weather channel meteorologist mike seidel is in dallas tonight. mike what can you tell us? >> reporter: good evening, kate. tornado watches are up from missouri to indiana. some of the same areas impacted by the horrible flash flooding. as the rain gauges fill up the records are falling. more than a foot of rain in oklahoma city. the wettest may on record. some spots picked up two inches of rain. some of this has fallen in four weeks. more of this on memorial day and with the ground super saturated it won't take much for flash flooding to kick back in. there's a threat for severe storms in texas with a chance of a few tornados. holiday weather on the east coast and west coast. the weather, spots that have already had 15 inches of rain in may could see another 3-5 inches and because of the clouds and rain so far in dallas-fort worth, they have yet to hit 90 degrees. this is five weeks later than average. another impact expect a bumper of month quitos quitos -- mosquitos. >> thanks so much. tonight cleveland, ohio on edge after the court acquitted a police officer in the shoo

>> reporter: that's right, alison, we are under a severe thunderstorm watch in the dallas area, and we also learned north of here in denton county, there is a tornado warning, so people there are taking cover and being careful, keeping the eyes on skies. the violent storms that we saw just two hours west of where we are in eastland county texas, that's where we heard of one confirmed tornado. that tornado tore through cisco, texas, killing one person and critically injuring another, and there are downed power lines and street flooding in the down pea. we also know there were confirmed tornados in colorado and kansas, so yesterday was a very difficult day in terms of violent weather throughout this area. today, again, there is the threat for more severe weather in this area, so we are definitely keeping an eye on the skies and making sure that everybody is safe, alison. >> we want you to be safe as you continue your work there under the thunderstorm threat there in texas. >>> 32 million people could be in the path of severe weather today, and don't forget the tropical storm hitting the

that just outside dallas this morning. we have the latest on the attack and why police were so quick to respond. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. it is monday may 4th. christine romans is on assignment this morning. breaking overnight in garland, texas. serious questions and concerns. two men pulled up outside a venue holding a contest drawing cartoons of the prophet muhammad. the men jumped out of the car and started shooting. a security guard was injured before police officers shot and killed the gunmen. we have cnn's ed lavandera with more. >> reporter: john the shooting erupted just about ten minutes before the art exhibit and cartoon contest was to be wrapped up. it is not known if the organizers were the ones targeted. that is the suspicion that law enforcement is operating under. there was a great deal of law enforcement present around the event. we are told in the back of the building there was a s.w.a.t. team on stand by in case anything like this was to erupt. we are told by law enforcemen

this is what it look like near dallas overnight. a flurry of lightning bolts lighting up the night sky. the same area is getting pounded with downpours. you can see the rain coming down in sheets. >> the worst yet to come for low-lying towns downstream. many families living along the water packed up. the swollen rivers and lakes may not return to normal levels until some time in july. >> we could expect to see more scenes like this one. firefighters in oklahoma here working around the clock, pulling off one dramatic water rescue after another. for more we turn to accuweather meteorologist justin povick. justin good morning. >> t.j. and reena, thanks and good morning. we're almost at the weekend. more showers and thunderstorms over oklahoma and texas. i know i sound like a broken record. this is the pattern we have been stuck in all month long. some good news this weekend. mayb and cincinnati as well as pittsburgh on saturday. could have gusty thunderstorms. sunday looks like the i-95 corridor's turn with some travel delays as well.

today a complex of pretty strong thunderstorms between san antonio and the dallas area. damaging winds possible and maybe even isolated tornadoes and of course the torrential rains with the super saturated soil when this goes through areas like dallas and waco we could see significant flash flooding. there's nowhere for the water to go. it quickly runs off. our computers are estimates between 3 to 2 inches in san antonio and dallas. that is bad news. oklahoma city looks a lot better. we get another 2 to 3 inches of rain on top of the pictures you just saw, that water is not gone. it's still there. and everyone on the eastern seaboard is looking fantastic. >> scary stuff. those people have been battered so far. zblit took a bomb squad to deal with a scary situation in washington d.c. police found an unattended vehicle and after a closer look they found a pressure cooker and the odor of gasoline. a perimeter was set and the bomb squad came in to detonate what they called items of concern in the car. a followup search did not detect anything hazards by police found the driv

. >>> severe weather in texas has caused flooding across that state and in sanger, texas, near dallas two people caught in the middle of raging floodwaters had to be rescued from ttohe p of that pickup truck. a helicopter airlifted the pair to safety and elsewhere in the state the national guard has been called in to make more rescues. >>> rough weather pounded the great plains in the midwest today. tornadoes whipped through texas and south dakota. strong storms have shaken residents in counties surrounding dallas with some people needing rescued from severe flooding. don champion reports from texas tonight. >> reporter: there is a deluge in denton county, texas. blackhawk choppers airlifted people from the raging floodwaters to safety. cars are submerged in places with people wading through hip deep water and animals are stranded, too. tornadoes were also reported in communities just outside of dallas sunday. >> you need to take your tornado precautions at this time. >> reporter: saturday a tornado with winds up to 165 miles per hour hit the ranching community of cisco, texas. one pe

engineers racing to stop this dam southwest of dallas from briefing. workers placing heavy equipment right on top of the dam, pumping 15,000 gallons of water per minutes from swollen lake padera as fast as they can. officials warning residents to prepare for the worst and move livestock to higher ground. after days of record breaking rains across the region, all that water draining into lakes and bayous. tonight, the fear that other dams will soon reach maximum height. there are over 7,300 just in texas and according to a recent study, more than 200 aging dams are vulnerable. this dam burst monday. more than 35 million gallons of water sent barrelling down the creek. and david, tonight, workers are placing sandbags across the overflow area to keep the water at bay. but with two to four inches of rain expected in the area in the coming days this dam, along with so many others across the state, dangerously vulnerable. david? >> all right, watching that dam into the evening. phillip, thank you. let's get right to ginger zee, who has the storm track at thi
