to new york city, derailing in port richmond. we have nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal live at frankford's campus where i understand you talked the a doctor there? >> just finished chatting with a doctor who is working inside. and he gave me an update on the situation inside the hospital. he tells me, and this information very preliminary right now. he tells me about 25 patients are currently inside frankford hospital. this is about a ten-minute ambulance ride from the location of the crash. and he is telling me that most of these patients were in the first three cars of this train that derailed, and those are the cars you can see in the video, or pretty severely damaged. he told me one story of a conductor, an amtrak employee who was on the train taken to the hospital. the conductor said he was sitting there. everything seemed to be going fine, and he suddenly heard a screech and blacked out, woke up with dirt in his face. he was rushed to the hospital. one of about 25 patients here at frankford health. doctors tell me that the injurie

this is port richmond. you can see the wreckage from last night's accident. first responders have been working by spotlight and flashlights to pull victims from the scene. they brought in more portable generators and lights. five people are dead, six in critical condition. dozens of other passengers are hurt. the mayor and governor ordered help from police fire and septa says there will be no service between philadelphia and new york. this happened around 9:00 last night. this happened between frankford and wheatsheaf. it was bound for new york city where it derailed near the curve in the tracks. we're right on the other side of where that curve was. in the richmond district we lost 2 washington high school community members to suicide in april. i have known of different incident on the school board for 8 years, but they were usually concentrated at some of the other high schools so to have 2 in one month is a serious concern. out of respect for the privacy of infamlies i won't devulg details until they are public for the families, but did say it is a serious concern. for student the need for wellness is critical especially at high school. as a father of the high school student i know the stresses at high school or college prep can put on young people and without the community based services it makes it challenging especially for working class and immigrant families. i know one of the suicide victims was a asian marijuana and the other was a 18 year old that transferred out of washington high school. i know washington has a great wellness center that does peer to peer mental health counseling that is a model of how to build support from school and i think richmond area for helping develop that model. i know the school distric

this is a live picture of what's happening on the ground there in port richmond. as david is telling us they have set up a very large scene where they are tending to people who need treatment and varying degrees of severity. some people had to go to the hospital by ambulance, others were able to walk get on septa buses and be taken to the hospital. matt rivers has been talking to some of those people and hearing their harrowing stories. he's told us people from the neighborhood are bringing water and that sort of thing and so you can see the sense of community on what is an incredibly tragic night in port richmond. this was a train that was supposed to go into new york's penn station rues what is typically a very easy ride. it was in the darkness that the jarring impact happened and that must have been a of course very scary very sudden for so many people. david was saying, too that a lot of these people that were getting off the train did seem to be a bit panicked. once they saw those first responder there is that helped them to calm down just a little bit and of

after the war in 1905 president teddy roosevelt came to visit our museum in richmond. when he was there, he noted the pride that the women had in their collection. he went back to washington and made it possible so that the war department could return these flags back to the states from which they originally came. so if it was identified as a texas flag it was given back to texas. the virginia flags, when it came to virginia in the -- to the government, was given to the confederate museum as we were called then. there was not a historical ♪ virginia or a library of virginia that existed at that time, so they were returned to us. after the war department had gone through its process and had disbursepersed all of the flags it could identify. it had over 200 left. it turned those over to the confederate museum for its safekeeping. that's how our collection came to be that large. this particular case talks about primarily over the overland campaign and shows things. this is when lee and grant began to fees each other in 1864. you will notice that there are photographs of

after he left appomattox in 65, he returned to richmond with his wife. they moved to lexington, where he was president of washington college for the next five years. he passed away in 1870, 5 years after his surrender. this is one of the death masks. the image behind him is an image of appomattox courthouse. you can see the ruins of the burned out courthouse, taken after 1892, when it burned. this had been the county seat up until that point. as we showed you on the map of death before, this was built on the stagecoach line. the railroad line did not come through the village. it was a few miles away, where lee was trying to get to. when the courthouse burned, they build a new courthouse and move the county seat to where it exists today, near the railroad station in the town of appomattox. this gallery focuses on the confederate veterans. many of them were wounded during the war and lost limbs. some of them had prosthetic limbs, like this, made. when this was given to us, the gentleman said he did not wear it very often. his grandkids probably played with

nbc 10's deanna durante is joining us now live from port richmond richmond. >> reporter: yeah, the board person from the ntsb is still giving that press briefing. at this foibtpoint, they have been habl to look at surveillance video, a forward-facing camera that shows what the front of the train shows, the train tracks the illumination and speeds of the train. we learned in the minutes before the crash that the train was going faster. 16 seconds before that camera went dark the speeds were reported at 100 miles an hour. they also say that that video shows when those brakes were applied. take a listen to what we just heard. >> mere seconds into the turn we could see the train tilting approximately ten degrees to the right and then the recording went blank. >> reporter: now we can also tell you that the ntsb says it's been continuing to do inspections, also look at logs. see if there are any problems with that train. they say they looked at the inspection logs as the train left 30th street and there was nothing out of the ordinary. also said it tested most of the train signals along this l

fox 29's chris o'connell is live in port richmond tonight. chris, what kind of difference would these safeguards have made here? >> reporter: iain, ntsb plainly says this derailment could have been prevented with technology that amtrak already uses. unfortunately, it was not using that kind of technology in this case. it is called positive control. that is where the speeds of trains are literally brought back to the speed of the posted speed limits on these rails. once again unfortunately, it was not being used in this case. it is technology that is being used around the country. now, just a little while ago i just stepped off the helicopter on skyfox to see the investigation first hand, to see what is going on from above. ntsb investigation will be broken up no 22 faces. the on scene investigation where they'll be collecting data and evidence documenting the scene and offering families assistance assistance. they will then take that data back to washington to analyze that. that is report will come a full report on this derailment months late

live from port richmond. monique braxton, "nbc10 news." >>> we're also taking a closer look at the type of engine involved in tuesday night's derailment. is this engine 601 in one of its prior runs. one of amtrak's seimans. it has a sprinter max speed of 125 miles per hour. it is equipped with audio and video recording system. engine 601 is fairly knew put into service february of the last year. the ntsb said the derailment could have been prohibited by a sophisticated set of sensors on the rails with something called positive train control or ptc. if the crew doesn't slow down the train, the computer will activate the brake. >> this is exactly the type of incident that ptc is designed to prevent. so we have seen this before and we will continue to see it again, until ptc is installed. >> here's the thing, all u.s. railroads are required to install ptc by the end of this year. however, some lawmakers say that deadline will not be met and should actually be extended until 2020. some sections of the track have
