we just learned, as john yang indicated might be a possibility just moments ago, that governor cuomo will hold a press conference at 8:30 eastern. i'll be in the anchor chair at that hour. you should come back for that. now let's bring in former fbi profiler, msnbc contributor clint van zandt. clint, have you ever seen a situation quite like this one, the sophistication of the break, the duration that they've been out, and the amount of time that they appear to have sort of kept themselves off the grid? >> well there's a number of things going on here. number one, i think you're right. the sophistication of the break. know that right now as you and i are talking, there are about 130, 135 escapees from federal and state prisons all over the united states that are in a fugitive status. but i think this story is so gripping, number one, because of the background of these two, the terrible crimes they committed, and number two, their ability to cut their way out of what has been to that date an escape-proof prison. so i think all of those facts come crashing together. you and i and i thi

and governor cuomo started off his speech by saying "the nightmare is over." i want to go back to our guests. clint, give me some of your thoughts on the governor's press conference. obviously, he's elated, and he said this could have ended much, much worse. >> well, i think he's absolutely right. and these three weeks, based upon what we know right now, no one else was injured. no one else was killed. i think law enforcement was able to keep the pressure on these individuals. they were able to keep them only 40 miles away from the prison. and even though it was an extremely rough territory, as you know, 200 -- i mean, 6 million acres in that area, they kept the pressure on between the state police and the other areas. they not only kept these individuals confined, but they were able to protect the homes, the property, everything else out there to basically keep these individuals from intruding into a city, taking hostages, stealing vehicles or committing any other type of crime. so i think the governor is right. i mean, this is a feather in the cap for all th

this morning the new york governor andrew cuomo announced a new investigation into the prison escape. tell us more about that. >> reporter: that's right, carol. this was an expected development here. new york governor andrew cuomo ordering the state's office of inspector general basically come into the equation and initiate their own investigation. they will be tasked with taking a hard look at the clinton correctional facility which is where these individuals escaped from ten days ago. this investigation will include bringing in an outside expert somebody that would be able to offer some perspective and a fresh look at the facility's security their infrastructure and policies and procedures. that individual would then provide feedback to see if there are any change that is need to happen at that facility to make sure that this does not happen again and most importantly if any further charges have to be filed against any other individuals. >> i also understand schools are reopening where you are despite this manhunt. are there precautions being taken? >> reporter: yeah. well school is

in the words of governor andrew cuomo, the nightmare is finally over. the second of two killers is under arrest this morning following a three-wheat mack hunte. david sweat was captured two days after his fellow escapee richard matt was shot and killed by the state police. he was shot and this morning is in critical condition in an albany hospital. mark albert good morning. >> reporter: good morning. david sweat, a 35-year-old managed to conceal himself by hiding in dense woods but he was ultimately caught by walking out in the open on a remote mode in the middle of the day. law enforcement officials escorted the ambulance carrying david sweat to albany medical center sunday night where he's listed in critical condition. authorities have placed sweat in a secure section of the hospital as doctors continue to assess his injuries. >> based on the preliminary evaluation of the patient, it's obvious that he would need to be here at least a series of days. >> reporter: hours earlier sergeant jay cook who was on routine patrol alone spotted sweat two miles fr

just happened, just in the last few minutes, the new york state police and new york governor andrew cuomo just gave a public briefing on those prison escapees in upstate new york. the bottom line here is that one of those two escapees was found by police today and then shot and killed by police today. richard matt police say, was armed with a 20-gauge shotgun when they found him, when he was confronted by police in the woods near the town of malone new york. so, richard matt the man on the left here he tonight is dead. david sweat, the man on the right, is still on the loose. police say the search for the second man continues tonight. we'll keep you posted as we learn more on that manhunt tonight. but again, the headline here is that one of the two escaped prisoners from dannemora maximum security prison in upstate new york has not just been found, but tonight is dead at the hands of police after they found him armed with a shotgun, they say. this is after 21 days that these two guys have been on the loose. richard matt's fellow escapee, david sweat, still out there tonight, and the manhu
