. 97% of the african-americans were living in that section of wichita. we are talking a 500 foot high fire ball engulfing the block. 14 homes destroyed, fire is everywhere, destruction is everywhere, and 30 lives are lost through the tragedy. i have not found anything saying this is why the story didn't get the attention it needed. but there was a lot going on in 1965 america specifically three wars. the war on vietnam, a massive amounts of troops are headed into vietnam under johnson. we had the war on poverty and the war for equality. and all of that is consumeing the decade. these were turbulant times. everything in selma. and because of that i think this crash in and of itself didn't get the attention it needed because it happened in quote unquote small town usa, wichita kansas. i arrived at the air force base in 2003 never been to kansas and had no idea about the history. you can imagine me sitting there in this city taking in my surrounding and listening to the instructors there. they have a first term airman center and during this time you learn a

two lakes fed by the wichita river and the trinity river runs on to ft. worth, has not seen that much water in a long time, and way out-of-bounds along the highway, and you can see in the pictures i took, it got crazy there for a few days. water across the roads in several places, a lot of detours going around, so it has been kind of crazy, but i am not complaining. i am a farmer, so i will take it. >> you have been seeing a lot of evacuations where you are? >> they have evacuated people in wichita falls, and as far as i know that's the only town that has been hit really bad, and they evacuated anybody half a mile from the river evening from what i have heard. >> in past floods in that area, how does this compare? >> i think it was '07 or '08 the last time we had this much rain, we got 20 inches over a period of a month, and i have a good sized lake on my farm, which is about five acres when it's full, and it went over the spillway then, and last summer it was completely dry, and then now i am back at about 80%, and i sent urgent photos as well. with all

wichita falls, texas was hit pretty hard leaving many parts of the city flooded. many roads and parking lots have been closed and numerous cars are submerged. the rain comes after a year long drought. the severe weather is expected to continue through the holiday weekend. wichita falls saw 160 millimeters for the next 24 hours. more flood could happen. other areas like oklahoma you'll see nearly 150 millimeters of rainfall. oklahoma city is on pace to have the wettest month on record. so very very prone to flooding as well as mudslides for many areas of the southern plains. beneficial rain for the western areas of the united states that includes california. 93% of the state is under severe to exceptional drought at this moment so rain is much needed. rainy weather once again in l.a. with a high of 19 degrees. more like winter actually. meanwhile 18 degrees in denver. still a little bit chilly. much chillier than average conditions for oklahoma city. but heat is still taking place over the south, 28 degrees for the high in houston with thunder showers on friday. no

so at the last -- wichita. at the last minute they get ordered to partake in this unique refueling mission. it was called ironically operation lucky number. so they arrived in wichita on a tuesday which was january 12th. and from that time they're not able to take off due to weather. they had terrible weather in kansas at the time. and finally on that friday captain smart, he's the leader, the commander of the crew, he asked for approval to take off on that saturday which was january 16th. and it had never been done before, but they said, look we just want to get back home. they were stationed at clinton sherman air force base in oklahoma, and they said we just want to get back home. go ahead, you have approval to do this mission. and what it was, it was a unique refueling mission. the kc-135 was supposed to go up and hook up with a b-52 bomber, the long range bomber for the air force. and once they hooked up, they were just going to refuel the bomber and head back to clinton sherman air force base in oklahoma.
