abc's kendis gibson is right there. >> reporter: tonight, a massive cleanup effort under way on one of southern california's most popular beaches. >> this oil spill affects all of us. this is a disaster and a worst nightmare scenario. >> reporter: this pristine shoreline now an oily mess after a onshore pipeline near santa barbara ruptured on tuesday. before the line was shut off, as much as 105,000 gallons of oil flowed down this drain and into the ocean. the desperate efforts to save wildlife captured in this photo. whales swimming right into the spill. out here in the ocean you can see exactly where the oil entered the water. you see all that black stuff there on the rocks where the worker is standing? that's where it exited a storm drain. the spill coming just days ahead of memorial day. came persons who booked their spot at this state park up to a year ago now forced to evacuate. david, tonight, take a look at this. the sand on this beach still laden with thick, gooey oil. we're told by officials cleanup could take several weeks. david? >> all right, kendis thank you. >>> this eve

kendis gibson with the story tonight. >> reporter: tonight, as workers in protective gear continue the beach cleanup, swift, tough action against the operators of that busted santa barbara pipeline. the federal government ordering plains american pipeline to suspend operations on the ruptured line, giving the company 45 days to remove and test the part of the pipe that failed. >> we have yet to find the actual release point. at this time, the pipeline has been shut down and contained. >> reporter: this oil-soaked pelican, the very first rescued bird getting scrubbed down. they're actually using something as simple as dawn to clean the bird. it will take upwards of an hour. veterinarians saying the oil from this spill, used for asphalt, making this situation far worse. it seems like a very heavy oil. >> it's a thick, tarry oil. it's hard to get off. the washes are taking a long time. >> reporter: this sea lion caught in the spill now getting a scrubbing, but with a toothbrush. now, a setback for cleanup efforts in the ocean. four-foot waves forcing oil-skimming boats to leave the area.

here's kendis gibson. >> reporter: tonight, the fbi investigating a frightening possibility. a hacker attack on more than a dozen flights across the country. the troubling claims outlined in a newly released fbi affidavit, claiming denver computer security experts chris roberts told investigators he not only infiltrated in-flight entertainment system on planes 15 to 20 times but at one point he caused one of the airplane engines to climb, resulting in a lateral orside sideways movement of the plane. airplane engines causing it to climb. resulting in a lateral or sideways movement of the plane. the affidavit saying roberts told investigators as a passenger, he broke into the plane's inflight entertainment systems through boxes under seats. >> it's something that's a possibility. it's something the government has said is a problem. >> reporter: in february and last month, roberts, traveling on united from denver, tweeting about the airplanes system that caused the fbi to be alarmed. after landing in syracuse, fbi agents immediately meeting him at the airport. seizing more than
