i'm stephanie sy. shia fetterers assembling near ramadi. they're prepared to launch a huge new offensive to take the city from isil. ramadi is west of baghdad and isil controls much of the city looking anbar province the u.s. is pledging to do all it can to help. >> god willing we will achieve victory soon, and we will never accept rather than triumph. it will be a real backbone for security forces. we will support the legitimacy in iraq, represent government and parliament. >> the iranian backed groups have fought isil back from iraq. we have more from baghdad. >> isil is in control of ramadi city after a three-day complex and sophisticated assault. they managed to push government forces out of the provincial capital of anbar. they asked the help of shia led militias to recapture the city. what we understand is that these militias the different brigades are now preparing gearing up for a counter offensive against isil. this is a very controversial decision and many influential tribal leaders have been warning against this, saying it will b

stephanie sy is there. >> reporter: they approached the port in silence. silhouettes in the dark sky. boat has just docked and it's quite a powerful moment as the migrants stand silently as the boat has just some to shore. many with difficult stories to tell. they've risked a lot to get here. many won't know where they go when they get here, but this will be one of the first times they've felt safe in a very long time. almost 900 people were on board after being rescued on saturday. they dock in sicily in the morning hours of monday morning. >> they never stopped. we talked about the emergency because there is not really a sudden emergency but we know there is a continue peaking again and again. >> it took hours for the migrants to disembark. the emergency case is first but it's thorough one by one medical screening process of so many meant that it was slow going. they're exhausted looking faces a hint of what they had been through they were not allowed to talk to any of them. they will decide where they'll go next. but not all will want to stay and travel

i'm stephanie sy. a state of emergency is in effect along parts of the southern california coastline right now. crews are combing beaches and scooping up crude after a major oil spill as much as 105,000 gallons of oil leaked out of a pipeline. 6,000 gallons have been removed, but beaches have been shut down as investigators assess the impact. >> reporter: officials estimate after the online pipeline ruptured, over 100,000 gallons of oil leaked out, and 21,000 gallons reached the pacific ocean. cleanup is already underway. with environmental workers struggling to contain the mess as ships try to corral the two slicks. it's unclear how long the cleanup will take or how much it will cost. >> we have our response crews out combing the beaches, looking for affected wildlife. >> reporter: the california department of fish and wildlife does not have a count of how many have been effected. the department suspended fishing and shell fishing along the coastline and is also trying to protect the nesting sites of

i'm stephanie sy. the u.s. military has confirmed a marine helicopter has been found in eastern nepal and there are likely no survivors. the wreckage was located in jungle and rugged terrain. the effort to recover the remains has been called off due to bad weather. there were eight people on board including six americans and two nepalese. a crew will return tomorrow. >> due to the extremely difficult terrain, below freezing temperatures, and violent winds and thunderstorms, i made the decision to cease the recovery efforts for this evening. we cannot afford to put service members at any further risk. at first light we will resume the recovery mission. we're continue to mourn the loss of the soldiers from nepal and our marines who lost their lives. >> faiz jamil has more. >> reporter: the remains of the u.s. marine helicopter was found about 80 miles outside of the capitol, kathmandu. the helicopter was doing relief operations in that area when it went missing. they found the remains earlier today, and

i'm stephanie sy. nepal is on edge yet again this morning after another large earthquake shook the nation. today's quake measured 7.3 in magnitude. the epicenter was near the chinese border about 50 miles from kathmandu. dozens are reported dead and at least a thousand are injured. it is now well into the evening in kathmandu and people are preparing to sleep out in the open. our correspondent is in kathmandu. >> reporter: a building that survived the earthquake from two weeks ago has come down in a spectacular way. as you can see people over here are trying to clear the mess around here. there are suspicions that a taxi and a motorbike might have been buried under the rubble and it's impossible to tell right now. >> unfortunately the road was open and someone thought that the taxi might have gone through. so that's why we are digging over here. >> reporter: right. >> [ inaudible ] in the road here. >> reporter: yes. >> [ inaudible ] some of the taxi -- >> yeah. >> that's why we have all of the equipme

i'm stephanie sy. federal investigators this morning are trying to learn why an amtrak train was going twice the speed element when it derailed. the attention is now focused on the engineer who was in control. seven people were killed hundreds more treated for injuries. duarte geraldino is live in philadelphia. good morning what do we know first of all about the condition of those that are still being treated at hospitals? >> reporter: it's important to note their ages they range from 19 to 80 years old. there are about eight people in critical conditions stephanie, and their injuries fall in to several brood categories. rib cage injuries, lung punctures and a lot of fractured bones right now. most injured were in the first two cars and you can see how badly damaged those cars were. despite their injuries doctors are fairly optimistic for survivors. >> i believe strongly that all of the remaining folks will get better and go home. so i don't think there are going to be many lasting significant effects

stephanie sy sat down with them. >> what was your reaction when you heard about the earthquake? >> it was very shocking. obviously, everybody talks about there will be some kind of a terrible earthquake in nepal. many of my friends around the world, they wanted to send army aircraft to evacuate them. especially my nuns. the nuns volunteered to say we are not going to anywhere. we are going to volunteer over here to protect the people, protect the you know, the house and the temple and then the villages. >> so if we look at the immediate needs that we are seeing in nepal, what are those needs that you see? what kind of aid is needed? >> well, my friend who's there they don't have water. she's got 48 kids in her orphanage and they're under a tarp that's protecting them. it rained quite a bit after the earthquake so it's cold. >> she's talking about a social worker in nepal she runs a day care for parents who are in prison. sarandon featured her in a documentary called waiting for mamu. >> the children are very frightened so they don't want to go back in the house. they can't go ba

i'm stephanie sy. commuters are boarding amtrak on a busy route shut down for nearly a week. service was restored between new york and philadelphia. investigators are still trying to pinpoint what led to the derailment that left eight people dead. we have more. inez, good morning. service is back up quicker than expected. >> that's right, and crews worked for the last six days to get the site cleaned up and rail put back together. passengers this morning were able to board trains again following last week's deadly crash. >> amtrak trains between new york and philadelphia are running this morning following a derailment that left eight people dead in more than 200 injured last tuesday. ntsb investigators spent days combing the site of the accident in philadelphia. it is unclear why the train was traveling 96 miles per hour as it approached the curve. federal investigators ordered amtrak to install technology to slow trains the accident occurred. >> we have seen numerous accidents that could have been prevented had it been implemented. >> they are investigating whether a train w

i'm stephanie sy. at least 40 people trying to escape yemen's war were killed in aden today. the sieve yals died when houthi rebel shells hit the boat they were traveling in. 30 saudi coalition air strikes hit yemeni border towns on tuesday. and for the first time since the war began, houthis fired into a saudi town. the u.s. is calling on saudis to stop the fighting for humanitarian reasons. washington pledged millions for support. >> the saudis are not against the idea of some kind of lull in the fighting in some areas, but when we look at the situation now and the latest developments when -- as the houthis, according to reports, have been able to strike inside saudi arabia and inflict damage in civilian areas for the first time it is unlikely that the saudis will accept to stop the air strikes across yemen. they may accept to do that in some parts. they have been talking recently about safe zones inside comblenl where the humanitarian relief can be are brought, but it is a problem, because they have to put troops on the ground to protect those distribution points. they hav
