i think you can say given their willingness to consider large acquisitions they may take a look at others. they certainly believe strategically this was the right property for them. they were willing to pay what many would argue was quite a price. i'm not certain where altera was in terms of price. was it 60, a bit below that, but whatever it was the gap was large enough that after quite a long time of trying to get something done intel said you know what, it's not going to happen. >> i guess three, four years ago altera got near 50 bucks. maybe they

intel, altera. what does the options market tell us? >> options markets say broad com and a host of others have activity, even before david faber came out with this that they haven't been in talks for over a week. but the options activity in broad com was very strong. strong in a number of these other -- and by the way, broad com is twice as big a deal as this one would be and then some. because it's 25 billion versus 12. and altera just got that jump when the news was broken. >> if you charted both of them, how you see the two of them just opposite moves on the day. and now right out of the blocks, out of david faber's report, you see altera drop down. and then people start to speculate is activist going to come in? what price is activist going to turn in? they wanted $60 a share. so if an activist comes in, guys are floating around saying maybe it's a $55 number in the stock. which i am definitely in that camp. i think altera goes much higher here. >> faber said it was going to be in the low 50s. >> they have not been good. the last q

intel is in talks to buy altera. and talks to buy is probably the key word here. that's probably what the bought if indeed it was an algorithm or a news reading bot that reacted to this, talks to buy altera. when you see, that somebody could react of course to that but it would take them several seconds. number one, to digest it, number two, to enter a trade. in the same second we saw trades going off 37 take a look at these. this is the 36 calls. look at these calls trading for 35 cents, skruj. the stock's basically 35 bucks a share give or take in that same second. by the way, you do see some pretty wide fluctuations in that same second. >> we're literally talking about a second worth of time. >> we're talking about a second. faster than that click right there. >> same thing. 37 calls. these were the large blocks. for instance, about 1,500 of these traded in large blocks and another 2,700 of the 36 calls trade td in large blocks. the stock immediately gapped up -- well, not immediately. it took several minutes, but it ran up, judge, to $45 a share. so if you're

by purchasing stock options of a tech company called altera, right after a reporter tweeted that the company might be in talks with intel a potential buyout. good timing? skill? something else? tom frost? >> well, first of all, let's be really clear about this it does not appear it was insider trading because it was public information once that "wall street journal," that reporter tweeted that. but let's not forget the point that we're only talking about this because the trader made $2.4 million. he did put $110,000 of his own money down he could have well lost. we wouldn't be having this discussion now. liz: it was a nanosecond after the journal tweeted, this, bob. i'm sure it will be looked at. there is such a thing as lucky timing. >> there is also such things in automated intelligent trading where you have a lot of people spend a lot of money on systems that will read tweets, read news, interpret them, natural language recognition and execute a trade right away. that might account for the millisecond timing right there. liz: they will sift through the tweets. they will aggregate

we told you that according to people familiar, intel ended intentions to take over altera. it is old and on to some of the advanced. investors are still betting that intel is not totally dead. it did not really give up that much ground and it still climbed as much as five point 2% yesterday. people still thinking a deal could be attractive at that level. perhaps they could be pressured into reconsidering. netflix shares are moving. the best day since january after an upgrade from citigroup. analysts there see an opportunity. they say the current valuation reflects reasonable multiples and little to nothing for other international markets. they're pretty positive on the content lineup for 2015 and recently released content. i am looking forward to orange is the new black. alix: ima house of cards girl. meanwhile, relations between the u.s. and cuba continue to normalize. the state department we did a picture of john kerry shaking hands with cuba's foreign. that meeting came in advance of the summit of the americas in panama with the arrival of the cuban president and obama.
