carolyn tyler is live in berkeley city hall with more on that. carolyn? >> hi, dan. you know they call it a soda tax, but it's not just for soda. it's for anything with liquid sugar so that means frappucchino frappucchinos, energy drink, sweet teas and things like that. they gathered at city hall and said implementation has been going very smoothly. at bob's liquors the manager says the soda tax is hurting business. city voters overwhelmingly axe proved a penny for all tax on sugary beverages. >> we see the difference and now the customers don't want to add that extra money on the taxes on the same time. they started complaining about it. >> reporter: city officials are cheering and they have their first data from march, $113,000 putting them on pace to collect as much as $1.5 million this year. >> it's good to have a solid indication of proceeds with not everyone paying the tax yet and it's just the large distributor. the money is earmarked for public health with half going to the school district. some of it likely to the cooking and gardening program like this bonn

carolyn tyler joins us from the scene tonight. carolyn? >> cheryl it is heartbreaking. that growing memorial right there represents what muni says is its first fatality of the year, but we talked to lots of neighbors who say there have been lots of close calls at this busy intersection. >> he was rushing to catch the muni train to school and it ended up costing him his life. the victim 12-year-old andrew wu was running in the cross walk across san jose avenue. a car and an suv braked suddenly to avoid him. >> it's not clear how but the boy did make a pivot move off of the secondary vehicle and as a result landed in the street where the lrv was traveling. wu was pinned beneath the train he was trying to take to the middle school. workers across the street heard his mother's screams and one saw her desperate effort to save him. >> she was trying to move the train, actually and she was trying to pull him out from under the train because she saw him moving. >> the distraught father was also there and as the memorial to andrew wu grows, his friends remember him. >> a stop li

demonstrators there not happy with the way that the country is holding it's elections carolyn malone has more. pro test tors threw stones and set fire to tires to try to keep security forces away. some have appeals to the president for an end to the fighting. she tries to bring peace to the country. people are being killed every day, and some others are wounded. the police sent in reinforcements. they say some of the demonstrations were organized without official approval. gunfire was heard and some people were hit. the government said it is not clear who is to blame. we regret to say there are victims of targeted shooting among the population, but no one can say that those bullets have comment from security officers. that's why we demand that the opposition comes to it's senses and returns to the table, so we request all find a solution. there have been a number of protests since march since the election was announced it would be in october, and local elections next year. the opposition says that goes against a promise to hold long delayed local elections first. we continue because
