the story of gm's victims is tragic. no less so because the company can't claim to be author of current success. it was nearly seven years ago detroit executives flew to washington, to beg, beg for taxpayer dollars to save them from bankruptcy. they asked for $25 billion. gm alone, ended up getting close to $51 billion. and still went to bankruptcy court. so this company wouldn't be even in business except for taxpayers. they want to maintain the illusion that the gm of the groveling executives you saw seven years ago, and ones now are two entirely different companies. they are not. gm should stand by the people who made its existence possible and face the american families that have been hurt by their product. we'll be right back. the real question that needs to be asked is "what is it that we can do that is impactful?" what the cloud enables is computing to empower cancer researchers. it used to take two weeks to sequence and analyze a genome; with the microsoft cloud we can analyze 100 per day. whatever i can do to he

gm's orion plant is state of the art, at least for now. cleaner and brighter it's a better place to work, even if it's where fewer humans are needed. but is it profiting? gm hopes for a 15-20% rate of return on its plants. it usually takes at least 12 months before you're running at full speed and running everything to maximum efficiency. gm is probably close at winsfield and lake orion to achieving those returns. financially, is it starting to pay off? yes, the time it takes to build a car in that new plant is less than in our old plant. our bet that we could become more productive is paying off. many felt gm had to build plants like orion. it was modernize or be run over by the auto business of the 1980s. how does gm, or any business decide what will be profitable? we asked economic analyst richard gill. essentially what gm had to do in considering this investment was to compare the expected rate of return with the cost of money needed to finance the investment-- the interest rate. how does one calculate this expected rate of return? let

by the time the depression started in 1929, sloan and gm had overtaken ford. the model t was history. ford brought out a new car the model a, that offered colors and options like gm cars did but it was too late, ford had to settle for second place then for third place behind the new company of former gm executive walter chrysler. we live in a world of change but not all that much has changed in the auto industry since general motors pushed ford from command. gm is still in first and consumers still watch the advertising and choose among cars that vary more in color and cachet than in costs. when economists talk about supply and demand, they're usually talking about price competition. but the battle between general motors and ford wasn't over who had the lowest price. we asked economic analyst richard gill if that holds for the rest of the economy. what you have in the case of the american automobile dustry especially in recent years is competition between a relatively small number of firms. we don't have a monopoly which means a single firm in control of the i

the automotive industry, as you write about so wonderfully in the book -- going up against gm is a tough effort. you still think there is a lot of innovation to be had in the battery cars? steve: yes, i think that the fact that apple and google, and then richard branson -- they are attempting to be in the space. that google is in the space is a very good sign for producing the super battery. they are better than gm and doing this. there are two pillars of creating a commercial super battery. one is discovery in the lab. the other is genius and manufacturing. that is what they have. producing design products that consumers want to buy. they have that sizzle. getting them out into the market, owning the product after it has been invented in the lab. emily: how far off is the day i do not have to charge my phone multiple times a day, or have to worry about it losing charge in the middle of the day? steve: this is the main thing i think that most people worry about. they are so upset. i just flew in from minneapolis. minneapolis five chicago. you go through the airport. everyone is looking a
