and how our city lives. when mayor murray took office last year, there was a lot that was very wonderful about the opportunities present in our city but also significant challenges. one of those challenges that the mayor identified very early on was the issue of income inequality. when you break down income inequality, down to its foundation, he really is about what we as a city are doing to address the issue of institutional racism in city government and in our civic life. for the mayor, he identified the opportunities that we as a city were creating for young people as a focal point for how he wanted to address income inequality. not just for today, but future generations. so our vision statement as part of the effort is simply that all seattle youth are achieving their full potential with the support of family and a united violence free community. i will just say a little bit about some of the values that drive the vision statement. since 2001, the city of seattle has instituted what was then an innovativ

holding our city back. all of this just like mayor hodges said, unmet potential. you look at these statistics and they are shameful. you talk about racial disparities and oakland, 77% of our caucasian third-graders read at grade level. only 27% of our african-american students read at grade level at third grade. 23% of our latino students. that is shameful in a city that prides itself on progressive values, diversity, and inclusion. but i think as a mayor, the statistics are daunting, but it is the personal, visceral experience that you have. it's the morning when you hug your own eight-year-old and then get the call about an eight-year-old that was shot. and it's having to go to that neighborhood and try and help a community, not just a family but a whole community make sense of something so senseless. and that this child, and i'm, you know, recalling obviously a very specific example. an eight-year-old girl named alasha carridine who was murdered on purpose as a retaliation for a gang-related murder her f

and businesses, than our water sewer systems, all of this works to make our city success flt. i understood that through the many goals i had that have been able to play insuch, but i know full well that if you got a good infrastructure and have parks that center och that you will take care of a lot of families and with our parks it isn't just the physical aspeblths. as challenge as it may be, it is how you program and engage the parents and families and school districts and neighbors into making sure those park represents activities that could also take care of a lot of health challenges as well as be link tooz education, links to support sw after school programs, links to senior programs that are upmost necessity for a growing city. it is also critical to our young people. today san francisco boasts over 220 parks. we have 180 playgrounds. 6 golf courses. i played all 6 of them 3 times. 38 community gardens and growing. i think not unlike all the other cities, our urban parks and urban gardens are growing at a rapid pace. people want to be able to grow their own food and flow

city and we want to protect our students. so, what we brainstormed is the idea of preventing unnecessary injuries and the majority of pedestrian injuries can be prevented by demonstrating safe travel behavior, looking both way, knowing the roadside safeties and the challenge is ensuring that effectively we communicate with all these preventative measures to all students so they're aware of roadside and traffic risks the more they know, the better off so we can equip them with this kind of communication, so having vision zero in mind in the backdrop, we posed the hypothetical question how do we focus on moving forward and develop a strategy that will reduce injuries and fatalities among children in our city and that's the hypothesis we embedded this program and how we wanted to kick it off. i'll continue -- i don't want to hog the mic., guys. so, when we decided to kick off the program, we conducted some research, some development and we considered many options factors to put in place and we wanted a school based program that

our city population roughly about 15% of our city population consists of asian-american specific islanders. roughly historically we've had 8% to 9% african-american. latino population a bit smaller at 5% and native americans historically have been the urban indian population has been about 2%. that diversity belies a lot of tensions that our city is experiencing, like so many other cities across the nation, as we deal with development and growth. we have parts of our city that arediverse. a few years ago after the 2010 census one of our zip codes, 99118 zip code, was declared as one of the most diverse zip codes in the country. other zip codes have since sort of fought for that distinction and yet seattle is known as a city because roughly 70% of the city is white, as also very segregated in how our city lives, and when mayor murray took office last year there was a lot that was very wonderful about the opportunities that were present in our city, but there were also significant challenges, and one of those challenges that the mayor identified fairly early on was the issue of income inequa
