i have chad myers with me. i know we need to talk about the forecast but just reacting to that and imagine first of all you're watching your home engulfed by flood waters like that. you're seeing your car. you can't get in your car. you're stuck on the second floor of the home with nothing to do but watching it and crossing your fingers. >> and they're lucky the house stayed on its foundation. >> right. >> because so many people's houses did not stay on the foundation. they were gone and they were washed completely down the river. and they're lucky to be alive by clinging to trees. the people there as they were climbing up and up i could only think about new orleans, how people were climbing through their attic and breaking through. this was rushing water. the force of that rushing water is tremendous. >> looking ahead to the next couple days when you hear that they could be getting a couple inches of rain that's still a really really big deal. >> it is because the storms that we have now, brooke probably won't

rodriguez, it's chad myers. let me just talk to you about the rain and how it came in and maybe even people that didn't get very much rain like this area. you don't know it's coming because the rain was uphill. the rain was in the hill country, and it came right to you. that flameood came in from places where you didn't even know it was raining. was it scary to think you have no way out of there? >> it was. because when we left our first instinct was to drive back to san marcos to get out that way. we couldn't. as soon as we crossed the bridge to get into san marcos passing the blanco river, it was -- i mean san marcos was completely flooded. all three streets that you're able to go into through the back, through river road and straight down through 21 which turns into i think, i don't know. but yeah they were all flooded. everybody was parked at a local convenience store to the left right across from walmart. it just kind of seemed pointless to be there when the water was going to continue to rise. so we headed

joining us, meteorologist chad myers. as you look at these pictures and these aerial images of van, texas. what can you tell about the size and path of this storm? >> i'm looking at what i think to be an ef-3 tornado there. weather service will be out looking at the damage later on today to determine what it really was. now, you can't tell what the damage or the strength of a tornado by looking at a car or by looking at a trailer or by looking at anything made of aluminum or a tin roof or aluminum shed. those things come apart quickly. it's the sound, stick, brick homes that weather service will go out and see how many damage occurred there. what i see there is a damage path of less than half a mile. that's good news. all the homes there although this one here flattened, a lot of them to the left of that picture still standing. and to the right of the picture still standing. we don't know the length of the path but probably less than a quarter mile. more like two blocks or three blocks. >> chad, that house -- the roof of

joining me now, cnn meteorologist chad myers. it's just hard to believe that another earthquake of that magnitude struck nepal that soon. >> likely induced by the other earthquake. i heard it called the aftershock. it's right along the same fault. this is kind of how it works. the plate has been crashing for millions of years. and that's why we have the mountains there in the first place. that's why mt. everest exists. here you go. here's the earthquake today. here's the earthquake a couple weeks ago. here's kathmandu. and just to give you an idea right up through here is the trek all of the way up to mt. everest. this earthquake was closer toest everest than the last one. farther you get away from the epicenter, the lighter the shaking is but kathmandu really got hit here. and here's what we're seeing. we're seeing this topography created by the crashing plates getting pushed up into the mountains. and very very rugged terrain through here. as these landslides that we've been seeing have continued for most of the day, these land

cnn chief meteorologist chad myers here with more for you. good morning, chad. >> good morning, carol. dozens of reports of tornadoes over the weekend. and hundreds of reports of wind damage and power lines down and hail and they continue right now but the rain in parts of texas was one drought helping, not drought breaking but drought helping but also flooding. south of dallas that's 11 inches of rainfall just in 48 hours along the red river, everywhere that you see white was ten inches of rain or more in about 72 hours. and it's still raining in some parts. we're going to get severe weather from detroit all the way down to texas again. it's cold and dry in the west. even cold and white in parts of colorado. had some snow over the weekend. but here you go this is the warm air. this is the muggy. this is the frizzy hair kind of day that we're going to see across the deep south. when you get the humidity down here like we have we will see severe weather pop up and right now we still have some strong weather here across parts of texas. even tho

let's get to cnn's meteorologist chad myers with more. what are you seeing chad? >> alisyn what i'm seeing with this next line of storms is it may move across in a horizontal fashion. as it moves across this way it keeps moving making 1-inch to 2-inch rainfalls. not the 8 to 10 inches we saw over houston, not the training type rainfall that we had. so yes, rain all the way from new york all the way back down to texas. but the biggest bullseye for the next seven days is over oklahoma. it's two to four inches you can take that as long as it's slow. slow rain showers moving over the area finally passing on by. it's going to be hot across the northeast. d.c. 90 degrees or above about every single day for the rest of this week. and the heat is on across the southeast as well. it will be the beginning of summer is what i'm predicting right now. >> all right, chad thanks so much for that. we appreciate it. >>> breaking overnight, an international soccer scandal rocks the world. top soccer officials arrested in switzerland including the vice president of fifa the sports g

let's head to atlanta with chad myers to tell us more about that. hi chad. >> carol, truly a dramatic night in houston where rainfall came down two to four inches. some spots almost six inches of rain per hour. it rained all night. this is the estimated rainfall from the radar. even at about 8:00 only about four to six inches but put this into motion and by midnight there are spots with 10 inches of rainfall on the ground from this one storm and that's really less than about 6 inches. so anywhere in the country if you get 10 inches of rainfall in six hours is going to flood. look at this unprecedented. this is eight feet. this is where water was eight feet deep. two hours later it was 36.5 feet deep. all of a sudden that water comes up so fast people couldn't get out of the way and there are still cars obviously in that floodwater right now. later on today we are going to see the rainfall move through new orleans and then into mississippi and alabama and even into georgia. here we go here for today, this afternoon into tonight. montgomery birmingham

i also have chad myers here with me to walk through all this as well. first, roesarosa let's go to you. you're in houston watching this whole cleanup process. as you're talking to all these people how many people actually have flood insurance? >> reporter: you know it's tough for folks here. there's about 1400 structures in houston that have been impacted. all those are people. people that are now in their homes with a lot of water damage. i want to show you the power of the water and the surge specifically. this is what made this particular storm so dangerous. take a look right over here. this is all debris from a bayou that's about 200 feet from where i'm standing. you can see the surge coming through, pushing through those cars and into homes. i talked to the owner of this particular house. she tells me it was about 2:00 in the morning. the water started rising. her family started jumping on the counters of her kitchen to stay dry. they have two dogs. they put the dogs on top of the dinner table in order to keep the dogs dry. i want to show you here

i want to bring in chad myers. they were not expecting this round of rain. >> i think what we have here now is a greenhouse effect. not like we think about global warming and that. you have so much moisture on the ground, the sun comes in, hits it, and evaporates and hits outflow boundary or another front and it rains again. it was supposed to rain in new orleans today and it's going to but not in houston. let me show you what happened just in the past couple of hours. there's houston. there's the rainfall right along i-10. this is happening again and it's happening not that far from san marcos. we have so much moisture on the ground that all of a sudden it can rain at any time in places where we don't need any rain at all. we don't need rain in houston and we got most of it to the north. guess which way the water goes in houston? north to south into the gulf of mexico. we showed you this here earlier. rain about two to three inches in parts of houston. what happens to these bayous all of the way here? we have from

let's check in with our severe weather expert our meteorologist chad myers. what is the forecast, chad? >> more training thunderstorms. and let me explain what that means. think about a train on the same track. every car goes over the exact same place. now think of i-10 as that train track. i'm going back you up until 6:00 on monday. about to get a basketball game going in houston. nothing on the radar really. now all of the sudden look at this. this is 9:00 p.m. the game is starting. the rain is starting. and now we'll watch it go from 9:00 to 11:00. still pouring. 11:00 to 1:00 still raining. from 11:00 to 3:00 still going. so you said earlier, 10 inches 12 inches of rainfall in 24 hours. wolf it was 10 inches of rainfall in six hours. these people were trapped because it was nighttime. they didn't see it coming. people were driving into the waters. they had no idea how deep that water was. by the time it was done from houston back over to about sugar land there was 8 to 10 inches. and everywhere that is white, that's a 10-inch rainfall in those six hours h

let's get right to meteorologist chad myers. chad this is an el nino year. i thought that meant we were supposed to get kind of a pass on the hurricane side. >> it doesn't mean pass just means maybe a lesser season than normal. here's ana, she just can't get her stuff together. but it's still going to have a 45-mile-an-hour storm, it is still a tropical like wind 45 miles per hour but it doesn't have the characteristics. it's not going to get an eye. it's not going to become a tropical storm or hurricane before it makes landfall later on this week. but if you're on the beach you'll see some waves, rip currents and the like. back to the west here's the bigger story, especially for tomorrow and today. there will be significant severe weather this afternoon in parts of oklahoma and texas. same story tomorrow. popping up through oklahoma city moore, norman places that don't need more severe weather. it's already had enough this week already. here we go oklahoma city wichita, down to dallas where severe weather pops up this week. for tomorrow this is the big day.

let's get right to meteorologist chad myers for what they're looking at. chad. >> couple things going on. the ground is saturated. there's no place for it to soak in. and there's not that much ground in the first place. talk to the people in austin texas about how their basement is. they don't have one. at least not very many because they're right on bedrock, right on limestone. when you get rain it just runs right off. oklahoma city same story. i lived in ed mond no basement there. i'd love to have one, tornado alley, but you don't get it. there's showers in oklahoma city right now. more rain across dallas today. and i'm concerned that a small little frontal system right through, little outflow boundary as we call it could set up over dallas and make more rainfall and more flooding just like benbrook had last night. flooding about 10:00 last night rain showers just wouldn't stop raining. wouldn't move. the storm stayed in the same exact spot. and it could do the same thing today. wichita falls all the way down to i would say almost del rio texas you're go

let's get right to meteorologist chad myers with all of the forecast. what are you seeing, chad? >> alisyn you put me on your show and things are about to get real. big storms in oklahoma and texas. there they are right now. they will redevelop back out here in the plains and move right back into the same areas. oklahoma city dallas all the way up into parts of wichita, kansas as well. there's the weather for today. and it doesn't move for the next three days. weather in the same spots, severe weather, probably a lot of chasers out there again today. you need to be very careful. noaa radio on a pickup truck does not make you a storm chaser. watch out today. there will be storms firing up today, tomorrow saturday and even into sunday. one more thing off the east coast, not the first named storm but the first tropicalish system of the year. nothing there going on yet. but it could make a rough surf kind of weekend for parts of the carolinas and for florida. if you like that kind of thing, could be a lot of fun. if you don't, please stay out of the water. rip currents will be all ov

let's get right to meteorologist chad myers. it's all about advance warning and people being able to simply get lucky in some of these situations. what do we see now, chad? >> you bet. today is a good day. it is a decent day in the plains. they'll be a couple showers and storms around south texas and even the east coast, but it gets bad again tomorrow. and saturday and sunday look just like big tornadoes through the plains. again, we're back in this pattern. even tomorrow afternoon look at this. this is wednesday afternoon. showers, storms in texas. and then big weather all the way through texas, oklahoma into kansas. that's wednesday. it takes a break on thursday. takes a break on friday. now, it's still going to rain a lot. we're still going to see six to ten inches of rainfall where they kind of need rain. but the setup for the weekend is really getting extreme. grand island wichita, oklahoma city down into dallas and all the way down to del rio, texas, that's the bogey, the bullseye for severe weather this weekend. waking up

cnn meteorologist chad myers joins us now with the forecast. what are we expecting, chad? >> more rain on top of places that already had six inches of rainfall including myrtle beach. not much of a beach vacation this weekend. the rain continues across eastern carolina and all day long. we'll get rain up towards hampton roads, but the big story is how much rainfall six to ten inches of rain came down and here's what the water looked like when this storm came onshore. i understand it's only a tropical storm, 45 to 50 miles per hour but you can't be in that kind of water, because that type of surf can rip you back out to the ocean in those rip currents that we always talk about. a beach vacation in myrtle beach didn't look so good this week. the greens were soft safe to say, six to eight inches of rainfall in that community over the weekend and it continues to move to the north, not northeast, eventually offshore bring some showers to philadelphia to d.c. maybe baltimore, but just showers. chris, i know it's early in the season last time we had a really big ana early in the

let's get right to meteorologist chad myers. we know that the storm front was going to move but what is happening right now? >> i know it's only 5:26 in dallas right now, but if you're heading out the door know many roadways are flooded today, this morning from garland back to plano. and still a flash flood warning for most of dallas and ft. worth. i know i-20 was closed for a while. many roads around dallas this morning are covered in water. a lot of rainfall still happening now. there's dallas. here's ft. worth. there's the area that rained so hard. this is rainfall accumulation so from garland to plano up to about allen, texas over six inches of rainfall. and it is still raining in some spots. this is a storm that developed overnight in west texas, rolled through the eastern part of the state and right over dallas. it's exactly what we expect to happen again tonight. another mass of clouds will develop right over here. and it will come right back into dallas for about 5:00 tomorrow morning. we'll be talking about the exact sa

so i hope that's not the situation for meteorologist chad myers this morning. >> yes. i'm afraid if you live in st. louis or chicago you don't want to even listen to this. it's raining all weekend. for you not bad. the northeast pretty good. still showers in texas. still flooding there. the flood watches and warnings continue. last seven days everywhere that's red or purple 4 to 6 inches of rainfall. in some spots 10 inches of rainfall. ft. smith you have now surpassed your greatest monthly record for rainfall of any may of any time since there's been a little rock since there's been an oklahoma city. all those areas now for hundreds of years of records finally seeing this wettest may. rain showers for the northeast today, but they move away. in fact the northeast gets a really nice weekend. in fact a hot one too. monday if you're going to take the day off as well we'll be here it will be very hot. temperatures in new york city could approach 90 there. look at d.c. by sunday. all the way to 86. that hot air is headed up for your holiday weekend. >> wow. thanks chad so

. >> isn't that interesting, chad myers, our meteorologist giving us a forecast of this holiday weekend. how does it look for people hitting the road? >> for the northeast i don't think it could be better. for the midwest flood warnings. it's a tale of a couple different countries here. the rain moving out of the northeast now it will be gone soon. but the rain not moving out of the midwest not until monday or tuesday. flash flood watches, warnings all the way through oklahoma texas and even into parts of kansas. look at this through sunday some spots from wichita to kansas city and oklahoma city will pick up 4 to 8 inches of rain. that's just in the next three days. and then look at the northeast. not a drop. sunshine the entire time. i know all sunshine and no rainfall makes a desert and i haven't even started planting my tomatoes yet. i don't know what chris is doing. but it's time to plant. sun is out, no more frost across the country and the rain will help you. but you don't need that kind of rain for your sunday picnic i'm afraid. it could be quite wet. nice days in new york d.c.
