we're joined live from wimberley, a town between san antonio and austin. 1 6 people dead. if i word on the victims and those being looked for right now? reporter: right now a lot of the focus is on the search and the rescue mission for people still missing. 13 in this county here in hays county and three missing in houston. they are still calling it a search and rescue. not a recovery. they are still hoping, you know, as time goes on sadly against hope that they will find some of the people. there are debris piles they have not been able to clear yet. also, there are just areas they haven't been able to get to because of the damming done to the roads and the water on the roads. so they are hoping that the people are hunkered down somewhere and they just have not been able to get to. they said debris clearing is going to start soon. that effort the recovery effort could take weeks. they are expecting more bad weather. there could be more rain later this week. thunderstorms and even hailstorms could complicate the recovery efforts which is one of the reasons why it may take

houston has been hard hit, as well as austin and san antonio. this has affected as far north as oklahoma and even new mexico where a tornado hit. in houston, more than 11 inches of rain fell, much of it in six hours, leading to massive flooding and at least five deaths. more than a dozen people have died in texas and oklahoma, including alyssa ramirez, a homecoming queen killed on the way home from prom. floodwaters swept her car away. >> she called 911. it was just too much. tom: there are also people still missing. a cabin that a mother and two kids were staying in was split in half and swept down the river. that happened in waverly southwest of austin, which is seen some of the worst flooding in the state. >> i think we got a 33.5 foot storm surge coming through, the highest on record. tom: members of the national guard are on the ground, going through the damage, which is extensive. the national weather service says the storms were historic, not because of how large they were but also because of the intensity over the time. it was not just t

another area is hays county between san antonio and austin. the rushing river of san marcos floodeded streets. 2 to 4 feet of water. crews resulted in using a bulldozer there to rescue people from the rising water. >> also in hays county the threat came from the blanco river. the record rainfall drove that river from its unusual depth to 48 feet. that's 28 feet above flood stage. the raging waters knocked down trees and washed away 400 homes. >> many of those homes were in the hays county town of wimberley. the river tore through that community, ripping bridges off their piers, uprooting trees. smashing cars wreging cars destroying dozens of riverside home by simply lifting them off their supports off the foundation and sweeping them away in the river. officials say at least three people were killed in hays county 13 are still missing. >> among the missing, 11 who were enjoying the holiday weekend in wimberley. the river tore the cabin from its foundation. the cabin floated down the river and hit a bridge. that's when one of the victims laura

. >> so this is ken bell, the city manager of san marcos, texas, about 50 miles northeast of san antonio giving an update as to the missing. and actually, the number has changed. before air, it was 12 people missing and he now has confirmed that at least in the san antonio, san marcos area, now 11 people missing. but the statistics have been really nothing short of remarkable. the pictures even more so. take a look at your screen, this is wimberley, texas. we talked about the death toll from these storms at 18 in the united states, in texas and oklahoma. 31 in texas, oklahoma and mexico all told. look at the power of the water, literally decapitating that bridge and sending it flying, the massive structure and everything in its wake. in houston, more than a thousand properties damaged or destroyed. five people dead in houston alone, two people missing there, two to four inches of rain hitting there in various parts of the area between wednesday and sunday. it's still an emergency and there is still a rescue and still a recovery. i want to take you straight to some of the hardest hit part

in between san antonio and austin is san marcos. this is an area where, again, as e was mentioning more rainfall is moving in. you have to understand. on saturday we had 9, 10, 11 1/2 inches of rain in 24 hours. you have that dramatic increase in the water levels. we're going to see a couple inches. yes, the ground is saturated, but we're not expecting to see those rivers at those historic heights. we do however, have some tornado warnings. this one in effect for about 155,000 people. that includes cities in cedar park georgetown and counties such as burnett, travis and williamson. we had a visual sighting by law enforcement of a large tornado on the ground. since then that's able to dissipate. we have other ones being spotted as well. in fact just to the north of this and if you take a look at adamsville here again, we had a visual sighting by law enforcement of another large tornado. so our threat is not just the rainfall which is going to occur, and there will be some flash flooding but now we're looking at the possible, you know
