[laughter] dr. carson: my mother was working extraordinarily hard two, sometimes three jobs as a time -- at a time as a domestic, trying to stay off of welfare. the reason for that is that she noticed that most of the people who saw go on welfare never came off of it and she did not want to be dependent. she us to be independent. she would work as long and hard as necessary leaving at 5:00 in the morning and getting back after midnight, day after day doing what people did not want to do to maintain her independence. and she was very thrifty. she would drive a car until it would not make a sound. and then she would collect all of her dimes and nickels and quarters and buy a new car. people would say, how does that woman afford a new car? she knew how to manage money. my mother was the secretary of treasury, we would not

[applause] dr. carson: sometimes we don't find that. they said it was a rough-and-tumble place. they said it was a rough-and-tumble place but i lost two teeth. i had a chance to see to find dentists here. many people have asked me how is my mother doing? i appreciate the sentiment. right after my announcement on monday i flew down to where she is. my wife and my three sons, and she is in a terminal stages of alzheimer's. and has stopped eating and drinking. but so many of you have been praying for her. one lady said she had a group of 2200 people praying for my mother. for the last three days she has been eating again. [applause] dr. carson: i just want to thank you. they do mean a lot. speaking of my mother, she has the greatest influence other than jesus christ on my life. she refused to be a victim. she has every reason to be a victim. born in a large family in rural ten

[applause] dr. carson: this is a direct appeal to media. you guys have an almost sacred position in a true democracy. please don't abuse it. [applause] dr. carson: my mother's dream was for us to move back to detroit and we were eventually able to do that. i was a terrible student. my brother was a terrible student. she did not know what to do. so she prayed. she asked god for wisdom. you know what? you don't have to have a phd to talk to god. you just have to have faith. god gave her the wisdom. my brother and i did not think it was that wise. [laughter] dr. carson: turning off the tv and making us read books and turn into her written book reports which she could not read. but it worked. i started reading about people of accomplishment. i started to recognize that the person who has to do the most with what happens in your life is you. it is not somebody else. you do not have to be dependent on the good graces of somebody else. you can do it on your round if you have a normal brain and you are willing to work and you are willing to have th

[applause] dr. carson: we had a vigorous argument. i suggested maybe we can resolve it at the level of the supreme court, which seemed bold and reckless. it really wasn't. i knew the next week i was going to the supreme court to receive the jefferson award. i figured i would ask while i was there. sandra day o'connor say they were with us. there was no violation. people who say silly stuff like that, what do they know about our country? our founding document talks about certain unalienable rights given to us by our creator, the pledge of allegiance says we are one nation under god. many courtrooms say in god we trust. every coin in our pocket. if it is in our founding documents, it is in our pledge it is in our court, it is on our money. we are not supposed to talk about it. what and the world is that? in medicine, we call the schizophrenia. carson! >> and joining me now dr. ben carson presidential candidate. dr. carson great to see you. congratulations on your announcement and what an incredible story that i think many people may not have known had they not read your book. let's start with what happened with your father. he was a bigomist and your mother left him, or they separated when she found out. how did that affect you? >> well obviously i was devastated. as any child would be. and prayed every night, please help them to get back together. not really realizing why the divorce had taken place. and it was really some years later before my mother really gave us the full story of what had happened because she didn't want to demonize him in our eyes. >> did you ever see him again? >> yes. the last time i saw him was the day that i got married. he died many years ago. >> wow. and did you ever have any contact with the other family? >> i did, but i didn't know who they were. >> wow. >> so sometimes on sunday morning he would take us and we would visit these people. i didn't really know who they were until much later.

dr. carson when you say all options, does that include the use of military force? >> all options includes all options. that doesn't mean that would be my first option. when we look at russia and we look at putin, we can realize that he has great ambitions. his ambitions have been thwarted of late because of falling oil prices. and we should take note of that and realize that the economic weapon is a tremendous one in his case. we have incredible natural resources in this country in terms of oil, in terms of natural gas but we have energy exportation rules from the '70s when we had an energy crisis that need to be gotten rid of. we can use that to make europe and other portions of the world more dependent on us. and that decreases his influence and his ability to expand. >> let me follow up. you say all options all options. under what circumstances would president carson be willing to go to war with russia? what are your red lines? >> well, i would, obviously, do that in consultation with very competent generals and people who are more knowledgeable in that area tha

joining us now is dr. ben carson. with your unique perspective, being a local and also a physician, medically, what do you think happened? what could have happened? >> i think putting all this together and i haven't seen the records, but from what i've been able to hear that when he was arrested he was put on the ground and somebody's knee went into the back of his neck. now, this was not an intentional injury. this was a way of subduing the suspect. that probably produced the instability, and then by putting him in a van and having him rattle around that's when the spinal cord injury occurred. >> you also said doctor you were happy to see the prosecutor marilyn mosby coming out sooner rather than later. she's been criticized for that. why do you say that? >> because tensions were mounting. this is clearly something went wrong here. there's no question about that. people don't develop spontaneous trauma of this nature to the spine, so that was just going to fester and create more discord and violence and that we don't

what do you think about dr. carson and his chances? >> look he right now, is well known to a degree to those who watch fox news. he's done very well in the sort of fox news -- >> a contributor. >> in the primary. so he is well known in that sense among the republican base. he is a world-class pediatric neurosurgeon. and he is not a washington. all of those things serve him well. on the other side wolf he may not be of washington but he has never held elected office. he has no legislative executive political national security experience and so i think he's going to have a hard time in this field overcoming that. he's in the second tier of the polls. he can move up and down. everybody in these races gets their 15 minutes of face, right? i assume ben carson will have it. he's spent time apologizes for stupid things he said like prisoners who go into jail sometimes come out gay and had to apologize for that. he's got a long way to go. >> he was one of the most brilliant pediatric surg bes at johns hopkins university hospital in baltimore.
